THE OBSESSION OF CONTROL IN THE CHARACTER “EVE BLACKWELL” IN SIDNEY SHELDON’S MASTER OF THE GAME

Meskipun mereka hidup secara berdampingan dalam lingkungan yang sama, kemungkinan akan terjadinya konflik sangatlah terbuka lebar. Dalam skripsi ini, penulis membahas jenis kepribadian narsisistik, konflik – konflik yang dihadapi. dengan orang – orang disekitarnya maupun dengan dirinya sendiri, serta berakhirnya obsesi untuk pengendalian dari tokoh bernama Eve Blackwell dalam novel berjudul Master of the Game karya Sidney Sheldon. Keinginan si tokoh untuk memenangkan perhatian sang nenek dari saudari kembarnya berkembang menjadi keinginan akan kepuasan lahir dan batin dengan mengendalikan orang – orang disekitarnya termasuk dalam hubungan seks. Tujuan penulisan skripsi ini adalah untuk memaparkan usaha – usaha Eve Blackwell, dalam novel Master of the Game karya Sidney Sheldon, untuk mengendalikan orang – orang disekitarnya, konflik – konflik yang dihadapinya dan juga akhir dari obsesi akan kendalinya.
Untuk menganalisis tokoh ini, penulis menggunakan metode pendekatan struktural dan psikologis dengan menggabungkan teori narsisisme dari Joanna M. Ashmun dan teori obsesi dari S. Rachman. Penulis mengumpulkan data – data yang dibutuhkan dengan menggunakan metode penelitian pustaka.
Setelah melakukan analisis yang ditunjang oleh data - data, kita dapat mengetahui bahwa orang berkepribadian narsisistik seperti tokoh Eve Blackwell , yang kekuatan utamanya ada pada parasnya yang cantik, dapat menghalalkan segala cara untuk mewujudkan keinginannya. Namun dalam usaha – usahanya tersebut muncul berbagai bentuk perlawanan yang akan berujung pada konflik, baik internal maupun eksternal. Di bagian akhir analisis, kita juga dapat mengetahui bahwa dominasi orang berkepribadian narsisistik dapat dihentikan oleh kemunculan orang yang tepat seperti Keith Webster, yang berprofesi sebagai dokter operasi plastik, di waktu yang tepat

The data are collected by focusing on the use personal pronouns by the author of the novel. The problem of the research is : what are the personal pronouns in term of form and function in the novel The Stars Shine Down By Sidney Sheldon. I, she, we, they, can be subjects of a verb. Example : I saw it. He knows you. They live near here. Complements of the verb to be : Example : It is I. Me, him, her, us, them can be direct objects of a verb : Example : I saw her. Tom likes them. Those concepts above will be used for identifying and analyzing data. The result shows that the forms of personal pronouns in the novel The Stars Shine Down By Sidney Sheldon are in singular and plural forms. In terms of the function, there are personal pronouns that have the function as a subject, object, possessive adjective and possessive pronoun in the sentences

This research discusses the main character’s defense mechanism in Sydney Sheldon The Naked Face. The research focuses on analyzing the main character of the novel. The novel received the mystery writers of America Edgar Allan Poe Award for best first novel by an American author. The thesis is becoming important and interesting to be analyzed because it can interpret how the main character’s struggle against the allegation of murder by building defense mechanism.
To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer goes through literary criticism to analyze the novel. Thus, the writer uses psychoanalysis approach and defense mechanism by Freud as the theory. The primary data of this study are collected from Sydney Sheldon The Naked Face novel. This research, the writer applies a psychological approach, especially on what is the form of defense mechanism done by the main character.
The result of this research shows that there are some actions done by the main character in building defense mechanism. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds how the main character’s struggle against allegation of murder by building defense mechanism. There are seven actions of defense mechanism. Those are displacement, denial, repression, and rationalization. The researcher also finds the reason why the main character struggle against the allegation of murderer by defense mechanism, it also the main character tries to prove that he is innocent.

