Measurement and Monitoring of Pulmonary Function

    No full text
Several computerized systems that allow the collection of data for measurements of pulmonary function have been developed. Although many of these systems eliminate distorted and incomplete breaths from the analysis, there are still many possibilities for error secondary to the inexperience of the user or to patient-related factors. Training and experience with the use of these instruments is essential to obtain reliable results. A clear understanding of all the principles, the assumptions, and limitations affecting the measurements is also essential. The methodology underlying these systems is reviewed. In addition, the commercially available equipment needs to be standardized from an engineering point of view, to assure that the components used have the proper frequency response, that the signals are collected at proper rates, that calibration is simple and accurate, and that the analysis of the data is correct. Systems should be standardized against a lung model

Nekoliko opaski o pojmu pravne države

    No full text
The author defines the state of law as a typical product of German political culture which corresponds to, but also differs from, both the experience of the English rule of law and that of the French l’ État-Nation. The author pays particular attention to the issue of the legitimacy of the state of law. He focuses on two different approaches to this issue in the works of Volker Gerhardt and Ernst Wolfgang Böckenförd. Following a critical analysis of their fundamental assumptions the author goes on to divulge the thesis on the necessity of a balance between rights and power in the functioning of modern political systems. Dva različita načina razmatranja ovoga pitanja on nalazi u djelima Volkera Gerhardta i Ernsta Wolfganga Böckenförda. Nakon kritičkog razmatranja njihovih osnovnih teza, autor izlaže mišljenje o neophodnosti ravnoteže prava i moći u funkcioniranju modernih političkih poredaka

Grenoble 1 / CNRS, LIPhy UMR 5588, Grenoble, F-38041, France; Department of Information Technology, University of Debrecen, P.O. Box 12, H-4010 Debrecen, HungaryUsing the visible-UV absorption cross section (Abs. XS) of five ozone isotopologues and an averaged actinic flux, we have calculated the contribution of the atmospheric ozone photolysis to the oxygen isotope and ozone isotopologue/isotopomer enrichment. Five ozone isotopologues/isotopomers are considered among which three are symmetric, O163O^{16}3 (noted 666), O16O17O16O^{16}O^{17}O^{16} (676) and O16O18O16O^{16}O^{18}O^{16} (686), and two are asymmetric, O17O216O^{17}O^{16}_2 (667) and O18O216O^{18}O^{16}_2 (668). The photolysis rates of the five ozone isotopologues have been calculated as a function of altitude. The Multi Configuration Time Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method and the potential energy surfaces calculates by R. Schinke and {\it coworkers} have been used. We have used experimental actinic fluxes, averaged for latitude and season, for altitudes varying by step of 4km up to 80km. Below ~35km, the contribution of the Hartley band to the photolysis rates is restricted to its low energy range, named the Huggins band, which has strong isotopologue/isotopomer selectivity and then induces strong enrichment. Consequently, the isotopologue enrichment's due to ozone photolysis are strongly dependent of the altitude, with pronounced enrichment peaks around 35 km, the altitude corresponding to the maximum relative contribution of the Huggins band. \vspace{1em} We will also present some new simulations for the simulation of laser-induced quantum dynamics of the electronic and nuclear motion in the ozone molecule on the attosecond time scale. \vspace{1em

Thermotoga lettingae sp. nov., a novel thermophilic, methanol-degrading bacterium isolated from a thermophilic anaerobic reactor

