    Liquid metal enabled pump

    No full text
Small-scale pumps will be the heartbeat of many future micro/nanoscale platforms. However, the integration of small-scale pumps is presently hampered by limited flow rate with respect to the input power, and their rather complicated fabrication processes. These issues arise as many conventional pumping effects require intricate moving elements. Here, we demonstrate a system that we call the liquid metal enabled pump, for driving a range of liquids without mechanical moving parts, upon the application of modest electric field. This pump incorporates a droplet of liquid metal, which induces liquid flow at high flow rates, yet with exceptionally low power consumption by electrowetting/deelectrowetting at the metal surface. We present theory explaining this pumping mechanism and show that the operation is fundamentally different from other existing pumps. The presented liquid metal enabled pump is both efficient and simple, and thus has the potential to fundamentally advance the field of microfluidics.Shi-Yang Tang, Khashayar Khoshmanesh, Vijay Sivan, Phred Petersen, Anthony P. Copy of "David Mitchell and Descendants" originally written by Thomas Mitchell, Jr. The manuscript starts with David Mitchell, possibly a Revolutionary soldier, and details what is known about his life and those of his descendants. The record ends with the marriage of his widow, Sarah Patterson Mitchell Frear, to Abraham Frear. It states that she was the mother and grandmother of many Frears and Mitchells in the family. After the record, there is a note about the original manuscript's author; it was then copied by Ora Osterhout

Earlier this year, an article was published in the News Bulletin (February 2012) on the background of Captain Boyns Hedley Hocking, a dentist who became one of the first casualties in the bombing of Darwin in 1942. The author, W F Mitchell, has kindly provided a summary of the 70th anniversary activities held in Darwin in February 2012 to commemorate this significant event in the Northern Territory?s historyDate:2012-09News Bulletin no. 413, p. 36 - 37
