Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The psychology of mother language: Diversity or adversity towards peace building and cohesion among ethnic communities in Kenya

Human Communication is inseparable from human language. Miscommunication, misinterpretation and non-communication can contribute to conflict. The psychology of mother language is key in the interpretation and meaning of words. Usually, conflict between different ethnic groups often result from different language contact. Kenya, a multi-ethnic society has experienced a myriad of conflicts in the recent past. An effective conflict resolution tool should take the cultural and linguistic factors into consideration. A language learned in childhood carries strong emotional resonances while ethnic identity is a manner in which persons, on account of their ethnic origin, locate themselves psychologically in relation to which they perceive others as locating them in relation to those systems. Most Kenyan children are denied a chance of developing literacy in their mother language denying them of their culture, their language and history losing confidence in themselves, family, society and their nation. Patriotism becomes elusive. They may become vulnerable to radicalization. It is against this backdrop that this paper sought to determine the state of peace among ethnic communities in Kenya, the role of mother language in enhancing peace and determine whether mother language diversity fuels adversity and explain the psychology of mother language on peace building and cohesion

Teenage pregnancy: A psychosocial burden on girlchild education in Kenya

In January 2020 world Health Organization (WHO) declared an outbreak of a new Coronavirus disease, COVID-19 to be a public health emergency of international concern and could spread around the world. March 2020 WHO declared it a pandemic. Governments and communities around the world are struggling to contain and respond to this challenge, which threatens to undo decades of progress, including towards ending child, early and forced marriage. With the continued spread of the virus in Kenya, women, girls and children face increased and multiple challenges including physical and psychological violence related to family confinement, isolation and economic vulnerability. The restriction and stay home orders across the globe, including Kenya, do not prescribe measures that should be taken for family set ups with ongoing domestic violence. A sharp surge in reported teenage pregnancies is threatening to cut short the pursuit of education for vulnerable girls, with the latest statistics revealing that a total of 3,964 girls aged 19 years and under were reported pregnant in Machakos county in Kenya over a period of four months. While the government of Kenya is committed to ensure availability of sexual and reproductive health services for and Adolescent Girls and Young Women to end violence against women and girls, deliberate measures must be put in place to ensure that economic incentives and social safety nets are gender-sensitive and empower every adolescent girl and young woman during the global pandemic. &nbsp

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Gender disparity is a phenomenon that rises above most of the world's societies, religions, countries and wage gatherings. In many social orders, the distinctions and disparities are show in the obligations each are relegated, in the exercises they embrace, in their entrance to and control over assets and in basic leadership openings. This study examined to gender inequalities in women’s land use in Agricultural Value Chains in Ainabkoi Sub County, Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. The study was guided by Sen’s Entitlement Theory. The study adopted mixed research design. Descriptive research methodology was used to design data collection instruments. The researchers used questionnaire, interview schedule guide, focus group discussion and document analysis to collect data. A sample of 153 was drawn from a population of 1,224 using random and purposive sampling. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected. Quantitative data was analyzed using Statistical Packages of Social Sciences generating descriptive statistics which included percentages, mean and standard deviation. Qualitative data was analyzed by highlighting significant statements and coming up with themes which were used to develop descriptions of the participant experiences and descriptions of the context or settings that influence the experience. These descriptions were unified into structural and textural description giving a unified descriptive account of the quantitative data. The findings showed that gender inequalities were prevalent in land use, financial use and access to extension services among men and women that affect Agricultural Value Chains. The findings of this study will be useful to policy makers in formulating policies that will ensure gender equity in Agricultural Value Chains. The researchers recommend that service providers should foster equitable participation, recognize these gender inequalities as well as activities that meet the needs of both gender with considerations to the customary will. Practitioners should adopt effective communication channels to offer agricultural information. Further studies are required in other counties in this area to determine the inequalities in Agricultural land use and the best way to address them to enable women farmers participate in Agricultural Value Chains
