THEORETICAL APPROACH TO THE INVESTIGATION OF LEXICAL SYNONYMS IN PRACTICE OF TRANSLATION OF L. UKRAINKA’S DRAMA WORK

Аналіз англійських перекладів виявив закономірну відповідність та об’єктивні відмінності між двома мовами на лексико-синонімічному рівні. Рішення проблеми синонімії в теорії перекладознавства неможливе без відповідного розуміння практичного матеріалу, на базі якого можна виробити теоретичні положення про синонімічне співвідношення таких різних мов як англійська та українська.На основі семного аналізу членів синонімічних рядів (контрастивне порівняння даних оригіналу і перекладу) зроблено спробу виявити спільність лексичного значення членів рядів у Л. Українки та в перекладі з урахуванням їх стилістичної значущості і діапазонів вживання, встановити співпадіння або неспівпадіння диференційних відтінків значення, співвідносних на синонімічному рівні в українській та англійській мовах, та визначити ступінь відповідності денотативно-конотативної виразності лексики в оригіналі і перекладі.Аналіз лексичних одиниць, їх розуміння проводиться згідно з функціонально-стилістичними настановами, які відповідають творчій індивідуальності поетеси, її манері письма, оригінальності її мови.Л. Українка яскраво використовує в драматичних творах дериваційні можливості української мови, розширює синонімічні ряди різними зменшувально-пестливими формами, які своїми експресивними тонкощами різняться в ряду по градаційному маркуванню (напр.: матуся, мамочка, ненечка, хатка, хатиночка, хижка, гарненько, доладненько, чепурненько.Ключові слова: мовна характеристика, стилістичне забарвлення, синхронне та діахронне зіставлення, комунікативна образність, семантична функція, контрастивне співставлення.Рассмотрен теоретический подход к воссозданию в переводе лексической си-нонимики драматических произведений Л. Украинки. Анализ английских переводов выявил закономерные соответствия и объективные расхождения между двумя языками на лексико-синонимичном уровне. Решение проблемы синонимики в теории переводоведения было бы немыслимо без соответственного осмысления практического материала, на базе которого можно выработать теоретические положения о синонимическом соотношении таких разных языков как английский и украинский.На основе семного анализа членов синонимических рядов (контрастивное со-поставление данных оригинала и перевода) сделана попытка выявить общность лексического значения членов рядов у Леси Украинки и в переводе с учетом их стилистической значимости и диапазонов потребления, установить совпадение или несовпадение дифференциальных оттенков значения, соотносительных на синонимическом уровне в украинском и английском языках, и определить степень соответствия денотативно-коннотативной образности и эмоционально-экспрессивной выразительности синонимической лексики в оригинале и переводе. Анализ лексических единиц, их осмысление и толкование осуществлены согласно тем функционально-стилистическим установкам, которые соответствуюттворческой индивидуальности поэтессы, ее своеобразной манере письма, неповторимой оригинальности ее языка.Леся Украинка блестяще использует в драматических произведениях и дери-вационные возможности украинского языка, расширяя синонимические ряды различными уменьшительно-ласкательными формами, которые своими дополнительными эмоционально-экспрессивными тонкостями дифференцируются в ряду поnградационной маркированности (напр.: матуся, мамочка, ненечка, хатка, хатинка, хаточка, хижка, гарненько, доладненько, чепурненько).Ключевые слова: речевая характеристика, стилистическая окраска, синхронное и диахронное сопоставление, коммуникативная выразительность, семантическая функция, контрастивное сопоставление.The article investigates the theoretical approach to reproduce synonymic lexemes of L. Ukrainka’s work. The analysis of English translations showed the natural conformity and objective differences between two languages on lexico-synonymic level. The solution of synonymic problem in the theory of translation is impossible without practical material about the conformity of such different languages as English and Ukrainian. On the base of analysis of synonymic members by means of comparison lexical units in original and translation it becomes clear that coincidence of synonymous meanings in two languages are often different. The article considers various styles of translation, their conformity with the individuality of the author, her peculiar manner of writing and her original language. L. Ukrainka brilliantly uses all possibilities of the Ukrainian language in her drama works, but the translators do not always render the emotional nuances and that’s why the English reader does not feel every subtlety of the original text.Presence in original language lexical synonyms demands from the translator special tasks, difficulties of which are explained by composite nature of a word, its many-sided, semantic significance and functional stylistic purpose. Taking into account that during translation semantic factors prevail because first of all the meaning of the word is rendered but not its form. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
