A Narrow Escape from the Tajik Pamir

    No full text
This essay documents surviving attempted murder and gunshot wounds incurred during 1992 geographical f ieldwork in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. Our project goal was to assess the potential for a Pamir National Park in this Central Asian terra incognita where the southernmost Soviet Union met the unruly frontier with Afghanistan and China. Our personnel included geographers and government officials from the Soviet Academy of Sciences, Tajik Academy of Sciences, Goscomproda (Tajik Ministry of Environment), and the NGO Tajik Socio-Ecological Union. The initial 1991 field season involved living in Moscow through the coup attempt that ultimately disbanded the Soviet Union. While the ensuing Tajik independence granted us unfettered access to long-forbidden terrain in the Pamir Mountains, the freedom from Moscow also launched Tajikistan’s clan-based civil war. This led to a violent assault in the Western Pamir that sent one bullet through my shoulder blade and another into my hip socket. Following a night of extreme physical and mental suffering, the actions of heroic mountain farmers, a geologist colleague, and a surgeon saved my life. The Postscript presents lessons learned that apply to field work everywhere

NMR and DFT studies of the aggregation behavior of dicationic dialkyl DABCO bistriflimide salts in solution

In this study, various derivatives of 1,4-dialkyl-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-diium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salts, [Cn.DABCO.Cn][Tf2N]2, with different alkyl groups, were synthesized and characterized by their melting points and NMR spectra. Moreover, various solutions of [C4.DABCO.C4][Tf2N]2 and [C8.DABCO.C8][Tf2N]2 salts in deuterated methanol and acetone in different concentrations were prepared. The effect of solvent polarity, concentration and charge density of the cation on the aggregation behavior of these salts were investigated using ESI-mass spectrometry, 1HNMR, DOSY NMR experiments and DFT calculations. The obtained results showed that in methanol, a protic and very polar solvent, the chemical shift of DABCO protons and the diffusion coefficient of the cation are almost independent of the concentration, except for relatively high concentrations. Thus, in this solvent and in the low concentration regime, aggregation is not favored and in high concentration small aggregates can be formed. In contrast, when dissolved in acetone, a less polar solvent, aggregates formation is favored. As a result, chemical shift of DABCO protons and diffusion coefficient of the cation in acetone are more strongly dependent on the concentration

Phenomenon of Synonymy of Verbal Idioms Denoting Feelings In Russian, Tajik, And English Languages

    No full text
The importance of synonymy phenomenon is emphasized by its study based on practical examples used in speech and literature; it lets us to divide verbal idioms denoting feelings in Russian, English, and Tajik languages into three groups: verbal idioms denoting positive feelings, verbal idioms denoting negative feelings, and verbal idioms denoting state

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Do Texas Angora bucks improve mohair weight and quality traits of Tajik Angora goats?

    No full text
With the main objective of improving Tajik mohair quantity and quality, frozen semen from eight top performance tested Texan Angora bucks was imported and used on 459 selected local goats from 11 farmers in two insemination seasons. Conception rates in both seasons were very low. Sixty six Texan x Tajik crossbred progeny were compared with 308 contemporary Tajik controls. Early live body weights, mohair quantity and mohair quality data were collected and genotypes compared after correcting for season, farm and sex of progeny, fitting age as a co-variable. Body weights at birth were higher in crossbreds (2.39 vs. 2.19 kg, P < 0.001) but body weights at 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months were similar. Fleece weights at first shearing were much higher in crossbreds (1.16 vs. 0.68 kg, P < 0.001) as well as staple length (19.6 vs. 16.3 cm, P < 0.001). Fibre diameter at first shearing tended to be lower in crossbreds (24.2 vs. 25.9 m, P = 0.088) and was lower at second shearing (29.2 vs. 31.5 m, P < 0.05). Med fibre percentage (proportion of fibres with a medulla less than 60% of its diameter) was lower in crossbreds at first (1.70 vs. 4.12%, P < 0.05) and second shearing (1.86 vs. 3.01%, P < 0.05). Kemp fibre percentages (proportion of fibres with a medulla equal or larger than 60% of its diameter) were very low and not significantly different between genotypes. There was no difference in visual assessment of fibre fineness but the proportion of progeny classed as superior for overall quality was much higher in crossbreds (39/52 vs. 99/290, P < 0001). It was suggested to monitor later life performance of crossbreds and it is concluded that the introduction of Texan Angora bucks improved Tajik goats. Further improvement may be based on cooperative breeding of Texan progeny and outstanding local goats on one site and distribution to multipliers in different communities

Cardiac myxoma often simulates multisystem disease and initially defies diagnosis. In this paper, we present three cases of cardiac myxoma in adults. Their clinical features and differential diagnosis will be reviewed, with special emphasis on their insidiousness and suspicion necessary for correct and prompt diagnosis. The role of echocardiography in diagnosis and treatment will be discussed, and finally, the surgical management and prognosis is briefly outlined.peer-reviewe

Also By The Same Author: AKTiveAuthor, a Citation Graph Approach to Name Disambiguation

    No full text
The desire for definitive data and the semantic web drive for inference over heterogeneous data sources requires co-reference resolution to be performed on those data. In particular, name disambiguation is required to allow accurate publication lists, citation counts and impact measures to be determined. This paper describes a graph-based approach to author disambiguation on large-scale citation networks. Using self-citation, co-authorship and document source analyses, AKTiveAuthor clusters papers, achieving precision of 0.997 and recall of 0.818 over a test group of eight surname clusters
