Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Ecological Features and Conservation of Urtica rupestris Guss. (Urticaceae): A Narrow Endemic Species of Sicily
The conservation actions of endangered plant species require a clear knowledge of their habitats. Urtica rupestris Guss. (Urticaceae) is a rare endemic plant species occurring on shady cliffs in the southern-eastern part of Sicily. In the last century, the extreme anthropogenic alterations of Hyblaean plateau have caused the continuous and unrestrained fragmentation of natural habitats and consequently the reduction and disappearance of some plant species. A total of 52 vegetation plots, of which 34 are unpublished, were analyzed in order to characterize the floristic composition of the U. rupestris community. All the releves were classified using classification and ordination methods. The species is mainly linked to shady and wet rock habitats, and only secondarily colonizes the undergrowth shrubs. According to IUCN criteria, we propose a new risk status for this species and the establishment of a new habitat (92/43CEE) for correct long-term conservation. Finally, a new association, Urtico rupestris-Adiantetum capilli-veneris, which falls within the Polysticho setiferi-Phyllitidion scolopendrii alliance (Adiantetea capilli-veneris class), was described. This study can provide useful information for the management and conservation of U. rupestris
Cyclamen brulloi (Primulaceae), a new species from Sicily (Italy)
A new species, Cyclamen brulloi, is described and illustrated from Sicily (Italy). This is an Autumn flowering species belonging to Cyclamen subg. Cyclamen and it is currently restricted to some localities of western Sicily, where it grows on carbonatic rocks and in rocky crevices. This taxon shows close relationships both with C. hederifolium and C. africanum. However, several morphological and karyological features are clearly different. Morphology, pollen grain micromorphology, karyology (2n = 4x = 68), ecology, conservation status and taxonomic relationships of the new taxon with the most allied species are presented
Ultrasound assessment of diaphragm function in patients with late-onset Pompe disease
Introduction: Late-Onset Pompe Disease (LOPD) is characterized by progressive limb-girdle muscle weakness and respiratory dysfunction. Diaphragm is the most impaired muscle in LOPD and its dysfunction cause major respiratory symptoms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between diaphragm thickness and mobility assessed by ultrasonography and respiratory function and muscle strength tests in patients with LOPD. Methods: 17 patients with LOPD (9 female, 47 ± 15 years) and 17 age and gender-matched healthy controls underwent spirometry, muscle strength testing, and ultrasound evaluation of diaphragm excursion and thickness. Results: The following parameters were significantly reduced in LOPD patients versus controls (all p < 0.001): forced vital capacity (FVC) in seated and supine position, maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressure (MIP and MEP), diaphragm excursion, thickness at functional residual capacity (FRC) and total lung capacity (TLC), and thickness fraction (TF). Ultrasound studies of diaphragm thickness at FRC correlated with MIP (r = 0.74; p < 0.0001) and seated FVC(r = 0.73; p < 0.05). Diaphragm thickness at TLC correlated with MIP (r = 0.85; p < 0.0001) and FVC in both seated (r = 0.77; p < 0.0001) and supine position (r = 0.68; p < 0.05). TF correlated significantly with MIP (r = 0.80; p < 0.001), FVC in both seated (r = 0.66; p < 0,005) and supine position (r = 0.61; p < 0.05). Interestingly diaphragm thickness at FRC correlated with disease duration (years) in LOPD patients (r = −0.53; p < 0,05). Ultrasound diaphragm mobility correlated with diaphragm thickness at TLC(r = 0.87; p < 0.0001), FRC (r = 0.84; p < 0.005) and TF (r = 0.73; p < 0.05). Moreover diaphragm mobility correlated with FVC in seated(r = 0.79; p < 0.005) and supine position(r = 0.74; p < 0.05) and MIP (r = 0.81; p < 0.005). Conclusion: Diaphragm ultrasonography is a simple and reproducible technique for manage respiratory dysfunction in LOPD patients
