Linking genetic and aggression factors with criminal behaviour: a systematic review
No full textA substantial body of literature has suggested that biology and personality traits play a major role in predicting antisocial behaviour. Thus, the purpose of this article is to review the link between genetic and aggression factors with criminal behaviour. A systematic review was conducted to obtain relevant information regarding biological and psychological perspective on criminality in Sage, Elsevier and Google Scholar database. The results indicate that moderate-to-large number of variance in criminal behaviour is ascribed to genetic and aggressive factors. As an overall impact, the study provided implications to the concerned parties regarding the interpersonal elements that trigger antisocial behaviour hence a preventive measure to assist at-risk group can be initiated soon

Satu kajian ulasan sistematik telah dijalankan bagi mendapatkan maklumat lengkap berkaitan faktor pemangkin yang mendorong pembudayaan kesukarelawanan dalam kalangan masyarakat dengan menggunakan pangkalan data Elsevier dan Sage. Keputusan kajian menunjukkan bahawa faktor keperluan psikologi, faktor keperluan mendapatkan pengiktirafan dan ganjaran serta faktor pegangan agama menyumbang ke arah pembudayaan kesukarelawanan dalam kalangan masyarakat. Hasil kajian memberi implikasi terhadap keperluan pihak berkepentingan mengenai kepentingan budaya kesukarelawanan dalam usaha mencetus transformasi sosial serta mewujudkan anggota masyarakat yang penyayang, bertanggungjawab serta tidak mementingkan diri sendiri

“Even the hardest stone can fracture:” Racialization, Reproductive Control, and the Wake of Slavery in N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season
Get PDFWhen the science fiction and fantasy novel The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin won the Hugo Award in 2016, Jemisin became the first Black author to win the prestigious literary science fiction award. A departure from similar novels at the time, The Fifth Season has a strong understanding of systems of oppression and how they are built and upheld. This thesis argues that The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin follows the conventions of the neo-slave/meta-slave narrative to explore themes of racialization and reproductive control under enslavement and oppression. I conduct a feminist literary of the novel, focusing on these themes, and ground my analysis firmly in Black feminist thought and the study of Black science fiction. Using authors such as Dorothy E. Roberts and Angela Y. Davis, I explore the ways in which Black women in America had their reproduction controlled for dehumanization and profit, as well as how they resisted such control. Using this historical context to read The Fifth Season, I demonstrate how Jemisin’s neo-/meta-slave narrative incorporates these themes of reproductive control and racialization, using the genre of science fiction to re-discover and re-imagine the personal experiences of enslaved women lost to history
Datasets of demographic profile and perpetrator experience in committing crime among young offenders in Malaysia
Get PDFThe datasets in this article provides supplementary information related to: (1) demographic profile of young offenders and (2) perpetrator experience in committing a crime. A quantitative approach based on a cross-sectional survey design was employed to collect data among 306 young offenders undergoing Community Service Order initiated by the Malaysian Social Welfare Department. The resultant data were analysed descriptively using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The result stipulates that the majority of respondents are consist of male young offenders aged 20 years old, Malays, single in marital status, and unemployed. Based on the crime involvement aspect, the result indicates that young offenders involved in stealing (26.1%), does not carry any weapons while committing a crime (50.0%), and entangled in criminal activity due to peer influence (40.0%). Moreover, unfavorable luck contributes to the failure in executing crime (52.6%) which subsequently leads them to be arrested by the police (52.0%)
Cybercrime Threat Landscape amid the Movement Control Order in Malaysia
Get PDFThe COVID-19 pandemic has evolved rapidly and affected almost all the world's countries, creating unprecedented chaos on human lives, physical health, mental wellbeing, and the world economy. During this time, digital space has become an indispensable global means of communication, entertainment, and social interaction. However, high reliance on digital tools increases the risk of being prey to cyberattacks. In order to explore the cybercrime threat landscape, empirical research was conducted to examine the shared experiences related to cybercrime threats during the enforcement of the Movement Control Order in Malaysia. Data was collected using an online survey among 332 respondents across Malaysia. The finding stipulated that most of the respondents comprised females aged between 18 and 28 years old. The result also indicated that majority of female became victims of online phishing/malware distribution [(M = 0.58, SD = 0.13); t (113) = 2.24, p = 0.02] and online sexual harassment [(M = 0.56, SD = 0.11); t (107) = 2.38, p = 0.01]. The understanding of cybercrime experiences faced by the public during MCO is essential to help law enforcement agencies to stay vigilant on issues related to public safety and security during unprecedented conditions

Estranging Allegory through Worldbuilding in the Works of N.K. Jemisin

Jemisin has become an important voice in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and speculative fiction writers, using her storyworlds to reflect on the world through a post-colonial lens that reveals and critiques issues of race, racism, white supremacy, and other aspects of destructive whiteness. Science fiction and fantasy are literatures of estrangement, and they use that framework to interrogate complicated ideas and issues. The worldbuilding of these genres is essential to this process, providing the mechanism to create unfamiliar conditions and circumstances that facilitate estrangement and defamiliarization. Worldbuilding is a collaborative process between the author and the reader, with the author’s worldbuilding informing how the reader subsequently recreates the imagined world. Building on previous scholarship that explores the allegorical nature of Jemisin’s works and defamiliarization in her writing, I propose that a key aspect of Jemisin’s worldbuilding is that she takes the critical elements of the allegory or theme and builds them each into the storyworld independent of each other. Estranging the allegory in the storyworld this way creates space between the elements in the reader’s worldbuilding that reinforces defamiliarization, and can circumvent alienating associations from the real-world context. Ultimately, reconciling the estranged allegory may increase understanding of and empathy for experiences outside of their own in the reader. This thesis examines how the themes in two of Jemisin’s novels, The Fifth Season and The City We Became, are estranged and defamiliarized through the worldbuilding, with an interest in how the key elements of the thematic allegory are estranged from one another and defamiliarized independently in the text, and how the level of estrangement of the storyworld affects how this dynamic
