No full textTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2014.Esta tese analisa elementos paratextuais em antologias brasileiras de contos de Edgar Allan Poe lançados ou reeditados nos doze primeiros anos do século XXI, verificando de que forma o autor e sua obra são apresentados ao leitor através desses paratextos. Para tanto, analiso quartas capas, orelhas, prefácios, posfácios e notas. O nível de participação do tradutor na utilização desses elementos é também examinado, para que se possa averiguar até que ponto esse intermediador de culturas teve visibilidade nas publicações. A referida análise é norteada, principalmente, pelos fundamentos teóricos de Gérard Genette, sobretudo em seu livro intitulado Paratextos Editoriais (2009), do original Seuils (1987).Abstract : This thesis analyzes paratextual elements in Edgar Allan Poe's Brazilian anthologies of short stories published or reprinted in the first twelve years of the 21st century, observing how the author and his fictional writings are presented to the reader through those paratexts. Thus, I analyze back pages, flaps, forewords, afterwords, and notes. The use the translator made of those elements is examined in order to assess the translator's visibility in the published editions. The referred analysis is grounded mainly on Gérard Genette's theory, especially in his book entitled Editorial Paratexts (2009) from the original Seuils (1987)

Managing inventory and production capacity in start-up firms
No full textSuccessful start-up firms make a valuable contribution to economic growth and development.Models that provide insight into the management of start-up firms are therefore important. We consider the problem of managing inventory and production capacity in a start-up manufacturing firm and argue that for such firms the objective of maximising the probability of the firm surviving is more appropriate than the more common objective of maximising profit. Using Markov decision process models, we characterise and compare the form of optimal policies under the two objectives. This analysis shows the importance of coordination in the management of inventory and production capacity. The analysis also reveals that a start-up firm seeking to maximise its chance of survival will often choose to keep production capacity significantly below the profit maximising level for a considerable time. This insight helps us to explain the seemingly cautious policies adopted by a real start-up manufacturing firm.Keywords: start-up firms; inventory; production ramp-up; stochastic modelling; dynamic programmin
The Gospel of Thomas and the earliest texts of the synoptic gospels
No full textResearch on the Gospel of Thomas in the last quarter of a
century has made it clear that the origins of this apocryphal gospel
cannot
be
satisfactorily explained from a single point of view. The
author thus suggests that Thomas
be
understood as a growing collection
of sayings which originated in various places and languages, with some
logia being added to the collection after its inception. While this
suggestion is by no means new, there have been few extensive attempts
to study Thomas from such a presupposition.
Due to the need for a control group, only the logia which have
rather close parallels to the Synoptic gospels are investigated. Verbal and textual affinities are noted between these logia and the earliest texts of the Gospels (the Coptic versions, the Diatessaron, the
Old Syriac version, and other early versions and Christian writings).
Various degrees of probable contact between each logion and these
texts are assigned.
The results of this study give some idea as to the place of
origin, the original language, and the approximate date at which certain logia were added to the collection. Those sayings which show a
closer affinity to the Diatessaron, the Old Syriac version, or other
Syrian writings may
be
considered as having been added to the sayings
collection as it circulated in its earliest form, possibly in a Semitic language. Other logia which show no signs of awareness of a
Syrian reading, but which are similar to variants found in the Coptic
versions or other Egyptian texts, may well have originated in Egypt
and been added to the collection at a later stage. These results,
however, must await verification by those who might approach Thomas
from related, but different, perspectives

No full textThe article analyzes the impact of the globalization of markets, technologies and companies and of the Europeanization of public policies on state capacities in technology policy. Based on empirical examples from the field of information technology, the article argues that technology policy has been characterized by two contradictory developments in the last two decades. On the one hand, the concepts and strategies guiding public policies have become more and more complex, resulting in comprehensive programs for national and European "innovation policies". On the other hand, as a result of the economic globalization; as well as of changes in the internal structure of the state, the state capacities to implement these ambitious strategies successfully have been eroding. As a consequence, technology policy both on the national and on the supranational level has been confronted with an intensifying strategic dilemma. Finally, the article discusses policy options to cope with this strategic dilemma in innovation policy

No full texttextThis Master’s Report outlines graduate research work completed by Akshay Sriprasad, who is supervised by Professor Tom Edgar, in the area of modeling and systems optimization for the smart grid. The scope this report includes the development and validation of strategies to elicit demand response, defined as reduction of peak demand, at the residential level, in conjunction with collaborative research efforts from the Pecan Street Research Institute, a smart grid research consortium based in Austin, TX. The first project outlined is an artificial neural network-‐based demand forecasting model, initially developed for UT’s campus cooling system and adapted for residential homes. Utilizing this forecasting model, a number of demand response-‐focused optimization studies are carried out, including optimization of community energy storage for peak shifting, and electric vehicle charging optimization to harness inexpensive night-‐time Texas wind energy. Community energy storage and electric vehicles are chosen as ideal dynamic charging media due to increased proliferation and focus of Pecan Street Research Institute on critical emerging technologies. As these two technologies involve significant capital investment, an alternative mobile application-‐based demand response strategy is outlined to complete a comprehensive portfolio of demand response strategies to suit a variety of budgets and capabilities.Chemical Engineerin

A tradução é precedida por um estudo prévio sobre o autor e sobre os aspectos mais importantes de sua obra e por uma apreciação da ficção de Hardy traduzida no Brasil.
