[[alternative]]Tang Jun-Yi' s Ethics and Life Philosophy
[[abstract]]唐君毅的儒學乃一大系統的人文之學,而其核心即為道德之學與生命之學;其間,並特別突出吾人之道德情感與道德理性,及其在倫理場域中所能發揮的意義效力。而若深究唐君毅此一力求人性之真、人道之善以至於人文之高明與博厚的新儒學思維的根源性、通貫性與終極性,則顯然可見其根柢乃在人心自覺之道,以及人我互為主體的感通之道,而由此一充滿人文意涵的自我存在之認知與世界真實之肯定,乃延展出生命多向度以至於精神全向度的道德踐履之道與倫理滿全之道,唐君毅的精神哲學即建立於此一基石之上,而其始終堅守「德行倫理」之立場,則已昭然若揭。至於唐君毅全力經營其試圖整合生命之體驗與終極之關懷的苦心孤詣,更有了「性情形上學」、「心靈形上學」與「境界形上學」三合一的況味,而此亦即唐君毅的儒學終究是一開放的人文之、道德之學與生命之學且足以返人文之本而開儒學之新局的緣由所在。[[abstract]]The Confucianism of Tang Jun-Yi covers the humanities in a systematic fashion. The core of his thinking is his studies in Ethics and Life philosophy, which has had a huge impact on the ethical sentiments and rationale of the Chinese people, as it has given us the opportunity to abstract effective meaning in the moral arena. If we delve deeper into Tang Jun-Yi's notions of the truth of human nature as well as the innate goodness and wisdom of humanity, we see it provides the source, continuity and aim of his Neo-Confucian thought. This offers a clear foundation for the notion of self-consciousness as well as how to relate to the other. Moreover it provides recognition of the self in the face of reality as well as a basis for the affirmation of life. This leads to the full moral practice, which is the cornerstone of Tang Jun=Yi's philosophy of the spirit, which obviously falls under the category of a virtue ethics. Tang Jun-Yi is intent on integrating life experience with the notion of ultimate concerns through the utilization of a metaphysics that includes the temperament, mind and realm. This Neo-Confucian approach gives us an open, humanistic, and moral direction for today's world
On Tang Jun-yi's Connection between Confucianism and Buddhism
儒佛間之關係是儒者不可逃避的問題,宋明儒者闢佛老,當代新儒家辨佛老,而唐君毅先生則是以儒者的角度嘗試貫通儒佛,此為當代新儒家中十分特殊而又有創新之義的努力。唐先生對儒佛之貫通,可從其廣博的作品中找到許多相關論述,然而最為完整而深入的,當為其晚年之作《生命存在與心靈境界》一書。唐先生以生命存在為基,分別展示心靈所次第開展之九境,其中以天德流行之境為最終極而涵攝其他諸境,其中也包含佛教。本文首先說明唐先生主觀之興教要求與客觀之理據,此理據包含精神之絕對自我以及其次第發展之歷程觀。至於內容,則筆者分別展示:聖人的超越型與圓滿型,思辨、想像與生命實踐之感動,積極的使用與消極的使用,興教的廣度與深度。最後,筆者肯定「貫通」的價值,然而也指出唐先生之次第安排是一合理但非唯一的安排,佛教亦可提出另一種合理的次第安排,此中仍有發展空間。同時,唐先生對於佛教的批評亦是開放的,一者佛教可以回答,二者儒學亦可能有相對之問題有待解決。唐先生的貫通儒佛之道是合理且有價值的論述,但並非排他性的,也不是唯一合理的論述,此為本文之總結。The relationship between Confucianism and Buddhism is an inescapable issue for Confucians. The Confucians in the Sung and Ming Dynasties refuted Buddhism and Taoism, and contemporary Neo-Confucians differentiate between Buddhism and Taoism, while Tang Jun-yi tried to make connection between Confucianism and Taoism, which is unique and innovative among other contemporary Neo-Confucians. Tang's efforts to make this connection can be found quite often in his writings, among which the most comprehensive and profound one is ”Existence of Life and Spiritual Realm”, published in his late years. Based on the existence of life, Tang showed the nine realms of the spirits, including Buddhism.Here, we first introduced Tang Jun-yi's subjective demand and objective grounds for the propagation of Buddhism. And then, we show the transcendental type and wholesome type of saints, speculation, imagination, the practice of life, the usage of activity and passivity, and the width and depth of Buddhism propagation. In conclusion, the writer approves the value of this ”connection.” Tang's criticism about Buddhism is open, as Buddhism can answer his criticism, and Confucianism might have equivalent problems to be solved. 'Li xing xin ling' de kai zhan: lun Tang Junyi de "Sheng ming cun zai yu xin ling jing jie" = An interpretation of Tang Jun-Yi’s “Life-existence and the horizons of heart-mind”
Ph.D.According to Tang Jun-Yi, human beings can be regarded in two aspects: as part of the nature and as a subject/agent. As part of the nature, human beings are no different from other objects, and it is sufficient that we understand a person with scientific methods. As a subject/agent however, a person is capable of reasoning, reflecting and valuing, he understands and acts on his own will. This aspect of human beings cannot be reduced to naturalistic concepts, such as evolution or instincts, and it is this aspect of human beings capture their real essence. Tang Jun- Yi calls this essence and capability the “Heart-mind’(心靈).It is worthy to note that Tang’s conception of Heart-mind stems from his interpretation of Confucianism’s theory of human nature, in which Heart-mind is the source of normativity and has the nature of pursuing moral goods.This thesis examines Tang Jun Yi’s last work, “Life-existence and the horizons of Heart-mind”. I argue that contrary to many who contends that Tang Jun Yi’s philosophy is established on a biased assumption that Confucianism is superior, his philosophy is an exhibition of philosophical reasoning. I offer a rationalist approach to interpret Tang Jun Yi’s philosophical framework, which I argue better explain his philosophical system.The thesis is presented with eight chapters. The first chapter elucidates the main theme of my thesis. Chapter 2 is a review of Tang Jun Yi’s earlier work, and aims to give a sketch of how his philosophy evolved. Chapter 3 clarify the core concepts of his philosophical system, “Life-existence and the horizons of Heart-mind”. In Chapter 4 I offer a philosophical framework to understand Tang’s philosophical system, in which I argue his philosophy is directed at the engagement of self-transforming in the Confucian sense. Chapter 5, 6 and 7 examines Tang Jun Yi’s epistemology, ethics, and religious philosophy respectively. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