Penelitian ini membahas tentang self defense mechanism pada karakter utama di novel “The Naked Face” karya Sidney Sheldon.Peneliti berfokus pada analisis karakter utama dalam novel. Novel ini menerima penghargaan penulis misteri Amerika oleh Edgar Allan Poe Award untuk novel pertama terbaik oleh seorang penulis Amerika. Penelitian ini sangat penting dan menarik untuk dilakukan karena dapat menginterpretasikan apa saja yang perjuangan tokoh utama melawan penyerangan dugaan pembunuhan dengan membangun mekanisme pertahanan atau defense mechanism.
Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian, penulis menggunakan kritik sastra dalam menganalisis novel.Dengan demikian penulis menggunakan pendekatan psikologi dan teori mekanisme pertahanan oleh Freud. Data utama dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari novel Sydney Sheldon dengan judul The Naked Face.Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menerapkan pendekatan psikologi terutama berfokus pada apa saja bentuk mekanisme pertahanan yang dilakukan oleh tokoh utama.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa tindakan yang dilakukan oleh tokoh utama dalam membangun mekanisme pertahanannya.Berdasarkan analisis, peneliti menemukan bagaimana perjuangan karakter utama terhadap tuduhan pembunuhan dengan membangun mekanisme pertahanan.Ada emppat tindakan mekanisme pertahanan yaitu perpindahan, penolakan, represi, rasionalisasi.Peneliti juga menemukan alasan mengapa karakter utama berjuang melawan tuduhan pembunuhan dengan membangun mekanisme pertahanan serta dalam dirinya serta mencoba membuktikan bahwa dia tidak bersalah

This study is chosen because the writer is interested in literature especially novels. The object of this study is The Best Laid Plans, a novel written by Sidney Sheldon.
This study takes Sidney Sheldon’s novel, The Best Laid Plans which focusses on the intrinsic aspects of The Best Laid Plans, namely : (1). The kinds of characterization of the main character; (2). The characterization development.
The purposes of this study are to analyze and to describe the kinds of characterizations that happen to the main character, to describe how the characterization developed. For these purposes, and to support the writer reviews reference materials such as the book on study and about the author, thesis, dictionaries, and also some literary theories.
The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Descriptive method is the method that describes and interprets about problems observed by the researcher. It concerns with the condition that exists, aptitude that is held, that process that is going on, and effects that are being felt. Qualitative means to analyze data by using the logical thinking carefully and systematically to get right conclusions. The approach used in this study is observing the literary work from the intrinsic elements by which study emphasizes on the main characters. After that the writers selects the supporting data and continues to the analysis of the characters and characterization of the main characters, those are Leslie Stewart, Oliver Russel and Senator Todd Davis.
From the result of the study, the following findings are presented. ,There are some characteization of the main charcters. Leslie Stewart was a smart and beautiful woman. She was public relations and advertising executives at the Lexington, Kentucky firm of Bailey and Tomkins. She realized that the power for several man is the most desire thin. At first, Leslie had plans that she would get married with Oliver Russel, who is very handsome. She tried hard to support Oliver’s Campaign to get the position. But Leslie felt that she was betrayed by Oliver, because he got married with Senator Todd Davis’ daughter, Jan. Because of this, she felt disappointed with Oliver until she tried hard to disturb Oliver’s efforts in getting the position both as a governor or the President of USA. Oliver was so angry with Leslie because he felt that Leslie always disturbed him by publishing her articles that discredited him. Oliver Russel was a brilliant man, handsome and the most eligible bachelon in the state. He was helped by Todd Davis to be a governor of Kentucky. Todd Davis was a rich senator and kind but he didn’t want to show his wealthy. He always influence the running of the story. For example, his influence to Oliver. First Todd Davis make Leslie Stewart betrayed by Oliver, second Oliver could become a governor or a president of USA because of his efforts.
The character development of Leslie Stewart was changed from good to be bad. ,The character of Oliver Russel was also changed from worse to better. But for the character development of senator Todd Davis is not change.
Finally, it is suggested that the novel is developed on the bases of American culture, so it will be better if one has adecuate knowledge about its culture, its people and its way of life in general. Example: how to get the power, how the people communicate each other, etc

