Land CSEM impulse responses in simple layered models
We argue that in a half space model with a single layer, the electric field impulse response at different offsets can be understood physically. Diffusive fields travel along paths like wavefields but are not localised in time. Each event that is measured comes from a path with the least attenuation, which corresponds to early arrival. The most prominent TE mode contribution to the detection of a subsurface layer comes from the coupling of the airwave with the subsurface. The most prominent contribution from the TM mode comes from the path through the resistive layer with almost vertical diffusion paths between the surface and the target. The arrival time of the peak of the event from a conductive layer can be understood from this reasoning. The arrival time of the peak of the event from a resistive layer can be understood from this reasoning when the offset is not too large compared with burial depth of the target layer. These predictions lead to estimates of depth to target layer with an error of less than 5% and the resistivity of the resistive layer of less than 50%. The information contained in the impulse responses suggests that inversion would yield good results.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Geophysics and Petrophysic
Environmental application of basic oxygen furnace slag for the removal of heavy metals from leachates
Industrial waste is a major environmental concern nowadays, stimulating the thorough study of the minimization and recycling of solid wastes and of the containment and treatment of liquid contaminants. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, a solid waste from the steel industry, has been found to be effective in the removal of heavy metals. However, this has not been applied so far in low permeability barriers, such as those used as bottom liners in landfills. This work studies the performance of BOF slag in both containment and treatment technologies for toxic leachates. Flow models are developed to assess the transport of metal ions through a permeable reactive barrier and a composite clay barrier. Reactive transport through the slag barrier and adsorption in the clay barrier are coupled for different conditions to find the residence time, the barrier life span and the optimum operative conditions. The results show that the use of BOF slag increases the breakthrough time of the contaminants, enabling improve design of low and high conductivity reactive barriers, and expands the life cycle of the material.Fil: Francisca, Franco Matias. Criticism of the "mental experiment" by David Held
In this short paper we apply ourselves to critically examine the teoretical proposal by David Held about the possibilities of formation of a “cosmopolitan democracy”. To this end, we present the argument structured around three main principles: the principle of autonomy translated as the ability to participate in public debates, the principle of the creation of a democratic legal state and the principle of a cosmopolitan democracy resulting from the above. Then, give way to criticism of the “mental experiment” suggested by the author as an exercise by which you can explore the potentiality of autonomy in structuring contemporary societies.Fil: Cristobo, Matias. Identification and characterization of a novel monooxygenase from Burkholderia xenovorans LB400
Whole genome sequences have been key elements in discovering new genes and in predicting protein function. A gene found in Burkholderia xenovorans LB400 encodes a protein that is 77% identical and 85% similar to the p-cymene monooxygenase from Pseudomonas putida F1. Phylogenetic analysis of this enzyme reveals that it is closely related to cymene, xylene and alkane monooxygenase. Protein alignment of these sequences identified 10 conserved histidine residues, of which 8 were reported to be essential for catalysis in alkane monooxygenase. The identified consensus sequence for these enzymes is [HX(3)HX(25)HX(3)HHX(139)HX(2)HH], which is characteristic of membrane-bound hydroxylases with an active site that require iron and the activation of molecular oxygen for their catalytic cycle. In order to analyze the B. xenovorans LB400 monooxygenase enzyme in more detail, we cloned the cognate genes into the expression vector pQE.30 and performed biotransformation assays to determine the substrate specificity of the CymA1A2-like enzyme. The novel monooxygenase found in LB400 hydroxylates p-cymene to the product p-cymen-8-ol. The cymene monooxygenase found in P. putida F1 hydroxylated the methyl group of p-cymene, while the novel monooxygenase catalyzed the hydroxylation of the carbon of the isopropyl group adjacent to the benzene ring. The enzyme also oxidized the substrates cumene, isobutylbenzene, n-butylbenzene, propylbenzene, 1, 4-diisopropylbenzene, tert-butyltoluene, sec-butylbenzene, and 4-ethyltolunene in addition to p-cymene. The collected data indicate that the LB400 monooxygenase described above is able to catalyze an interesting and novel reaction, but its physiological role is still unidentified. Steric hindrance and chain length definitely play an important role in determining the enzyme specificity. Metabolite analysis and RT-PCR data indicated that there is no correlation between the novel enzyme activity and growth of the strain on p-cymene, propylbenzene, 1,4-diisopropylbenzene, 4-ethyltoluene, n-butylbenzene, isobutylbenzene, sec-butylbenzene, tert-butylbenzene, and tert-butyltoluene. Other pathways and enzymes are involved in the degradation of these substrates. This data indicates that although bioinformatic analysis is a valuable tool in protein analysis and function prediction, it cannot always accurately predict the catalytic activity and physiological role of an enzyme.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 120-127)
On the modulation of low-order roughnesses on the flow over low-order topographies
The impact of low-order roughness on low-order topographies was experimentally explored using high-resolution particle image velocimetry in a refractive-index-matching channel at Reynolds numbers Re = 40,000, based on the channel half height and the bulk velocity. The topographies consisted on 2D and 3D sinusoidal waves, which spanned most of the test section. The roughnesses also consisted on the same waveforms but one order of magnitude smaller than the topographies. We focused on 2D-2D and 3D-3D roughness-topography configurations. The flow statistics are compared with hydrodynamically smooth wavy topographies to get insight on the effects of the 2D and 3D roughnesses. Inspection of the flow statistics reveal that the low-order roughness induced changes in the velocity fluctuations near the wall; mean flow was not substantially modified. In particular, the Reynolds stress decomposition via quadrant analysis revealed that the 2D roughness reduced the sweeps and ejections in the 2D topography; however, negligible changes occurred in the 3D case. Inspection of the flow fluctuations with Proper orthogonal decomposition at various spatial regions revealed that the 3D roughness increased the complexity of the flow, attributed possibly to the generation of small-scale motions located within the troughs.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2021-05-01The student, Matias Colombo Baeza, accepted the attached license on 2019-04-24 at 12:20.The student, Matias Colombo Baeza, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-04-24 at 12:28.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-04-25 at 12:11.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #13877 on 2019-08-22 at 16:23:50Made available in DSpace on 2019-08-23T20:48:25Z (GMT). Performance Evaluation of Approximate Priority Queues
We report on implementation and a modest experimental evaluation of a recently introduced priority-queue data structure. The new data structure is designed to take advantage of fast operations on machine words and, as appropriate, reduced key-universe size and/or tolerance of approximate answers to queries. In addition to standard priority-queue operations, the data structure also supports successor and predecessor queries. Our results suggest that the data structure is practical and can be faster than traditional priority queues when holding a large number of keys, and that tolerance for approximate answers can lead to significant increases in speed.
