International audienceThe untold story of the kidnapping of Sinaitau’aga and its analysis are the starting point of this paper, which presents certain aspects of the ritual functions of the tapa of Wallis Island. It demonstrates that these ritual functions were mastered by women who created, put into circulation and used barkcloth, which became valuable items under their management. The use and ceremonial responsibility of barkcloth were complementary to the reproductive responsibilities that are also incumbent on women: shaping the bodies of their children, imparting a life force to the living beings they bring into the world. Through its enveloping function, tapa thus complement the skin in its enclosing of the body. It holds and preserves the principle of life that characterizes the living, particularly those of high status, faced with the afterlife, from which the latter re-emerge due to their intermediary position.
