It was completed in May 1958 and dedicated by the author to his grand-daughter Danielle Marthe CHAUPIN. Anomalous F-electron Hall Effect In The Heavy-fermion System Cetin 5 (t=co, Ir, Or Rh)
The in-plane Hall coefficient RH(T) of CeRhIn5, CeIrIn5, and CeCoIn5, and their respective nonmagnetic lanthanum analogs are reported in fields up to 90 kOe and at temperatures from 2-325 K. RH(T) is negative, field independent, and dominated by skew scattering above ∼50 K in the Ce compounds. RH(H → 0) becomes increasingly negative below 50 K and varies with temperature in a manner that is inconsistent with skew scattering. Field-dependent measurements show that the low-T anomaly is strongly suppressed when the applied field is increased to 90 kOe. Measurements on LaRhIn5, LaIrIn5, and LaCoIn5 indicate that the same anomalous temperature dependence is present in the Hall coefficient of these nonmagnetic analogs, albeit with a reduced amplitude and no field dependence. Hall angle (θH) measurements find that the ratio ρxx/ρxy). = cot(θH) varies as T2 below 20 K for all three Ce-115 compounds. The Hall angles of the La-115 compounds follow this T dependence as well. These data suggest that the electronic-structure contribution dominates the Hall effect in the 115 compounds, with f electron and Kondo interactions acting to magnify the influence of the underlying complex band structure. Magnetic Structure Of Cerhin5 As A Function Of Pressure And Temperature
We report magnetic neutron-diffraction and electrical resistivity studies on single crystals of the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 at pressures up to 2.3 GPa. These experiments show that the staggered moment of Ce and the incommensurate magnetic structure change weakly with applied pressure up to 1.63 GPa, where resistivity, specific heat and nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements confirm the presence of bulk superconductivity. Thermal Expansion And Magnetovolume Effects In The Heavy-fermion System Ce2rhin8
We present the results of thermal expansion α(T), nagnetostriction λ(H,T), and specific-heat Cp(T) measurements made on the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet Ce2RhIn8. The effects of magnetic order are clearly evident as anomalies in α(T) at T N=2.8 K and at Tm = 1.65 K. Cp(T) data indicate that the upper transition corresponds to the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order while the lower transition involves only a subtle rearrangement of the ordered state. Both Cp/T and α/T grow with decreasing temperature below 20 K in a manner consistent with Kondo renormalization. Kondo interactions appear to be responsible for the large electronic Grüneisen parameter which extrapolates to ωe ≈ 48 as T→0, while the characteristic Kondo energy is TK ≈ 10 K as determined from the Cp/T ratio at TN. Above 20 K α(T) is dominated by crystalline-electricfield (CEF) effects. The data are consistent with a CEF level scheme consisting of excited γ 7 (1) and γ6 doublets lying 71±6 K and 195±10 K above a γ7 (2) ground state. In the paramagnetic state (T > TN) the volume magnetostriction follows a simple scaling law, λ∝[H/(T+ Tλ)] 2. The scaling parameter Tλ=5 K is consistent with the Kondo temperature determined from α(T) and Cp(T) data. Analysis of λ(H,T) data also indicates that the magnetic and electronic energy scales associated with the Kondo state in Ce2RhIn8 are equivalent. Milton Ollie Thompson
Milton Ollie Thompson was raised in Indianpolis, Indiana, where he graduated from North Central High School in 1972, Thompson then enrolled at Wittenberg University in Ohio. In addition to being a Dean’s List student at Wittenberg, Thompson excelled at baseball and in 1976 was named a First Team All-American (he was inducted into the Wittenberg Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998). Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, Thompson decided to forgo a professional baseball career and instead enrolled at the Indiana University School of Law in the fall of 1976. He received his J.D. in the spring of 1979.
Thompson has had a wide and varied career. He is the President and CEO of Grand Slam III, LLC – a sports, entertainment, and recreation management-consulting firm, based in Indianapolis. He co-founded Play Ball Indiana – an organization with the mission of creating baseball and softball opportunities for inner-city youth. Thompson has been a certified Contract Advisor for the NFL and NBA Players Association, has served as a Board Member of the Indianapolis Indians baseball team, and is co-founder of the Indiana Amateur Baseball Association. Additionally he has hosted the radio show “Playing for Keeps” as well as the television show “Focus on Indianapolis Sports.” Thompson is a federal court-appointed trustee of the Indianapolis Foundation and served as the Vice President for Corporate Development and General Counsel for the Organizing Committee of the Tenth Annual Pan American Games. This barely scratches the surface of Thompson’s involvement in Indianapolis community and professional activities, many of which have resulted in awards and honors.
Thompson served on the Indiana University Law School’s Alumni Board for many years and he was presented the School’s Distinguished Service Award in 1997. He served on the Board of Visitors from 1994 to 2006 and chaired the group in 1995/96 and 1996/97. In 2007, Milton O.
