Holmes Rolston III: interview by Theo Horesh
Rolston on how we might more wisely approach the "perfect moral storm" of climate change. Ethicists will watch the worldview, the interpretation, the value choices underlying economic analyses. We are at a hinge point in human and Earth history. We have enormous amounts of power but have not learned to control our appetites. How do we value the extinctions of species we are causing? How do we value diversity on our wonderland planet? What are the dangers of entering an Anthropocene Epoch? We can think of Earth as a promised land, a gift. Rolston has seen radical changes in human attitudes and behaviors in his lifetime. He challenges the millennial generation to press for more caring for Earth.Theo Horesh interviewed Holmes Rolston III in 2013
Effective equidistribution of lattice points in positive characteristic
Given a place ω of a global function field K over a finite field, with associated affine function ring Rω and completion Kω , the aim of this paper is to give an effective joint equidistribution result for renormalized primitive lattice points (a,b)∈Rω2 in the plane Kω2 , and for renormalized solutions to the gcd equation ax+by=1 . The main tools are techniques of Goronik and Nevo for counting lattice points in well-rounded families of subsets. This gives a sharper analog in positive characteristic of a result of Nevo and the first author for the equidistribution of the primitive lattice points in \ZZ2

-adic Directions of Primitive Vectors
International audienceLinnik type problems concern the distribution of projections of integral points on the unit sphere as their norm increases, and different generalizations of this phenomenon. Our work addresses a question of this type: we prove the uniform distribution of the projections of primitive points in the -adic unit sphere, as their (real) norm tends to infinity. The proof is via counting lattice points in semi-simple -arithmetic groups
Equidistribution of primitive lattices in ℝn
We count primitive lattices of rank d inside Zn as their covolume tends to infinity, with respect to certain parameters of such lattices. These parameters include, for example, the subspace that a lattice spans, namely its projection to the Grassmannian; its homothety class and its equivalence class modulo rescaling and rotation, often referred to as a shape. We add to a prior work of Schmidt by allowing sets in the spaces of parameters that are general enough to conclude the joint equidistribution of these parameters. In addition to the primitive d-lattices Λ themselves, we also consider their orthogonal complements in Zn, A1, and show that the equidistribution occurs jointly for Λ and A1. Finally, our asymptotic formulas for the number of primitive lattices include an explicit bound on the error term
Horospherical coordinates of lattice points in hyperbolic spaces: Effective counting and equidistribution
We establish effective counting results for lattice points in families of domains in real, complex and quaternionic hyperbolic spaces of any dimension. The domains we focus on are defined as product sets with respect to an Iwasawa decomposition. Several natural diophantine problems can be reduced to counting lattice points in such domains. These include equidistribution of the ratio of the length of the shortest solution (x,y) to the gcd equation bx−ay=1 relative to the length of (a,b), where (a,b) ranges over primitive vectors in a disc whose radius increases, the natural analog of this problem in imaginary quadratic number fields, as well as equidistribution of integral solutions to the diophantine equation defined by an integral Lorentz form in three or more variables. We establish an effective rate of convergence for these equidistribution problems, depending on the size of the spectral gap associated with a suitable lattice subgroup in the isometry group of the relevant hyperbolic space. The main result underlying our discussion amounts to establishing effective joint equidistribution for the horospherical component and the radial component in the Iwasawa decomposition of lattice elements

Music Therapy, Regression and Symbolic Distance in Substance Abusers and Their Preferred Music
The author explores the relationship between recovering substance abusers and music. Music can play a significant part in the self-destructive, obsessive behavior of addicts, contributing to a loss of control over emotions. In therapy, music changes from being a means to becoming the goal. Emotions, memories, and life stories evoked by music are validated and contained. The stories of two addicts are related. They both speak about a regressive experience while listening to music, during which boundaries between themselves and their music are erased. Rehabilitating music-listening habits of addicts can help them to incorporate music into their lives as a source of enjoyment and enrichment
The role of civil society organizations in social assistance policy in Brazil: tensions and dilemmas in the provision of services
This Dissertation aims to discuss tensions and dilemmas in the provision of social assistance services by non-state actors, approaching the dynamics among state and civil society organizations (CSOs) in the field of social assistance in Brazil, especially concerning the current political context (from the 2000s) - which is defined by the performance of the Unified Social Assistance System (USAS). To this end, changes in the role of CSOs in the field of social assistance in Brazil are analysed, while effects of major events and regulatory frameworks are identified. Accordingly, the meaning and the implementation process of the USAS is discussed with regard to the state-CSOs relationship. Furthermore, the aim of this investigation was to identify the various conceptions of the current role of CSOs in social assistance policies. Among the main trends and results described, a significant participation of CSOs (in partnership with the government) in providing USAS services is prominent, besides a very heterogeneous reality in the country. A process of change in the hegemonic conceptions of private participation in the provision of USAS services throughout the system implementation was highlighted, mainly a growing recognition, legitimacy and, above all, regulation of its activities in the logics of national policy. In spite of the intense effort for regulating CSOs social assistance actions, it was observed that the way that the USAS directions are implemented by them is not uniform and may involve different dynamics that vary significantly corresponding to their organizational profiles, their power resources as well as their territorial and local institutional context
