    Alex Toth and another Librarian examining a card catalog

    No full text
    Alex Toth, who was a Librarian at Pacific University, and another Librarian (possibly Patricia Sobottka?), examining a card catalog in Pacific's Scott Library in July, 1978. This appears to be the Author catalog, which provided access to the books in Pacific's collections based on the last name of the author. This is one of a set of photographs that appears to have been posed in order to demonstrate the range of work that was taking place in the library

    The Autonarratives of Ernest Hemingway (and Others)

    No full text
    Draws on the theories of Kenneth Burke, Julia Kristeva, and others in his examination of the complexity of self-representation found in A Moveable Feast. Toth analyzes Hemingway’s fictional construction of personal experience in “Miss Stein Instructs,” “Ford Madox Ford and the Devil’s Disciple,” “Birth of a New School,” and elsewhere. Concludes that the discreet sketches “emerge as a series of accurate yet always also contingent portraits—of Hemingway as a young author, of other famous writers working in the same place and time, of the specific events that defined the function of writing during the ‘Paris movement.’

    Purinergic signalling is required for calcium oscillations in migratory chondrogenic progenitor cells

    No full text
    Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of chronic musculoskeletal disorders. A migratory stem cell population termed chondrogenic progenitor cells (CPC) with in vitro chondrogenic potential was previously isolated from OA cartilage. Since intracellular Ca2+ signalling is an important regulator of chondrogenesis, we aimed to provide a detailed understanding of the Ca2+ homeostasis of CPCs. In this work, CPCs immortalised by lentiviral administration of the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) and grown in monolayer cultures were studied. Expressions of all three IP(3)Rs were confirmed, but no RyR subtypes were detected. Ca2+ oscillations observed in CPCs were predominantly dependent on Ca2+ release and store replenishment via store-operated Ca2+ entry; CPCs express both STIM1 and Orai1 proteins. Expressions of adenosine receptor mRNAs were verified, and adenosine elicited Ca2+ transients. Various P2 receptor subtypes were identified; P2Y(1) can bind ADP; P2Y(4) is targeted by UTP; and ATP may evoke Ca2+ transients via detected P2X subtypes, as well as P2Y(1) and P2Y(2). Enzymatic breakdown of extracellular nucleotides by apyrase completely abrogated Ca2+ oscillations, suggesting that an autocrine/paracrine purinergic mechanism may drive Ca2+ oscillations in these cells. As CPCs possess a broad spectrum of functional molecular elements of Ca2+ signalling, Ca2+-dependent regulatory mechanisms can be supposed to influence their differentiation potential

    LINE WIDTHS OF H2O+AIR,HDO+N2H_{2}O + AIR, HDO + N_{2} AND N2O+N2N_{2}O + N_{2}

    No full text
    Author Institution:Collision broadened line widths of H2O+airH_{2}O + air and HDO+N2HDO + N_{2} were determined from high resolution spectra covering the ν1,2ν2andν3\nu_{1}, 2\nu_{2} and \nu_{3} bands for both absorbing molecules. The N2O+N2N_{2}O + N_{2} line widths encompassed the spectral regions of the (1200), (2000), (0111), (0201), (1001) and (0002) bands. The N2ON_{2}O band notation is (ν1,ν2,,ν3)(\nu_{1}, \nu_{2},\ell,\nu_{3}). The H2O+airH_{2}O + air and HDO+N2HDO + N_{2} measurements were obtained for samples at room temperature and the N2O+N2 N_{2}O + N_{2} spectra were obtained for samples at 296K {296}^{\circ} K and 220K{220}^{\circ} K . The N2O+N2(220KN_{2}O + N_{2}({220}^{\circ} K ) values are compared to best-fit calculated values given in an earlier study by Toth.1Toth.^{1} R. A. Toth, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 40, 605-615 (1971)

    Applying Business Intelligence tools for the Financial and Property Analysis of Municipalities

    No full text
    This master thesis deals with the software support of one Financial and Property Analysis of Municipalities (FAMA). The co-author of this method is Doctor Petr Toth from the Institute of Public Administration and Regional Development at University of Economics in Prague. The method is supported by Microsoft Access database application and two C++ applications ArisDestiller and Prognoza at present time. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the present software support of Financial and Property Analysis and implement an alternative solution based on Business Intelligence tools. Chosen part of analysis is implemented in the pilot project using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 environment. The thesis focuses mainly on using integration tools for XML data. The contribution of the thesis is to implement data warehouse, which uses the municipalities'annual bills in XML format from the database of Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic. The Financial and Property Analysis method and the current software support are discussed in the first half of this thesis. The other half of the work is dedicated to the Business Intelligence pilot project. Both means of software support are reviewed and compared from various perspectives in the conclusion

    Reprise the Revolution: The Cultural Politics of the 50th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising

    No full text
    This paper argues that during the protests and riots of October 23, 2006, Hungarian groups previously excluded from the social and political public sphere used certain sites of memory in order to reassert their own readings of 1956, the messages it communicates to the present, and the visions it conjurs up for the future. This study analyzes their actions as "commemoration by re-enactment," and while condemning the violence they generated, Ithe author argueds that the mental and physical spaces should be kept accessible for further appropriations and constructions of the present through the past