Violation of Human Rights Delineated in Sidney Sheldon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? Novel (2004): A Sociological Approach
Get PDFThis research focuses on the human rights violation issue delineated in Are You Afraid of the Dark? novel (2004) by Sidney Sheldon. The perspective that is used in analyzing this novel is theory of sociology. This research uses documentation method to collect the data. This research is conducted to analyze the indicators of human rights violations in the novel, how the human rights violation is delineated in the work, and the reason of the author in addressing human rights violations issue. The researcher uses primary and secondary data source. Are You Afraid of the Dark? novel is the primary data source. Other book, journal, and website that relate the issue of human rights violations are the secondary data source. There are three main findings in this research. First, there are found five indicators of human rights violations in the novel such as violation of human rights to life, violation of human rights to free from torture, violation of human rights to get education, violation of human rights to work, and violation of human rights to get liberty. Second, the author delivers the idea of human rights violations through character, event, setting, and style in the novel. Third, the author addresses human rights violation issue based on the social situation where he lives in which war happens and human rights violations occur everywhere
Man in his native noblesse? : chivalry and the politics of the nobility in the tragedies of George Chapman
Get PDFIn this thesis I argue that the three plays under consideration - Bussy
D'Anbois, The Conspiracy and Tragedy of Charles Duke of Byron, and The
Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois - illustrate Chapman's concern with the role of
chivalry in England following the debacle of the Essex Rebel lion in 1601.
My contention is that, for Chapman, the Essex Rebellion exposed the
fragility and the inconsistencies of Elizabethan chivalry and the political
threat represented by its preoccupation with martial values.
I suggest that in his plays, Chapman sets out to deconstruct the myth
of chivalry by exposing it as a romantic concept which is used by the
martial nobility as a means of Emphasizing their political rights. The
values of chivalry - prowess, honour, loyalty, generosity, courtesy and
independence - are shown, by the plays, to be incompatible with the
political ambitions of the nobility. By associating themselves with this
mythical concept of chivalry, political figures cane to identify their
factions with the values of chivalry. Chapman, I argue, shows haw the myth
is established and then exposes it for what it is, by portraying his
characters as unable to live up to their expected mythical ideals.
Chivalry is stripped of its mythical trappings and exposed as militaristic,
aggressive and politically motivated.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first, I consider
Chapman alongside the Tacitean historians who were connected with the Essex
circle in the 1590s and show how, in The Conspiracy and Tragedy of Charles
Duke of Byron, the dramatist transformed the providentialist narrative of
his source into a play with Tacitean connotations, emphasizing the
relationship between chivalry and constitutional political theory. In the
second chapter I consider Chapman's interest in chivalry and discuss
generally the romantic concept of Elizabethan chivalry and its relationship
with the political concerns of the nobility. In Chapters Three to Five I
discuss Chapman's portrayal of chivalry and its political impliications

The medication vending machine would be able to dispense over the counter medicine (OTC) with contents that caters to the needs of the people in the area of deployment. The aim is to help people from rural areas have better access to OTC medicine with the use of vending machines. The medication vending machine will allow the people from the rural areas an easier access to medication without spending much on travelling or exerting effort in doing so. The medication vending machine would also provide a lower rate of human intervention since the machine will handle all the processing. The group aims to make over the counter medication more accessible in places that receive poor medical attention due to living circumstances. This may be an important step towards providing basic medication for our nations people
The life and works of James Miller, 1704-1744, with particular reference to the satiric content of his poetry and plays.
No full textPhDJames Miller was born the son of a Dorset rector in 1704. He
was himself ordained, but acquired no benefice until just before his
early death, probably because of a scathing portrayal of the Bishop
of London in one of his verse satires. At Oxford he wrote a vivacious
comedy of humours, set in the University. Its production in 1730
began his dramatic career, at a time when the number of London
theatres had just doubled, and new dramatic forms were being invented.
In 1731 his poem Harlequin-Horace, a witty inversion of
the Ars Poetica, attacked pantomime and opera, but also painted a
lively portrait of the entire theatrical world, in the tradition of
the Dunciad.
After collaborating in a translation of Moliere's works Miller
wrote two plays based on this author. Of all his dramatic works
these were the most successful with his contemporaries, and were
followed by a modernisation of Much Ado, and a ballad-opera adapted
from an afterpiece by Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, and rendered highly
topical. Miller made similar use of a recent French comedy showing
a Red Indian's reactions to civilisation, a satiric "fable" by Walsh
and Voltaire's Mahomet. A large quantity of original material was
incorporated into most of these, and this is generally satirical in
nature. The Indian is made to voice almost egalitarian sentiments.
An afterpiece, "The Camp Visitants", satirised military inaction
in the war, and was apparently banned. The manuscripts of the six
plays produced after the Licensing Act bear the examiner's deletions,
and illustrate the nature of the censorship at this time.
Miller's greatest strength is probably his flexible, vigorously
colloquial dialogue. His political satire is mostly contained in
the poetry, which attacks Walpole's administration with increasing
vehemence through the seventeen-thirties, until its fall. In 1740
two poems that used Pope in symbolic contrast to Walpole caused a
sensation. In both poetry and plays Miller is also a social satirist,
who lays unusually strong emphasis on false taste and the deterioration
of culture
