    A three page letter written by Corporal Talmage W. Gerrald to his mother while he was serving with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. Talmage Gerrald attended the Furman Fitting School in Greenville from 1912 to 1914, and later joined the military in 1917. The letter is dated May 10, 1918. On May 29, 1918, Talmage Gerrald was killed in action in Cantigny, France. He was cited in General Order No. 29, dated June 22, 1918, for "conspicuous gallantry in action during the operations connected with the capture and defense of Cantigny, May 27-31, 1918." In the the Order it is reported that "without regard to personal danger [Gerrald] assisted in carrying a wounded man to a first aid station through heavy shell fire during which action, he, himself, was killed.