    No full text
A novel, anaerobic, non-spore-forming, mobile, Gram-negative, thermophilic bacterium, strain TMO(T), was isolated from a thermophilic sulfate-reducing bioreactor operated at 65 degrees C with methanol as the sole substrate. The G C content of the DNA of strain TMO(T) was 39.2 molÐThe optimum pH, NaCl concentration, and temperature for growth were 7.0, 1.0°and 65 degrees C, respectively. Strain TMO(T) was able to degrade methanol to CO(2) and H(2) in syntrophic culture with Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus DeltaH or Thermodesulfovibrio yellowstonii. Thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, Fe(III) and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate were able to serve as electron acceptors during methanol degradation. In the presence of thiosulfate or elemental sulfur, methanol was converted to CO(2) and partly to alanine. In pure culture, strain TMO(T) was also able to ferment methanol to acetate, CO(2) and H(2). However, this degradation occurred slower than in syntrophic cultures or in the presence of electron acceptors. Yeast extract was required for growth. Besides growing on methanol, strain TMO(T) grew by fermentation on a variety of carbohydrates including monomeric and oligomeric sugars, starch and xylan. Acetate, alanine, CO(2), H(2), and traces of ethanol, lactate and alpha-aminobutyrate were produced during glucose fermentation. Comparison of 16S rDNA genes revealed that strain TMO(T) is related to Thermotoga subterranea (98€and Thermotoga elfii (98Ž The type strain is TMO(T) (=DSM 14385(T)=ATCC BAA-301(T)). On the basis of the fact that these organisms differ physiologically from strain TMO(T), it is proposed that strain TMO(T) be classified as a new species, within the genus Thermotoga, as Thermotoga lettingae

This paper brings a master's research performed by the first author who considered her own teaching and learning process as the study object. The objective was to analyze the development of two investigative sequences (IS) in the construction of students' physical knowledge about the phenomenon of the floating of bodies in the water, reflecting on their teaching practice. The research was carried out with her students from the 4th year of elementary education in the school were the teacher works and the process was recorded in video and noted in the teacher's field diary. Two investigative sequences on which the students were led to actively develop concepts related to the studied phenomena through experimentation and collective reflection, were performed. As a result it was evidenced that the participating students were able to exercise reflective thinking, to create and test their hypothesis on problem solving, to broaden everyday concepts about the phenomenon of fluctuation and to develop autonomy related to their own learning process. It was also possible for the teacher to improve her classes through analyzes, mediations and systematized reflections in the investigative process of the practice itself.  Keywords: Learning. Physical knowledge. Investigative Sequences. Blaufuss, F. Halzen, C. Kopper (Changed to add one missing author, no other changes from initial version.)The recent observation by the IceCube neutrino observatory of an astrophysical flux of neutrinos represents the "first light" in the nascent field of neutrino astronomy. The observed diffuse neutrino flux seems to suggest a much larger level of hadronic activity in the non-thermal universe than previously thought and suggests a rich discovery potential for a larger neutrino observatory. This document presents a vision for an substantial expansion of the current IceCube detector, IceCube-Gen2, including the aim of instrumenting a 10km310\,\mathrm{km}^3 volume of clear glacial ice at the South Pole to deliver substantial increases in the astrophysical neutrino sample for all flavors. A detector of this size would have a rich physics program with the goal to resolve the sources of these astrophysical neutrinos, discover GZK neutrinos, and be a leading observatory in future multi-messenger astronomy programs

Sociology and the nation-state : beyond methodological nationalism

    No full text
The equation between society and the nation-state in sociology has been subject to severe criticisms in recent times. This equation has been given the name of ‘methodological nationalism’ and is underpinned by a reading of the history of sociology in which the discipline’s key concept, society, and modernity’s major sociopolitical referent, the nation-state, allegedly converge. At the critical level, my thesis argues that this is too restrictive a view of the history of the discipline and at the positive level it reconstructs the conventional version of sociology’s canon in relation to nation-states. The first part of the thesis surveys the main trends in the current sociological mainstream, reviews the rise of the critique of methodological nationalism and establishes a distinction between a referential and a regulative role of the idea of society in sociology. The body of the thesis constructs a history of the sociology of the nation-state in its classical (K. Marx, M. Weber and E. Durkheim), modernist (T. Parsons and historical sociology) and cosmopolitan (U. Beck and M. Castells) moments. As an essay on the history of sociology, this thesis seeks to uncover how the conceptual ambivalences of sociology reflect the actual ambivalences in the position and legacy of nation-states in modernity
