This paper presents data on the chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules and associated sediments collected during the 35th voyage of the R/V "Vityaz" in 1962. The samples were made available to the author by Prof, P. L. Bezrukov. Data on the general distribution of manganese nodules at the bottom of the Indian Ocean were already given by P. L. Bezrukov (1962, 1963). Here the author analyzed the geochemistry of nodules samples from seven stations and four samples from the associated sediments. The analysis separates the outer layer of nodules from their apparent internal core

Phonological Word and Grammatical Word: a cross-linguistic typology

    No full text
'Word' is a cornerstone for the understanding of every language. It is a pronounceable phonological unit. It will also have a meaning, and a grammatical characterization - a morphological structure and a syntactic function. And it will be an entry in a dictionary and an orthographic item. 'Word' has 'psychological reality' for speakers, enabling them to talk about the meaning of a word, its appropriateness for use in a certain social context, and so on. This volume is about 'word' in its many guises. It is a logical progression from our earlier volume Word: A Cross-linguistic Typology, edited by R. M. W. Dixon and Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2002), incorporating new facts, new insights, and new generalizations. The volume starts with a typological introduction summarizing the main issues to do with 'word', with special focus on phonological and grammatical word and on their interactions. It is followed by revised versions of papers presented at the International Workshop "'Word": its manifestations and functions' organized by the editors and held at the Language and Culture Research Centre, James Cook University, 3-4 October 2018. An earlier version of Chapter 1 was circulated to the contributors, with a list of issues to be addressed, so as to ensure that the studies of individual languages within this volume were cast in terms of a common set of parameters. This is the tenth monograph in the series Explorations in Linguistic Typology, devoted to volumes from International Workshops organized by the Language and Culture Research Centre and its predecessors. The Workshop and subsequent discussions between the editors and the authors were intellectually stimulating, with cross-fertilization of ideas and scholarly debate. Each author has undertaken intensive fieldwork and has firsthand in-depth knowledge of their languages, in addition to experience of working on linguistic typology, historical and comparative linguistics, and language contact and areal diffusion. The analysis is uniformly cast in terms of basic linguistic theory-the cumulative typological framework which provides the foundation for sound empirically-based descriptive and analytic works. We avoid formalisms (which provide restatements rather than explanations, and come and go with such frequency that any statement made in terms of them is likely to soon become inaccessible)

S.; Östlin, Göran; Ravindranath, Swara; Schaerer, Daniel; Thuan, Trinh X.; Xu, XinfengUnderstanding the mechanisms driving the escape of ionizing or Lyman continuum (LyC) emission from the interstellar medium of galaxies is necessary to constrain the evolution of reionization and the sources responsible for it. While progress has been made in identifying the global galaxy properties linked to the ionizing escape fraction fescLyC , little is currently known about how spatially resolved galaxy properties impact it. We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging data obtained in the Lyα and Continuum Origins Survey (LaCOS). LaCOS consists of HST imaging covering rest-frame optical and UV bands for a subsample of 42 galaxies in the Low redshift Lyman Continuum Survey, including 22 LyC emitters ( fescLyC=0.01-0.49 ). Here, we describe the sample, observations, and data reduction, and investigate connections between global and sub-kiloparsec Lyα emission and fescLyC . We confirm the correlation between fescLyC and EWLyα, and the anticorrelation with r50, when using values obtained via global photometry. We also find correlations previously found with spectroscopy with global photometric LLyα, fescLyα , ΣSFR, and fescLyC , but with a smaller degree of correlations ( ∣Δτ∣¯∼0.1 ). We find correlations are strongest between Lyα observables (LLyα, EWLyα) and fescLyC when measured in a small aperture around the brightest UV source in each galaxy. We interpret these results as evidence that LyC photons escaping on the line of sight are contributed by a small number of UV-bright compact regions in most galaxies in LaCOS. © 2025. Nikolai Evreinov and Edith Craig as Mediums of Modernist Sensibility

    No full text
Nikolai Evreinov (1870-1953) was a Russian playwright, director, and theorist of the theatre who played a leading part in the modernist movement of Russian theatre. Evreinov's 1911 monodrama The Theatre of the Soul (V kulisakh dushi) was staged by the Crooked Mirror theatre in St Petersburg in 1912. It was also performed in London (1915) and Rome (1929), and inspired Man Ray to create his aerograph The Theatre of the Soul (1917). In this article Alexandra Smith links Evreinov's play to Russian modernist thought shaped by the atmosphere of crisis associated with the Russo-Japanese War and the first Russian Revolution. It demonstrates that Edith Craig's production of Evreinov's play suggests that the philosophy of theatricalization of everyday life might enable modern subjects to overcome the fragmentation of modern society. Craig's use of the montage-like techniques of Evreinov's play prefigures cinematographic experiments of the 1920s and Marinetti's notion of synthetic theatre. Alexandra Smith is a Reader in Russian Studies at the University of Edinburgh and is the author of The Song of the Mockingbird: Pushkin in the Works of Marina Tsvetaeva (1994) and Montaging Pushkin: Pushkin and Visions of Modernity in Russian Twentieth-Century Poetry (2006), as well as numerous articles on Russian literature and culture.</p

