The etiology of esophageal cancer in high- and low- risk areas of Jiangsu province, China

    No full text
[Background]Esophageal cancer (EC) remains one of the most common and fatal malignancies worldwide. The geographic variation in EC occurrence is striking, and China is an area with one of the highest incidences of EC. A number of epidemiological studies have been conducted toward EC in the past decades, results suggested that tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, unhealthy dietary factors and chronic injuries of the esophageal mucosa are important in the development of this disease. Genetic polymorphisms in enzymes involved in metabolism of carcinogens may also influence individual susceptibility. However, the effects of major lifestyle and hereditary risk factors on the development of EC remain poorly understood in China. Moreover, little attention has been paid to the etiological heterogeneity between similar areas with great risk gradient. [Methods]From 2003 to 2007, a large population-based case-control study of EC has been conducted in a selected high-risk area and a selected low-risk area of Jiangsu Province, one of the highest cancer incidence areas in China. In total, 1,520 cases and 3,879 controls were recruited. In this thesis, we evaluated the role of major lifestyle factors such as tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking and dietary factors, as well as inherited determinants including family history of cancer and genetic polymorphisms of alcohol-metabolizing related genes on the risk of EC. In addition, we investigated how much of the risk gradient between two areas could be explained by variation in the distributions of major risk factors. [Results] Tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking moderately increased the risk of EC, while the positive associations were only found among men but not among women. Dietary factors were observed to play important roles in the development of EC. Specific dietary habits i.e., fast eating speed, and hot eating and/or drinking substantially elevated EC risk and could explain more than 20% of EC cases each. High intake of salty foods and fried foods, low consumption of raw garlic were also observed to increase the risk of EC. In addition to environmental and lifestyle factors, we confirmed that a positive family history can significantly increase EC risk, and found the inheritance may modify the effect of some unhealthy lifestyles. Moreover, we further explored the relationship between EC and single nucleotide polymorphismsof ADH1B, ADH1C and ALDH2 genes. Results showed that the slow metabolizing ADH1B G allele, ADH1C G allele and ALDH2 A allele significantly increased EC risk among moderate-to-heavy alcohol drinkers, and a significant interaction was observed between ALDH2 gene and alcohol consumption. Lastly, we found that more than 60% of EC cases could be attributable to major lifestyle risk factors in the study population; furthermore, dissimilar distribution of several lifestyle factors, together with variations of hereditary factors may be largely responsible for the incidence difference between two study areas. [Conclusion]The findings in this thesis confirm that unhealthy lifestyles including smoking, alcohol drinking and some dietary factors are the predominant risk factors of EC in China, and a large proportion of incidence difference between regions at varying risk could be attributed to the different prevalence of lifestyle factors. As most of the identified risk factors are modifiable, these could be translated into risk reduction prevention programs in China, and a substantial proportion of new EC cases are expected to be prevented by eliminating or avoiding these risk factors in the population. </p

    No full text
This study quantitatively explores which characteristics of Vietnamese provinces attract Taiwanese outward investment by a spatial autoregressive model. The author also uses a qualitative approach to further understand the logic behind my finding in the quantitative analysis. This study finds that industrial park is the most important factor to attract Taiwanese investors. Yet, it seems not come from only the agglomeration effect. In Vietnam, Taiwanese investment tends to locate in industrial parks, because the industrial park can provide a safer investment environment, where the regulations can make Taiwanese small and medium enterprises feel more guaranteed

Women in African Drama: Representation and role

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the representation and role of women in African theatre. The discussion is based on published and unpublished plays by African writers selected from a pan-African perspective. The thesis is divided into two major parts: Women in Society; The Portrayal of Women by Major Playwrights. Part I follows a thematic approach aimed at examining the position of women in three different areas which form the chapters for the part : Women, Tradition and Social Change; The Urban Woman and Women in Politics. Part II of the thesis analyses major African playwrights' presentation of women characters. This part discusses not only the characterization of women by major playwrights but also these writers' attitude towards women and women's issues. Examined here in two chapters are The Portrayal of Women by Major Male Playwrights and The Portrayal of Women by Major Female Playwrights. Chapter 1, 'Women, Tradition and Social Change' discusses selected playwrights' examination of African women's experiences in the traditional African setting as a major foundation of the present and future socio-political situation of the continent; this chapter is the springboard of the study. From the traditional milieu the study then moves on to the relatively new urban environment. This Chapter examines the predicaments in which the African woman finds herself as she struggles to survive in a world which differs significantly from the traditional one. Survival in the urban environment demands a certain degree of autonomy from communal ties on the part of the individual. Yet in the case of the African woman, society does not hesitate to censure her movements and even to point an accusing finger at her for failing to satisfy traditional expectations when she is genuinely trying to meet the challenges presented by life in towns. The myth that a woman's place is exclusively in the kitchen is a widespread one the world over. A more negative myth found in Africa is that participation of women in public affairs leads to social disaster. The third chapter of this study examines the role of African women in politics in the traditional and contemporary periods. The fourth chapter discusses the portrayal of women by major male playwrights. Of great significance in this analysis is the attitude of these male writers towards women and also towards issues affecting women. It is for this reason that cross-references are made between these male writers and the female playwrights examined in Chapter 5. Very negligible research has been done on drama by African women. It is in recognition of this unfortunate situation that the fifth and last chapter of this thesis is dedicated to women's self-perception as reflected in their portrayal of fellow-women in theatre. This chapter examines only major female playwrights; the minor female playwrights are examined alongside the male in the appropriate areas in Chapters 1 to 3

