Training teachers to design game-based learning activities: evidence from a pilot project

    No full text
Game-based learning (GBL) provides direct experience, reflection, and self-assessment opportunities. To support their knowledge and expertise on GBL, a group of Italian teachers volunteered in a four-month, free-access online training on GBL characteristics and GBL design to take games in school during the pandemic. Before the training, teachers had very high and generalized trust in relation to the potential of GBL, despite limited exposure. After the training, teachers developed more insightful opinions and expectations, strengthening their positive feeling of GBL. The study also analyzed teachers’ methodological choices and skills in implementing GBL activities in blended and digital learning environments. Teachers used games for different goals to promote student engagement and academic continuity in times of crisis, but also as a flexible and effective environment to promote active learning strategies in both face to face and distance education

Assessment literacy is a strategic competence to manage the complexity of modern society. The decision-making process should be based on valid data and elements in order to lead to a good decision. The choice of upper secondary school is an example of a complex choice. This task is demanding and often can bring on feelings of anxiety and stress to students and parents; this choice can in fact impact on the academic success of students. At the same time, this process involves many people: students with their wishes and aspirations; parents with their expectations; teachers with their opinions formalized into the school guidance. In this frame, we manage a survey to highlight the decision-making process related to upper secondary education choice from the parents’ perspective.

Playing videogames can positively affect health and well-being in older adults, alleviating the loss of cognitive functions and promoting a better lifestyle. The videogame industry recently started to produce games and apps specifically aimed at promoting physical and cognitive training (exergames and “brain trainers”). Using these tools both for personal use and in therapeutic contexts is a promising approach; however, it depends on characteristics such as quality of design, accessibility, inclusivity, monetization strategies of individual apps, as well as motivation to play. From the analysis of some of the most popular brain training apps currently available in the mobile game market, this article reflects on the accessibility properties that can promote the adoption and effectiveness of brain training apps to promote wellbeing and healthy ageing

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