Will climate change alter Arctic nitrogen budgets? Impacts of warming and fertilization on nitrogen fixing microbial communities at Alexandra Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut.

    No full text
The impacts of simulated climate change (warming and fertilization treatments) on diazotroph community structure and activity were investigated at Alexandra Fiord, Ellesmere Island, Canada. Open Top Chambers were randomly placed in a dwarf-shrub, cushion-plant dominated mesic tundra site in 1995. In 2000 and 2001 20N: 20P2O5: 20K2O fertilizer was applied at a rate of 5 g m-2year-1. Estimates of nitrogen fixation rates were made in the field by Acetylene Reduction Assays (ARA). Higher rates of N-fixation were observed 19-35 days post-fertilization but were otherwise unaffected by treatments and we hypothesize that microsite variation was a greater determinant of N-fixation rate than were the treatments applied. 'Nif'H genes were amplified from bulk soil DNA and analyzed by Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis. Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMS) was used to ordinate treatment plots in 'nif'H genotype space. 'Nif'H gene communities were more strongly structured by warming treatment late in the growing season, suggesting that an annual succession in diazotroph community composition occurs. [delta]15N analysis of plant and soil material from each treatment plot suggests that evergreen dwarf shrubs will depend more heavily on organic-N derived from mycorrhizae in warmer climates and that relative importance of symbiotic nitrogen fixation to the N-nutrition of 'D. integrifolia' will decline at this site. The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b127010

COMBINING DESIGN AND AUTOETHNOGRAPHY TO IMPROVE VISUALLY IMPAIRED PATIENTS´ EXPERIENCE IN HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT: A CASE STUDY FOR AWARENESS THROUGH A PATIENT INNOVATOR PERSPECTIVE

DISCLAIMER This dissertation represents an original scholarly work, developed to fulfill the requirements to complete my master's degree, with all sources duly acknowledged. Some of the content is derived and expanded from the following publication: VII International Conference for Inclusion & I Conference on Assistive Technology and Accessibility Marques, R., Jacinto, M. J., Pernencar, C., & Santiago, E. (2023). From a Patient Innovation Perspective: Design as a Tool to Improve Blind and Visual Impaired People Experience in Hospital Facilities. In S. Joana, V. Luís, & M. Nuno Fragata (Eds.), Livro de Atas da VII Conferência Internacional para a Inclusão & I Conferência de Tecnologias de Apoio e Acessibilidade (pp. 151–158). Politécnico de Leiria | Escola Superior de Educação e Ciências Sociai. https://doi.org/10.25766/6241-9n98A world where almost every sign is given by visual inputs amplifies the profoundly challenging experience endured by visually impaired people. The absence of vision significantly impacts a person's life, as simple daily tasks can become difficult or even impossible to accomplish. Blind and low-vision individuals face numerous barriers, and one of the most challenging obstacles is physical orientation within public spaces, such as schools and hospitals, in an autonomous way. Hospital facilities represent a critical touchpoint when considering wayfinding systems, even for sighted individuals. Supported by the Patient Innovation concept, autoethnography methodologies, and design practices, the author, who is simultaneously a designer, researcher, and patient with low vision, explores how personal experiences can assist other visually impaired patients while educating about disability and promoting inclusion in healthcare and design. This case study for awareness is based on a first-person perspective and aims to address the existing wayfinding elements for visually disabled patients within hospital facilities through an "auto-shadowing" journey – from a hospital's main entrance to the ophthalmology service in Porto (Portugal) – evaluating the ability to reach the ophthalmologist's appointment autonomously. The research findings reveal the absence of an effective navigation system capable of providing accessible tools to blind and low-vision patients. Considering the issues identified, the author proposes discussions and reflections on how design practices should be oriented to prioritize and facilitate societal change. Improving the experience of visually disabled patients is critical to providing better healthcare services and promoting a more equal and accessible world where they can have a more active voice in society. Regardless of their disability, healthcare should be accessible to all citizens
