Chapter 09: Reflections on Dr. Clifton Mountain and Data Collection Roles at MD Anderson
Mrs. Hermes begins this chapter with memories of how much she enjoyed working for Dr. Mountain over the course of 25 years. He taught her how to think about data, she explains, and she was listed as an author on a number of publications on lung cancer [see examples below]. She explains that Dr. Mountain left MD Anderson in 1993, but she continued to work freelance for him. She recalls that he set up the first conference on mathematics at MD Anderson, early in his career sometime in the sixties.
Next she comments on how the unique openness of Houston culture fit well with the bold visions that both R. Lee Clark and Eleanor MacDonald held for oncology. She says that her most important work was on Dr. Mountain’s staging system for lung cancer and she explains why staging the disease presented challenges.

Chapter 09: Creating a New Way of Conducting Research and Caring for Patients in a Changing Environment
In this chapter, Dr. Dmitrovsky provides an overview of how MD Anderson must operate in the new environment of research and healthcare economics. He begins by explaining that scientific endeavors traditionally rely on decisive discoveries by individual investigators that also reveal opportunities to development treatments. Today, he says, this process moves ahead via team- and interdisciplinary science, and the institution must educate the next generations of researchers in this way of conducting research. At the same time, MD Anderson must operate in a context of a flat NIH budget while responding to the new economics of the Affordable Care Act. Next, he notes that MD Anderson is supporting the education of the next generation by making investments in junior faculty with the R. Lee Clark Fellowship Program. He explains the award (juried by experts outside of MD Anderson). Next Dr. Dmitrovsky notes that reductions are being made to the length and complexity of informed consent forms so faculty can spend less time on paperwork and more time for their primary activities. He then speaks briefly about faculty recruitment and retention efforts. Then Dr. Dmitrovsky talks about strategies used to encourage interdisciplinary investigation. He speaks in detail about finding ways to provide team members with proper recognition for their contributions (when contribution is traditionally measured by first or last author status) and linking credit to faculty promotion. Kurt R. Weiss
Dr. Kurt R. Weiss is an associate professor in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology. He has joint appointments in Surgical Oncology and Pathology. He serves as an Advisory Dean for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and as Vice Chair of Translational Research for his Department. His research career began as an undergraduate student at Notre Dame when he worked in the Ferguson Laboratory with Dr. Christopher Evans. During medical school at Jefferson Medical College, he performed a summer research internship with Dr. Eugenie Kleinerman at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Between his second and third years of medical school he participated in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute/National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program where he worked in Dr. Lee Helman’s Laboratory in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Pediatric Oncology Branch. During residency he performed original osteosarcoma research during his lab year with Dr. Johnny Huard. After his fellowship in Musculoskeletal Oncology at the University of Toronto with Drs. Jay Wunder and Peter Ferguson, Dr. Weiss was recruited back to Pittsburgh by his Chairman, Dr. Freddie Fu, as faculty and started his own Lab.
The Musculoskeletal Oncology Laboratory (MOL) is focused on sarcoma metastatic potential. Dr. Weiss’s team of PhD collaborators, residents, medical students, undergraduate students, and technicians perform basic and translational sarcoma research experiments. Much of this work is accomplished with samples from the Musculoskeletal Oncology Tumor Registry and Tissue Bank (MOTOR) that Dr. Weiss and his clinical partners established in 2012. The MOTOR now holds over 16,000 unique samples from over 600 sarcoma patients with clinical annotation, making it one of the largest sarcoma tissue repositories in the country. This resource provides vital biological reagents for both intramural and extramural sarcoma investigators who collaborate with the MOL.
Dr. Weiss is an author on over 80 peer-reviewed publications. He recently finished his term as Research Committee Chair for the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the largest professional society for musculoskeletal oncology surgeons on the continent of North America. He is on the Mentorship Committee for the Connective Tissue Oncology Society, for which he has also served on the Board of Directors. He was recently named to the Scientific Steering Committee of the Sarcoma Alliance for Research through Collaboration (SARC), the largest private supporter of sarcoma clinical trials in the world. He has taught at the Orthopedic Research Society grant writing course for many years. Dr. Weiss is a regular reviewer for NCI grant applications and was on the inaugural Programmatic Panel for the Department of Defense Rare Cancers Research Program. His funding sources have included K08 and R21 awards from the NCI as well as the support of numerous foundations including the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation and the Connective Tissue Oncology Society. "A man who touched the lives of thousands around our planet passed to his rest on December 12, 1985, in Loma Linda, California. Roy Allan Anderson, affectionately known to many as “The Chief,” was an active evangelist, teacher, editor, author and pastor for 67 years. Forty-three of those years were mainly spent in training ministers, either in classes or in field schools of evangelism in many major cities of the world.
Dr. Anderson served as the association head and Ministry magazine editor for 16 of the 25 years he spent
in the General Conference ministerial association.
The second of five children, he was born in Melbourne, Australia, on March 15, 1895. In 1930, after an
evangelistic career in Australia, he went to England at age 34. In 1938, he was appointed chairman of the La Sierra College religion department.
His musical talents were exhibited at the age of 17 when he organized his first band of over 50 members. He
compiled several songbooks. He was granted a Doctor of Divinity degree by Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, in 1963. Upon his official retirement in 1966, he taught in the division of religion at Loma Linda University until 1980. Then, at the age of 85, he retired fully from teaching and began concentrating on his writing. The most influential work from his pen was The Shepherd Evangelist. He took a leading role in compiling the book Evangelism.

