Differential stability of 2'F-ANA*RNA and ANA*RNA hybrid duplexes: roles of structure, pseudohydrogen bonding, hydration, ion uptake and flexibility
14 pags., 7 figs., 3 tabs.Hybrids of RNA with arabinonucleic acids 2′F-ANA and ANA have very similar structures but strikingly different thermal stabilities. We now present a thorough study combining NMR and other biophysical methods together with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations on a fully modified 10-mer hybrid duplex. Comparison between the solution structure of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA hybrids indicates that the increased binding affinity of 2′F-ANA is related to several subtle differences, most importantly a favorable pseudohydrogen bond (2′F-purine H8) which contrasts with unfavorable 2′-OH-nucleobase steric interactions in the case of ANA. While both 2′F-ANA and ANA strands maintained conformations in the southern/eastern sugar pucker range, the 2′F-ANA strand's structure was more compatible with the A-like structure of a hybrid duplex. No dramatic differences are found in terms of relative hydration for the two hybrids, but the ANA•RNA duplex showed lower uptake of counterions than its 2′F-ANA•RNA counterpart. Finally, while the two hybrid duplexes are of similar rigidities, 2′F-ANA single strands may be more suitably preorganized for duplex formation. Thus the dramatically increased stability of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA duplexes is caused by differencesin at least four areas, of which structure and pseudohydrogen bonding are the most important. © The Author(s) 2010. David B. Brownlee interviewed by Ana Tostões
In February 2018, Ana Tostões interviewed David Brownlee, pioneer researcher on Louis I. Kahn and an historian of modern architecture and professor of the history of art at the University of Pennsylvania, in order to debate Kahn’s realm of ideas and their contemporary significance. David Brownlee was guest curator of the exhibition Louis I. Kahn: In the Realm of Architecture (Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1992), and is co-author of the homonymous book (with David G. De Long, New York, 1991, translated into four other languages) that stands as the first worldwide comprehensive publication on Louis I. Kahn
Critical Influence of Nanofaceting on the Preparation and Performance of Supported Gold Catalysts
A partial transformation of the {100} surfaces of ceria nanocubes into a set of nanometer-heighted, {111}- bounded, peaks was achieved by an oxidation treatment at 600°C. This particular type of surface nanostructuration allows the preparation of CeO2 nanoparticles in which {111} nanofacets contribute significantly to their surface crystallography. This transformation of the surface structure plays a key influence on the behavior of ceria as a support of gold catalysts. Thus, the appearance of well-developed {111}-nanofacets leads to a much higher efficiency in the usage of this noble metal in the synthesis of catalysts when prepared by the deposition-precipitation method. Moreover, gold catalysts supported on the surfacereconstructed oxide present an intrinsic (per gold surface atom) CO oxidation activity much higher than that of catalysts prepared on the nontreated oxide.Fil: Tinoco, Miguel.
In the whole of Brazilian writer Ana Miranda#s fictional narrative, the travel thematic # considered one of the most fertile themes of the western literature of all times # occupies a central space, and can even been seen as the most important structuring axis of Miranda#s works. The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the treatment given to the travel subject in the novels Desmundo, O retrato do rei, Dias & Dias and Amrik, emphasizing that, through the traveling narrators, Oribela, Mariana, Feliciana and Amina, the author promotes a connection between different cultures, genders, ethnics and generations, at the same time that establishes a profitable dialogue with the past in her invariant problematization concerning the limits and crossings between the fictional and the extra-literary narrative discourses that surrounds it, mainly the historical and the biographic ones
Stages for the More Sustainable Farm
Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones. Analyses of the results allow us to confirm the greatest relative sustainability of the planned farm, for the diverse traced scenarios.Decision taking, planning, sustainability, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management,

Natal’s municipality is considered as entirely urban since 1994’s Master Plan. However,
in its territory, it is possible to identify communities thar practise typical rural
environment activities. It is the case of Sítio Gramoré (or Gramorezinho), Povoado
Gramoré, Sítio Pajuçara and Povoado Caiana, which are located in the surroundings of
Moema Tinoco da Cunha Lima avenue, in Natal’s North Administrative Region. In them,
the vegetable cultivation is observed, especially on the yards of small granges.
