The Maulid Mawlid Festival of the Prophet Muhammad is one of the Islamic popular events mostly held in pesantren. It launches almost in every territory of Islamic world, after popularized by abu Abû said Sa‘îd al-kakburi Kakburî (1250-1260). Historically, it was a heritage initially acknowledged by the Dinasty of Fât}}imîyah (909-1171 M). At the beginning, the Dinasty dynasty used the Maulid Mawlîd Festival to gain a fancy of Moslems to support their authority of Islamic leadership. It used to strengthen their political ways to gain many public opinions in relation with their genealogical relationship with the prophet. The affirmation of genealogical relationship was needed as a tool of propaganda politically so that their right to inherit prophet authority has strong legitimation. In addition, the mauled festival does not only function to liven up Moslem community affection toward the prophet but also symbolically function as a psychological antidote to muffle the pain after having war. At the end, Moslem intellectuals started to scrutinize the festival and discuss its essence. However, such festival creates a big debate around Moslem scholars who have pro and contra in seeing it for instance al-Suyût}}î who sees the festival in contradictive way. This paper aims to explore the debates and discourses concerning the Maulid Mawlîd Festival. The discussion over Islamic religious tradition constitutes a strategy to test the level of good argument proposed by each groups of Islamic organization. </p

This article offers a brief account of the political turmoil which led to the abdication of President Abdurrahman Wahid. President Wahid faced serious challenges, particularly from his traditional opponents, the Muslim militants. They made efforts to deligitimize his government using street protests, provocative talk shows and writings which enabled them to create political unrest during Wahid’s short-lived government. The Muslim militants eventually thought that Wahid did not deserve political support from the Muslim community due to his controversial views. The political feud between Wahid and the militants actually is not as simple as it appears. The two belong to different “religious schools of thought”; the former represents contextual ways of thought, and the latter supports textual mindsets. While the first opens a space to dialogue between texts and contexts, the latter follows a one-way path, applying literally what has been stated in the prophetic and scriptural texts

Critics of Orientalism is actually done by Western scholars indicate the passage of the principle of freedom of thought which underlies the research activities of academics in the West. With such academic freedom, the scholars had to deconstruct the Orientalist negative thoughts about Islam, though the thought is already crystallized into a mainstream standard. Institutional development of Islamic studies in the West in recent decades has experienced a change in orientation, to adjust to his position as a medium to establish understanding between program participants across cultural boundaries, traditions, and religion. Nevertheless, suspicion of the activities of Islamic studies in the West is carried out by Muslim students still exists as a precautionary catch against the possibility of erosion of confidence. </p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
