Myths On/Of The Northern Soul Scene

    No full text
A history of the northern soul scene is comprehensively set out in a range of books, films and websites which give a rich picture of the scene’s past. They tell a story of the background to the scene’s formation and its early and later incarnations, all expressed through the strong sense that the scene has survived and flourished, welcomed new members and renewed itself, while always remaining true to its origins and traditions. Many of these mediated histories are stories produced for an insider audience by authors and media producers who themselves have personal experience of the scene. We see this as part of an extensive process of self-documentation which has become a central cultural practice of the northern soul scene. In this chapter, the authors seek to explore how the story of the northern soul scene is told through a range of media and how they relate to processes of scene self-documentation. They tease out the differences between self-documenting media texts and the more mainstream ways in which the scene is represented. And they argue that the myths of northern soul represent a shared narrative; held as a common point of reference, widely distributed and used as a locus for personal identity. Above all, these stories are testaments to an insider identity: a sense of what it is to be a member of the scene and, by contrast, what lies outside. This chapter explores some of the self-documented histories of the scene, drawing out core myths, exploring how they operate over a range of media as a key part in the mythologizing process of self-documentation, and identify the ways in which they act as a stabilising and legitimising force

Kathleen Raine: Relectura creativa de la tradición lírica en lengua inglesa

    No full text
This reading will start from a critical review of some key-concepts of literary theory and the tradition of lyrical poetry. Moreover, it aims at interrogating the lyrical work of the author in order to establish the singularity of her voice, or voices, as regards the lyrical phenomenon, which interacts with kathleen raine's critical and interpretative work on other poets, for example William Blake, Samuel Coleridge, etc. This reading intends to interrogate adopted modulations as distinguishing features of the author so as to clarify the dialectical relation between formal and semantic levels. It is to be expected that this task will facilitate the translation of a textual corpus of raine's poetry, thus enabling a better knowledge of a poet almost unknown in our cultural milieu.Fil: Montezanti, Miguel Angel. Comment on Raine (2019) ‘The neuromoral theory of antisocial, violent, and psychopathic behavior’

    No full text
Raine (2019) reviewed previous research on the neural correlates of antisocial, violent, and psychopathic behavior based on previous studies of neuroscience of morality. The author identified neural circuitries associated with the aforementioned types of antisocial behaviors. However, in the review, Raine acknowledged a limitation in his arguments, the lack of evidence supporting the presence of the neural circuitries. In this correspondence, I intend to show that some of his concerns, particularly those about the insula and cingulate cortex, can be addressed with additional evidence from recent neuroimaging research. In addition, I will propose that the additional evidence can also provide some insights about how to design future neuroimaging studies to examine the functionality of the striatum in the circuitries

Obesity, visceral adipose tissue, and cognition in childhood

There is an increasing prevalence of physical inactivity during childhood, concurrent with a rise in obesity rates, which are associated with a myriad of health complication. In addition to weight status, central adipose tissue is particularly dangerous, with visceral adipose tissue being linked to higher risks of metabolic diseases and cardiovascular complications. However, the relationship between central adiposity and brain health and cognition during childhood, and the influence of a physical activity on these relationships, is unknown. Accordingly, the aim of this investigation was to examine baseline behavioral and neuroelectric differences between healthy weight children and obese children, as well as the effect of a 9-month physical activity intervention on changes in body composition and cognition in preadolescent children. Obese children participating in a randomized controlled trial were matched with healthy weigh children participating in the same intervention. Following a 9-month physical activity intervention, children who participated in the intervention showed improved body composition, whereas those children in the waitlist-control condition, particularly obese children, gained central adipose tissue. Furthermore, obese children in the intervention showed greater changes in a cognitively demanding task, which were further related to changes in visceral adipose tissue. Beneficial changes in body composition were related to an increased capacity to allocate attentional resources and faster cognitive processing, particularly in obese intervention children. These findings highlight the benefits of physical activity, both in terms of body composition and cognitive health, particularly for obese children.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2018-08-01The student, Lauren Raine, accepted the attached license on 2016-07-14 at 22:58.The student, Lauren Raine, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-07-14 at 23:06.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-07-15 at 08:50.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #9954 on 2016-11-10 at 12:20:51Made available in DSpace on 2016-11-10T18:27:53Z (GMT). Bounded game-theoretic semantics for modal mu-calculus

    No full text
We introduce a new game-theoretic semantics (GTS) for the modal mu-calculus. Our socalled bounded GTS replaces parity games with alternative evaluation games where only finite paths arise; infinite paths are not needed even when the considered transition system is infinite. The novel games offer alternative approaches to various constructions in the framework of the mu-calculus. While our main focus is introducing the new GTS, we also consider some applications to demonstrate its uses. For example, we consider a natural model transformation procedure that reduces model checking games to checking a single, fixed formula in the constructed models. We also use the GTS to identify new alternative variants of the mu-calculus, including close variants of the logic with PTime model checking; variants with iteration limited to finite ordinals; and other systems where the semantic or syntactic specification of the mu-calculus has been modified in a natural way suggested by the GTS. Roundness error stacking in assembled spherical roller bearings and its impact on rotor subcritical vibration

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2024 The Author(s)In industrial processes, large rotors are commonly operated below the critical speed, where bearings can be an important source of subcritical vibration. This paper presents a complete study and analysis of the roundness error stacking in rotor-bearing systems. The investigation on how the roundness error of tapered shafts is transferred through the bearing inner ring to the raceways during the assembly process allows to evaluate the final roundness profile of the raceways as the sum of the shaft roundness profile plus the inner ring thickness variation. The method's validity is verified for relative orientations and mounting conditions between the components. A test case is presented in which 3D conical grinding is applied to a shaft tapered bearing installation seats, reducing the roundness error of installed bearings when compared to previous research results. The relevance of the study was proven with rotordynamic measurements, which show that minimized roundness error reduces vibrations.Peer reviewe

Nostalgia, symbolic knowledge and generational conflict

    No full text
Much of what is written about northern soul treats it as a historical subject and phenomenon of the past. This chapter explores how fans have retained a longterm commitment to northern soul by continuing active involvement in the various scenes that exist in the UK. It also considers some of the ways the past and present interrelate and manifest in fans’ lives. Exploring commitment illustrates the meaning and socio-cultural experiences of sustained fandom. This chapter argues that nostalgia, memory and familiarity clearly play a role in northern soul as the acquisition of symbolic knowledge demonstrates an understanding of etiquette, cultural activities, and ultimately cements a fan’s position as a genuine ‘soulie’. This is not to suggest that older fans are ‘clinging onto’ their youth, rather, they look back on their past involvement often with fondness and, in turn, this informs their present involvement. Symbolic knowledge also highlights the male-dominated nature of northern soul. Cultural distinctions alongside concerns with credibility and rarity lead to a sense of solidarity and belonging for fans, which is amplified and extended through long-term involvement. This chapter concludes by exploring generational tension amongst original members of the scene and younger newcomers as issues of ownership and status result in contention between traditionalists and those that feel the scene should progress