Doris; one granddaughter, three great-grandsons and many nephews and nieces."

Aspectos ecológicos da formação em um manguezal em área de aterro hidráulico (via expressa sul, Fpolis, SC), através de mapeamento
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências Biológicas. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Biologia VegetalA execução do aterro hidráulico da Via Expressa Sul, localizado no setor centro-sul do distrito sede de Florianópolis, Ilha de Santa Catarina, teve início no ano de 1995, e foi finalizado em 1997 (aterro bruto). Seu objetivo principal foi buscar a melhoria da rede viária em direção ao sul da Ilha. No entanto, o aterro propiciou à vegetação de manguezal, e comunidade biótica associada, um novo ambiente de colonização. Com efeito, este ecossistema, em que a vegetação é o principal representante, desenvolveu-se rapidamente, em um curto intervalo de tempo. Com o propósito de entender os aspectos ecológicos atuantes no desenvolvimento rápido deste tipo vegetacional ao longo do aterro hidráulico, e sua expansão ao longo do mesmo, o presente trabalho buscou mapear diferentes fases da ocupação da vegetação, em cinco anos diferentes (1994, 1997, 2002, 2004 e 2007). Em complemento, foram feitas coletas de informações em campo, mediante observação direta da vegetação e levantamento fotográfico, e medições biométricas e do ambiente físico, em campo, através de 02 estações de coleta de dados, necessários a uma caracterização e compreensão da dinâmica ocorrente neste ambiente. Enquanto o mapeamento permite demonstrar a evolução da vegetação, desde ano posterior à execução do aterramento (1994), até uma situação atual, os dados complementares (observação direta, biometria e parâmetros do meio físico) possibilitam, de uma maneira geral, o conhecimento da estrutura da comunidade vegetal do manguezal propriamente dito, e as características do meio físico em que está inserida. Assim, os dados reunidos, especialmente os oriundos do mapeamento, revelam que houve, de maneira geral, um aumento na cobertura vegetal sobre a área de estudo. The implementation of hydraulic landfill south of Via Express, located in central-southern sector of the district headquarters of Florianopolis, Ilha de Santa Catarina, began in 1995 and was completed in 1997 (landfill gross). Its main goal was to seek improvement of road network toward the south of the island. However, the landfill provided the vegetation of mangrove and associated biotic community, a new environment of colonization. Indeed, this ecosystem, where the vegetation is the main representative, has grown rapidly in a short period of time. In order to understand the ecological aspects working in the rapid development of this type vegetation along the embankment hydraulic, and its expansion over the same, this work sought map different stages of the occupation of vegetation in different five years (1994, 1997, 2002, 2004 and 2007). In addition, collections were made in the field of information through direct observation of vegetation and photographic survey, and biometric measurements and the physical environment, in the field, through 02 stations for data collection, required a characterization and understanding of the dynamics in this environment. While the mapping allows demonstrate the evolution of vegetation, since years after the implementation of the grounding (1994), to a current situation, the additional data (direct observation, biometrics and parameters of physical environment) allow, in general, knowledge of structure of the mangrove plant community itself, and the characteristics of the physical environment in which it is inserted. Thus, the data gathered, especially those from the survey show that there was, in general, an increase in vegetation cover over the area of study

Learning the English past tense is characterized by a U-shaped learning function for the irregular verbs. Existing cognitive models rely on a sudden increases in vocabulary, a high token-frequency of regular verbs, and convoluted schemes of feedback in order to model this phenomenon. All these assumptions are at odds with empirical data. In this paper a hybrid ACT-R model is presented that shows U-shaped learning without direct feedback, changes in vocabulary, or unrealistically high rates of regular verbs. The model is capable of learning the default rule, even if regular forms are infrequent. It can also help explore the question of why there is a distinction between regular and irregular verbs in the first place, by examining the costs and benefits of both types of verbs
