Smoothly varying in-plane stiffness heterogeneity evaluated under uniaxial tensile stress

    No full text
Identification of spatially varying stiffness is a challenging, but important, research topic in the mechanics of materials and can provide the necessary information for material suitability, damage, and process control, especially for high-value applications. One homogeneous and 3 heterogeneous virtual field method (VFM) formulations were used to create a methodology for varying stiffness identification. Two finite element method simulations were used to demonstrate the validity and capability of the formulations. A tensile test protocol was implemented to identify spatially varying stiffness of uniaxial tensile paperboard specimens using digital image correlation. A recently published form of VFM, which enforces global equilibrium in the spatial frequency domain, was used to better examine smoothly varying stiffnesses. Two tensile specimens of a single commercial paperboard, known to contain heterogeneities, were examined, and local stiffnesses were identified. Examination of local equilibrium with VFM was used to explain differences in stiffness identification. A polyethylene terephthalate specimen was used to demonstrate homogeneity

Effect of Stabilizer on the Mechanical Properties of Rigid PVC

Title: Effect of Stabilizer on the Mechanical Properties of Rigid PVC, Author: Karl K.T. Woo, Location: ThodeIn this study commercial suspension polymerized polyvinyl chloride resin with different stabilizer contents was first compounded and injuctioned molded into small dumbbell shape specimens. Most of the specimens after annealing were then tested on the Instron Tensile Tester while the rest on iniature Tensile Tester for difference in mechanical properties. Four parameters from the stress-strain curves were of interest in this study: tensile yield stress, tensile modulus, elongation at fracture and ultimate fracture strength. The differences in mechanical properties were explained by the change in molecular structure of polyvinyl chloride brought about by the reaction between the stabilizer and PVC molecules. In the second part of the experiment, the effects of heat treatment and molecular weight on the mechanical properties of rigid PVC were also investigated.ThesisMaster of Engineering (ME

ENDOTHELIAL DYSFUNCTION INDICATORS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC CRITICAL LIMB ISCHEMIA   S.-K.T. Goni   Kharkiv National Medical University, Ministry of Health of Ukraine , Department of Surgery № 2   Abstract This article shows the results of determination of levels of direct and indirect indicators of endothelial dysfunction (ET1, VEGF, fibrinogen and CRP) in 29 patients with chronic critical limb ischemia with distal type of lesion of the vascular bed, aged from 59 to 84 years. Patients were of both sexes, of which 12 (41.4%) - patients with atherosclerosis and diabetes. It is shown that regardless of the stage of ischemia and the presence of diabetes in patients who were investigated, breach of vasomotor endothelial function (according to the level of endothelin-1), increased proliferative activity of endothelium (according to the level of VEGF), a violation of hemostatic (according to the level of fibrinogen) and proinflammatory endothelial function (based on C-reactive protein) was shown. Keywords: сritical limb ischemia, endothelial dysfunction, endothelin-1, VEGF, fibrinogen, C-reactive protei

POD-based analysis of flow past street canyons and buildings: flow feature isolation and its impact on pollutant dispersion

Atmospheric pollution has emerged as a critical environmental issue in the present era. As indicated by the World Health Organization in 2022, roughly whole universal contaminant (99%) is vulnerable to air that fails to meet the standard of living .Beyond decreasing automotive exhaust, enhancing road contaminant diffusion has been affirmed as an efficacious approach to mitigate such well-being venture. This work conducts LES based on ROM technique POD to model the traffic-induced flow field within a street canyon. The phenomenon mechanism is investigated by extracting the corresponding dominant modes. The flow pattern predicted by LES ideally accords with the skimming flow (SF) regime identified by previous field measurements and mathematical modeling results, which often occurs when the aspect ratio H/W is higher than 0.7. The results show that the flow pattern of POD mode 1, the most influential mode, contains several dominant frequencies and captures approximately 14% of the energy. It respectively leads to the flow acceleration near the stagnation point and the separation area caused by the blocking effect, and the forced separation caused by the upstream structure. In addition, this mode also controls the flow reattachment above the downstream structure to a certain extent. The frequency with the highest amplitude is 0.68 Hz, which is associated with the highly coherent structure existing in the flow field; Contaminant density behind structure arrangements depends on wind corridors. Smaller wind corridors enhance the acceleration of nearby airflow, while the reattachment phenomenon between adjacent corridors becomes unstable, resulting in a reduced impact range. A wider wind corridor can effectively reduce air contaminants in city areas, with removal effectiveness directly related to corridor breadth.</p

Advancing Methods For Evaluating Flood Risk Reduction Measures

    No full text
Flood risk reduction systems are applied worldwide to reduce flood risk and provide protection of flood prone areas. More and more, decision makers use risk-based approach for the design and implementation of interventions in these systems. This dissertation advances existing risk-based approaches for specific interventions within a flood risk reduction system. Highlights of this dissertation include i) quantifying the reliability of canal levees, ii) evaluating the effectiveness of emergency measures, iii) optimizing portfolios (of combinations) of risk reduction strategies: flood defences and/or land fills and iv) assessing the performance of innovative interventions for flood risk reduction.Hydraulic Structures and Flood Ris
