Virtual vs. Standard Strike: An Experiment

In this paper we compare - in the laboratory - stoppage and virtual strike. Our experiment confirms that higher wages offered by an employer lead to considerably more costly effort provision. The number of strikes, the level of efforts and average total payoffs are higher under virtual strike than under standard strike. However, when standard strike is associated with reciprocal externalities, it induces higher effort levels, higher payoffs and an extremely reduced number of strikes than virtual strike. It is unclear whether this behavior re?ects reciprocity or other forms of social preferences. However our results might explain why standard strikes rather than virtual ones are generally adopted by workers.virtual strike, cooperation, reciprocity, fairness, experiments

Influence of Forced Convection on Columnar Microstructure During Directional Solidification of Al-Ni Alloys

    No full text
This paper presents a summary of cellular and dendritic morphologies resulting from the upward directional solidification of Al - Ni alloys in a cylindrical crucible. We analysed the coupling of solid-liquid interface morphology with natural and forced convection. The influence of natural convection was first analyzed as a function of growth parameters (solute concentration, growth rate and thermal gradient). In a second step, the influence of axial vibrations on solidification microstructure was investigated by varying vibration parameters (amplitude and frequency). Experimental results were compared to preliminary numerical simulations and a good agreement is found for natural convection. In this study, the critical role of the mushy zone in the interaction between fluid flow and solidification microstructure is pointed out

Nahuatl in the Huasteca Hidalguense : a case study in the sociology of language

This thesis examines the vitality of Hidalgo Nahuatl (HN) in the communities of Jaltocan, Panacaxtlan, Santa Cruz, Santa Teresa and Zohuala in the Huasteca Hidalguense, Mexico. The research, conducted in Mexico and St. Andrews University from 1976-1982, applies an analysis of HN within the framework of the Sociology of Language and Dependency Theory, thereby using a multi-disciplinary approach. Through an investigation of the historical, social, cultural and economic factors related to HN, the latter is embedded in its reality. HN is shown to be originally a language of dependency and oppression, supported by a long mestizo tradition of "caciquismo". It is demonstrated that an increasing number of Spanish (S) monolinguals, together with other socio-economic factors, is encouraging Nahuas to bilingualize and S:: =A. is fast becoming the new language of dependency. The Hidalgo Nahuas possess practical reasons for the acquisition of S., these being to solve their daily problems - especially land tenancy -, to communicate with the mestizo out-group and to undertake trading with non-HN speakers. However, the Nahuas are not surrendering their native language as they bilingualize, but rather, tend to limit its usage to native Nahua contexts and speakers. HN has become important to the Nahuas in order to demonstrate their ethnic identity and territoriality. The introduction of government projects to the communities, such as the Castellanizacion project or bilingual-bicultural education, are shown to be theoretically bilingual in approach, but fail to take into account sufficiently the regional Indian language in the praxis. The stable maintenance of HN is highlighted by statistical results from the word-count of recorded texts, documents and publications and the range of morphological phenomena affecting S. words in HN is described with examples from the Corpus. The linguistic interference from S. in HN is located within Dependency Theory and this author suggests the use of the term dependency word rather than loan word and dependency language, thus implying a diachronic sociological process which is reflected in HN. Extended Texts are offered as evidence of the linguistic standard of HN and attitudes of Nahuas towards their language are presented. The final conclusion is that modern HN is a viable, vital and functional language at the time of undertaking this research and demonstrates a frequent usage by a large number of speakers. HN has still not entered into:. -avital process of language death, as is the case in other Nahuatl-speaking regions of Mexico, and is still being maintained, particularly at community level, by adults and children alike

BMOL(Hn) spaces and Carleson measures for Schrödinger operators

    No full text
AbstractLet L=−ΔHn+V be a Schrödinger operator on the Heisenberg group Hn, where ΔHn is the sub-Laplacian and the nonnegative potential V belongs to the reverse Hölder class BQ2. Here Q is the homogeneous dimension of Hn. In this article we investigate the dual space of the Hardy-type space HL1(Hn) associated with the Schrödinger operator L, which is a kind of BMO-type space BMOL(Hn) defined by means of a revised sharp function related to the potential V. We give the Fefferman–Stein type decomposition of BMOL-functions with respect to the (adjoint) Riesz transforms R˜jL for L, and characterize BMOL(Hn) in terms of the Carleson measure. We also establish the BMOL-boundedness of some operators, such as the (adjoint) Riesz transforms R˜jL, the Littlewood–Paley function sQL, the Lusin area integral SQL, the Hardy–Littlewood maximal function, and the semigroup maximal function. All results hold for stratified groups as well

The Weight and Hopcount of the Shortest Path in the Complete Graph with Exponential Weights

    No full text
Both the hopcount HN (the number of links) and the weight WN (the sum of the weights on links) of the shortest path between two arbitrary nodes in the complete graph KN with i.i.d. exponential link weights is computed. We consider the joint distribution of the pair (HN,WN) and derive, after proper scaling, the joint limiting distribution. One of the results is that HN and WN, properly scaled, are asymptotically independent.Delft Institute of Applied MathematicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

FOURIER TRANSFORM FAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY OF HN2+_2^+ ON THE AILES BEAMLINE OF SYNCHROTRON SOLEIL

Author Institution: Ligne AILES, Synchrotron SOLEIL, L'Orme des Merisiers Saint-Aubin, 91192 Gif sur Yvette Cedex - FranceWe report the pure rotation spectrum of HN2+_2^+ measured by Fourier Transform (FT) absorption spectroscopy in the 20-40 cm1^{-1} spectral range. The cations are produced in a liquid nitrogen cooled hollow cathode discharge cell developed on the AILES beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL. The set-up was optimized by recording rotation-vibration spectra of H3+_3^+(ν2\nu_2 band centered at 2521 cm1^{-1}), HN2+_2^+ (ν1\nu_1 band centered at 3234 cm1^{-1}) and HCO+^+(ν1\nu_1 band centered at 3089 cm1^{-1}). Many rotation-vibration lines have been assigned for each ion and 5 pure rotational transitions have been detected for HN2+_2^+. These results demonstrate the feasibility to record far-infrared (far-IR) spectra of cationic species using FT broad band spectroscopy associated to the bright synchrotron radiation continuum as an alternative to laser-based frequency tunable techniques. In the presentation, we will describe the experimental set-up, the results obtained and the perspectives of this preliminary work which will rely on the exploitation of intense Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR)
