I already have a copy of this book from the Heinrich Ellermann Verlag. That copy has the book's colored illlustration of FG on its cover. This copy from the Büchergilde Gutenberg has instead a green and white OR image on its cover. The last printed page mentions permission from the Ellermann Verlag before a statement otherwise identical. The ISBN number is different. The back cover there repeats the colored picture of FG; the back cover here is green and blue without an image. Otherwise the books seem exactly the same. As I mention there, lively full-page colored pictures and pithy rhymed two-line morals help this book to be a fine little contemporary representative of Aesop. The best pictures are the last four. Are the morals already existing proverbs in German? This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: GermanRudolf Hagelstang
Fine structure of the CCl3 UV absorption spectrum and CCl3 kinetics
The UV gas-phase spectrum of CCl3 was recorded in the range 220-300 nm using pulse radiolysis of CHCl3/SF6 or CCl4/Ar gas mixtures. The UV spectrum exhibits a pronounced vibrational fine structure which is assigned to transition into the (C2A1'(3s)) Rydberg state. The vibronic progression has a band origin around 250 nm and the spacing of 569 +/- 63 cm-1 is ascribed to excitation of the out-of-plane bending mode. The absorption cross section with a maximum of sigma = (1.02 +/- 0.16) x 10(-17) cm2 molecule-1 at 224.80 +/- 0.16 nm was determined relative to sigma(CH3) and sigma(CH3O2). The rate constants for CCl3 + CCl3 + M --> C2Cl6 + M and CCl3 + Cl + M --> CCl4 + M are (5.9 +/- 1.3) x 10(-12) and (6.5 +/- 1.4) x 10(-11) cm3 molecule-1 s-1, respectively, at 298 +/- 2 K and 1 atm total pressure
Iron and the intestinal microbiota in inflammatory bowel diseases
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic, immune-mediated disorders that are the result of inappropriate immune responses towards a subset of resident intestinal microbes in genetically susceptible individuals. Epidemiological studies have correlated dietary factors with increased risk for disease development, exacerbation and relapse in IBD patients. Iron is of particular interest because of the clinical concern of disease exacerbation upon oral iron supplementation in anemic IBD patients. Moreover, iron can selectively modulate the growth, physiology and function of numerous bacterial taxa, although the precise impact on specific resident intestinal bacteria remains largely unexplored. We therefore hypothesized that intestinal iron availability modulates the ecological structure and proinflammatory potential of the intestinal microbiota. To explore this hypothesis, we investigated how iron availability alters the composition of the intestinal microbiota and impacts the physiology and proinflammatory potential of adherent invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC), a distinct pathotype of enteric resident E. coli associated with IBD. In inflammation-resistant wild type mice, decreasing luminal iron concentrations during community assembly resulted in compositional changes consistent with a dysbiotic state, including a bloom in endogenous E. coli. Aggregation of the resident AIEC strain NC101, which is dependent on both cellulose production and iron availability, influenced subsequent interactions with macrophages. When monoassociated in germ free, inflammation-susceptible interleukin-10-deficient (Il10-/-) mice, abrogation of cellulose production in NC101 delayed onset of colitis, suggesting that cellulose may be a novel factor that enhances the proinflammatory potential of AIEC. Consistent with our in vivo observations, NC101 cellulose production corresponded with increased resistance against macrophage phagocytosis and enhanced macrophage proinflammatory responses when bacterial iron availability was restricted. When colonized with a complex microbiota, dietary iron supplementation also limited colitis development in Il10-/- mice. Taken together, these studies suggest that decreasing iron availability enhances the proinflammatory potential of the intestinal microbiota and highlight the complex interplay between host, microbial and environmental factors in the development of IBD.Doctor of Philosoph
In echocardiographic routine-examination some patients, who have had a diphtheria during childhood were noticed to have a biatrial enlargement, without a concurring heart failure. Such pathologic changesas a complication of a diphtheria has not been described before. This study was initiated to determine late cardiac disorders after a diphtheria. Examinations included an ECG, Chest-X-Ray, echocardiography and polymechanocardiography.
In this study 50 patients were included, who had a diphtheria in past. None of the patients had a myocarditis at the same time as acute diphtheria. They were compared to 50 patients, who had not had a diphtheria in history. Chest X-ray showed no significant pathology. In ECG a high incidence of patients ( 20% ) with atrial fibrillation was noticed. In echocardiography the developement of a ventricular diastolic relaxation pattern of the mitral inflow is the main observation. A similar observation is a high A-wave in mechanocardiography.
The diastolic relaxation-pattern is seen in 80% of the patients with a diphtheria in youth. It may be a sequel of a interstitiell myocarditis while acute diphtheria with destruction of single muscle fibres and development of a fibrosis. Over the years chronic pressure may lead to the seen biatrial enlargement Additional factors as increased blood pressure amplifies the effect. The high incidence of patients with atrial fibrillation in the group of patients who had a diphtheria may be explained by the atrial enlargement itself as well as by the mild fibrosis after toxin-induced destruction of single muscle fibres in diphtheric myocarditis
Book Review: Encyclopedia of Political Assassinations
Encyclopedia of Political Assassinations is a work that sets out to document global political assassinations that have occurred during the last century and a half. It is a one-volume encyclopedia with alphabetically arranged entries that are well researched and written with an objective tone. It also features an abbreviation and glossary section, a chronology, and multiple appendices to assist the reader. The author is very thorough, and although many entries are brief, they make good use of the space by covering both the significance of the victim and the outcome for the assassin
Book Review: ’80s Action Movies on the Cheap: 284 Low Budget, High Impact Pictures
’80s Action Movies on the Cheap: 284 Low Budget, High Impact Pictures is a work that sets out to examine the evolution of action movies from their cheesy low-budget origins and how they influenced the development of the action film genre. The author states that his interest in exploring the topic stems from his belief that the 1980s was the birth of the modern-day action film (1). There are 284 entries arranged chronologically that examine the films’ plots and their influencers. The entries have an informal tone, but they are well researched and use examples from other film genres to make connections. The book is intended for use by a variety of researchers, but its tone and content make it most suitable for use as an introduction to 1980s action and adventure films for action movie lovers or film students.</jats:p
Severance Payments for Dismissed Employees Severance Payments for Dismissed Employees in Germany
This contribution investigates severance payments for dismissed employees in Germany. Particularly, it responds to the following questions: Who receives severance payments? By which characteristics is the level of severance payments determined? Is overcompensation to be considered a relevant issue? Hereby, individual and collective dismissals are distinguished. This is the first study on this issue using individual representative data the German Socio-Economic Panel and multivariate methods. The results indicate that rather women, persons with many years of tenure and working in big firms receive severance payments. There is a huge variance in the size of the payments, which can only partly be explained by tenure, the wage and citizenship. About one quarter of dismissed employees is better off in their following careers independent of having received a severance payment.Severance Payments, Dismissals, Plant closings, Dismissal