Nonetheless, these communities are threatened by the urbanization process, that is
translated especially in the duplication process of Moema Tinoco avenue, which has
caused and still can result the partial expropriation of the sites that practice agriculture
in its surroundings. That said, the thesis aims to answer the following research
question: what are the possibilities of permanence of the agricultural spaces in the
surroundings of Moema Tinoco avenue? The hypothesis assumes that the possibilities
of agricultural continuity on Moema Tinoco’s surroundings depends, in the foreground,
of the vision that the farmers have regarding the space they occupy and, in the
background, of the institutional actions that affect the territory. Therefore, the study
object of this thesis is the relation between the urbanization process and the dimension
of the perceived, conceived and lived space in agricultural areas in the city’s borderline
and is main objective is to highlight continuity possibilities of life and rural production
spaces in a municipality under the urban domain. The thesis is guided by the
regressive-progressive method of Henri Lefebvre (1970) and by the method of the
Inhabitant’s Word, discussed by Henri Raymond (2001) and Nicole Haumont (1996),
which guided the interviews with the farmers of the productive communities around
Moema Tinoco avenue. Besides that, interviews with the agents involved in the space
production of the referred avenue were done, as well as routes oriented by the serial
vision method of Gordon Cullen (1959) and registers on field diary. All work is based
on a theoretical discussion about the countryside- urban relationship, that is based on
authors such as Henri Lefebvre (1968, 1970a, 1970b, 1972), Priscila Bagli (2006), Ângela
Maria Endlich (2006), José Graziano da Silva (1997), Doralice Maia (1999), Maria
Encarnação B. Sposito (2012, 2014), Ana Fani Alessandri Carlos (2004) and Neio
Campos e Mara Krahl (2006). The themes “utopia” and “possibilities” are also discussed
to think about the referred agricultural areas future. As results, it was verified that there
are possibilities of agricultural activities continuity in Natal, but it needs to be
stimulated by the public power.O município de Natal é considerado como completamente urbano desde o Plano
praticam atividades típicas do meio rural.
Diante disso, a tese
2014), Ana Fani Alessandri Carlos (2004) e Neio Campos e Mara Krahl (2006).
Somatostatin-type and allatostatin-C-type neuropeptides are paralogous and have opposing myoregulatory roles in an echinoderm
Somatostatin (SS) and allatostatin-C (ASTC) are inhibitory neuropeptides in chordates and protostomes, respectively, which hitherto were identified as orthologs. However, echinoderms have two SS/ASTC-type neuropeptides (SS1 and SS2), and here, our analysis of sequence data indicates that SS1 is an ortholog of ASTC and SS2 is an ortholog of SS. The occurrence of both SS-type and ASTC-type neuropeptides in echinoderms provides a unique context to compare their physiological roles. Investigation of the expression and actions of the ASTC-type neuropeptide ArSS1 in the starfish Asterias rubens revealed that it causes muscle contraction (myoexcitation), contrasting with myoinhibitory effects of the SS-type neuropeptide ArSS2. Our findings suggest that SS-type and ASTC-type neuropeptides are paralogous and originated by gene duplication in a common ancestor of the Bilateria, with only one type being retained in chordates (SS) and protostomes (ASTC) but with both types being retained in echinoderms. Loss of ASTC-type and SS-type neuropeptides in chordates and protostomes, respectively, may have been due to their functional redundancy as inhibitory regulators of physiological processes. Conversely, the retention of both neuropeptide types in echinoderms may be a consequence of the evolution of a myoexcitatory role for ASTC-type neuropeptides mediated by as yet unknown signaling mechanisms.</p