M.Phil.The nitrogen-vacancy center (NV center) in diamond is by far one of the most popular systems for sensing purposes. This can be attributed to its ease of optical detection at room temperature and its stability in nanostructures. In this work, we use the optically-detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectrum of the NV centers to sense hydrostatic pressures, quasi-hydrostatic pressures and beyond. By observing the shift of the two peaks of the ODMR spectrum, we show that the current NV centers retain most of their sensitivity at varying temperatures and pressures. On the other hand, the nanodiamond as an interesting material for pressure gradients detection enables us to experimentally establish a NV-based pressure mapping method, which would become a powerful technique for high pressure physics.High pressure physics needs to determine pressure and its distribution. Ruby is the most widely used sensor so far. Using the optical transitions of Ruby to measure pressure has typical drawbacks - the measurement is extremely sensitive to temperature and the size of the sensors is quite big. However, the metrology applications of NV in nanodiamond have stable performance at fluctuating temperatures. In addition, the NV center allows manual temperature correction. Compared to other pressure measurement techniques that are typically only sensitive to one point or part of the pressurized area, our results have spurred powerful new techniques to measure pressure and enable the implementation of spatial pressure mapping which could help improve sensing accuracy. Furthermore, we experimentally provide new perspective on the employment of the NV center, enabling it to be pressure sensor, and capable of analyzing the center's metrology applications under high pressure conditions. We can also use NV center to sense wavefunctions by examining its ¹³C hyperfine interactions under high and low pressures. According to the nature of the hyperfine interaction, it strongly depends on the relative positions of the nuclear and electron orbitals, so we have opportunity to monitor the effect of mechanical stress on the NV center. This is an extremely exciting attempt to measure the electronic spin density of NV center due to deformation of the diamond lattice. Thesis M.Phil. The Practice-as-Research Enquiry of \ue2Arts of self-healing\ue2: \ue2Red Bricks as an Example

    No full text
The research idea for this essay emerged from the author's participation in the creation of the exhibition space of Red Bricks (2020) which originally was a piece of theater work. Through the immersive form of art exhibition, the work aims to bring the viewer back to one of the events of the Anti-China Extradition in Hong Kong in 2019 - the Siege of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The author uses the Practice as Research approach (i.e., a research process in which theory and practice are complementary and inseparable) applied by scholar Yi-Chen Wu, in her creative theatre design and links this research on how Expressive Art Therapy can move from the idea of healing the self to the inspiration of creativity. Guided by Practical as Research, the author focuses on art therapist Pat B. Allen's (2013) concept of \ue2Arts of Self-healing\ue2, which is a process of spiritual exploration to break through inner fears and sorrows to find the source of inspiration for creating art and design. This is complemented by Bruce L. Moon's (2011) concept of \ue2Existential Art Therapy\ue2, which explores the answers to life's questions through existentialist philosophy to make art therapy more comprehensive. Apart from helping the author to confront relevant political issues in a positive manner, this direction of research is also effective in enhancing the author's conceptual breakthrough in spatial design. In the process of interweaving spatial design and theories, the author intends to discuss and validate two points. Firstly, how the practical study of \ue2Expressive Art Therapy\ue2 has enabled the author to achieve the effect of \ue2Arts of Self-healing\ue2 in the aesthetic practice of depicting her own insecurities. Secondly, the author has transformed the symbols of painting in the process of \ue2Arts of Self-healing\ue2 into a unique creative inspiration in this study, thus bringing a new dimension to the creation of spatial design
