The purposes of the present study were to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography in the assessment of abdominal organs due to neoplastic process, to determine the ultrasonographic findings of each tumor type found in the liver, intestines and pancreas, and thereby study the potential contribution of ultrasonography to distinguish benign from malignant lesions. One hundred and fourteen dogs with suspected neoplastic disease were enrolled in this prospective study during 12 consecutive months. 88 dogs were diagnosed as having abdominal neoplasm. In 84(95,4%) dogs the affected organ was correctedly identified, in 3(3,5%) dogs the affected organ was incorrectedly identified and in 1 dog the affected organ wasn?t identified. The tumors types in the liver were: cholangiocarcinoma 6(50%), hepatocellular carcinoma 3(25,1%), mesenchymal hepatic tumor ? hemangiosarcoma 1(8,3%), small cell lymphoma 1(8,3%) and bile duct cystadenoma 1(8,3%). Tumor types in the intestines were: adenocarcinoma 2(25%), lymphoma in alimentary tract 2(25%), leiomyosarcoma 2(25%), mesenchymal cell tumor 1 (12,5%) and colon adenoma 1 (12,5%). In the pancreas were: pancreatic adenocarcinoma 3(75%) and insulinoma 1(25%). Considering ultrasonographic findings alone we could predict malignant lesion in 11(100%) cases, and all cases had proven malignant liver neoplasm. However, one case of benign liver neoplasia was erroneuosly consireded as being malignant . Ultrasonographic findings alone were of important diagnostic value in differentiating intestinal neoplasia from enteritis. Eight (100%) dogs showing ultrasonographic signs of malignancy were confirmed as having malignant intestinal neoplasia, however, the same signs were seen in 3 cases of inflamatory granulomatous enteritis. Pancreatic masses were correctedly identified, but it was not possible to confidently differentiate between pancreatitis and pancreatic neoplasia. We conclude that use ultrasonography is of great value in determining the affected abdominal organ for neoplasic process, and that the sonography findings although not specific, may help in the assessment of malignancy

The asinine species was originated thousands of years ago from the same branch of the domestic equine. The asinine have been undergoing to a great adaptation resulting in different characteristics of each population of asinine around the world. In the northeast region of Brazil, they play an essential role in the income of the local families. Due to a large number of locomotor disorders and a lack of professional care, an anatomic and radiographic study of the distal forelimb region of the asinine was carried out in order to gather information to improve the clinical and surgical practice in this species, and to explain the less susceptibility to locomotor disorders compared to equines. The anatomical study showed that asinine have similar muscular characteristics already described for equines. The radiographic exam showed severe lesions, characterized by pedal osteitis, bone reabsorption areas and remodelling of sole margin associated to the distal phalanx rotation. The radiographic study also showed the characterization of the main arterial vessels. No significant correlation was observed between the angle of the hoof wall and the angle of the distal phalanx with the cross section area of the flexor tendons. The larger cross section areas of the superficial digital flexor tendon, deep digital flexor tendon and interosseus tendon were coincidental with the great articular stress, explaining the greater resistance of the asinines to lesions in those structures of their locomotor apparatus

The dogs Golden Retriever with Muscular Dystrophy (GRMD) are considered experimental models for study of the Muscular Dystrophy of Duchenne that acomete human, and they are genetically homologue. We use the muscular ultrasound to evaluate the therapeutical evolution of injection of stem cells (SC). For this experiment we use 8, being 6 affected for disease and 2 not affected (carrying and male normal). We evaluate of qualitative form (visual) and quantitative (digital) the cervical muscles splenius and capitis semispinalis and the pelvic muscle semitendinosus and carry through muscular mensure. In relation to the cervical muscles we verify that it does not have visual alteration in the architecture of fibres, however the treat dog saw arterial presented minors props up in the digital analysis in relation the dog has controlled affected, leaving suspicion on the migration of SC in this muscular group. Splenius presented greater echogenicity that the muscle semispinalis capitis in 7 animals. For the muscle semitendinosus, the carrier presented high echogenicity; the affected ones had presented variable degrees of alteration of the muscular architecture and increase of echogenicity; the normal male presented regular fibres, however in some examinations he presented high echogenicity being able to be consequence of the transducer angle. How much to the mensure, it has difference between the affected ones and not affected for the muscle splenius and due to hypertrophy that affects the pelvic muscles, it was not possible to establish differences between the two groups. We conclude that the ultrasonography with transducers of up to 7,5 MHz is not viable to follow therapeutical evolution of injection of SC in muscles with the pseudohypertrophy of GRMD, had the severe modification of the architecture, not being possible the detention of probable repairs of the muscle

Transabdominal ultrasonography is reported to be an important diagnostic tool used in horses with abdominal pain. Detailed knowledge of the topography of the major areas that provide diagnostic values for each sonographic window with regard to the changes in the gastrointestinal tract should be well established. The aim of this study was to describe the new areas of the abdominal cavity of the horse examined using transabdominal ultrasonography and evaluate the possible ultrasound changes in animals of different sizes, thereby determining the applicability and difficulty in performing this technique. Twenty horses were examined using transabdominal ultrasonography at a convex transducer frequency of 2.5–6.6 MHz at eleven established zones. The horses were divided into two groups based on their size. The potential for identification of the structures in each window was compared; the ultrasound characteristics and wall thickness in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract were described. Abdominal division in specific sonographic zones did not negatively impact the examination time, and the normal standards for the evaluated windows were defined. No sonographic differences were observed in the lumen size and thickness of all parts of the gastrointestinal tract evaluated according to the size of the animal. Abdominal division enables a more precise and standardized topographic evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract, thereby enabling diagnosis of the changes and positioning that originate from different intestinal colic syndrome etiologies. This enables quick and accurate diagnosis

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

A perineal hernia is a surgical lesion frequently observed in surgical clinic for small animals, affecting mainly dogs neutered over five years. Has a high recurrence rate and postoperative complications, and due to this fact, many techniques have been proposed and used for its correction. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the kinetic movement of dogs with bilateral perineal hernia, submitted to the technique of transposition of the semitendinosus muscle before and after its implementation and verify the adaptability of the pelvic limb surgery, after transposition of the semitendinosus 90 days of postoperatively and analyze the feasibility of this technique of repair in cases of bilateral perineal hernia. Eleven dogs were operated with diagnosis of bilateral perineal hernia, on the Surgery Service of the animal small of the Veterinary Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of São Paulo (HOVET-FMVZ / USP). All patients underwent the technique of muscle transposition and evaluated baropodometric examinations before and after surgery, in periods of 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. The variables peak vertical force (PFV) and vertical impulse (VI) were used as parameters for the analysis of changes in locomotion. The PFV and IV showed no statistical difference (p> 0.05) between the operated and non operated limbs, respectively (18.62 &plusmn 4.93 and 18.51 &plusmn 3.75), indicating that there was no change in locomotion dogs after the transposition of the semitendinosus muscle. The difference in behavior of these variables in the preoperative period allowed us to infer that the discomfort caused by perineal hernia can interfere with the locomotion of the asymmetry animal generating, whereas after the operative procedure, the symmetry of locomotion showed more next values of the normal. The difference in PFV and IV, although not significant, gives us an idea of the recovery of these dogs and suggests that the transposition does not affect the motor function of the limb

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
