Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Florianópolis, 2010As inundações situam-se entre os principais tipos de fenômenos associados aos danos socioeconômicos e ambientais. No município de Blumenau, ocorreram 69 inundações com níveis superiores a 8,5 m (nível limite de início de inundação), entre os anos de 1852 e 2008. A intensificação dos reflexos dessas inundações é acompanhada pelo processo de desenvolvimento socioeconômico da região, refletido principalmente pelas características do solo e de utilização dos recursos naturais. Apesar dos investimentos públicos em obras de contenção e dos avanços em sistemas de monitoramento hidrometeorológico e alerta, os danos são recorrentes. Isso mostra a vulnerabilidade do município frente às inundações e ao mesmo tempo, as habilidades dos atingidos de conviverem com os riscos. Este estudo busca, nesse sentido, identificar as formas de percepções e reações que os moradores e comerciantes da área urbana utilizam na minimização dos danos, além das atuações dos órgãos públicos de defesa civil. A análise dos danos está relacionada aos eventos históricos de 1983, 1984, 1992 e 2001. Inicialmente são desenvolvidas duas abordagens de avaliação. A primeira abordagem é uma análise estatística, resultante da aplicação de 387 entrevistas a moradores e comerciantes nas áreas inundáveis, e a segunda abordagem é uma avaliação econômica dos danos. Os resultados das duas abordagens foram utilizados para o desenvolvimento de um modelo de avaliação de danos tangíveis associados às inundações graduais e bruscas no Município de Blumenau, denominado MAVIN. Os resultados calculados pelo modelo foram considerados bons, apesar de apresentarem diferenças significativas para eventos hidrometeorológicos extremos, como é o caso da catástrofe de novembro de 2008. Há que se considerar que cada evento apresenta peculiaridades espaciais e temporais que sempre irão dificultar a melhor performance do MAVIN. A principal conclusão é de que a padronização de um modelo de avaliação dos danos aponta para uma maior segurança na determinação de políticas públicas de prevenção e minimização dos danos.Floods are among the main types of phenomena associated with socioeconomic and environmental damage. In the town of Blumenau country, 69 floods occurred with levels exceeding 8.5 m (maximum level of initiation of flooding), between the years of 1852 and 2008. The increasing reflection of these floods is accompanied by the socioeconomic development process of the region, reflected mainly in the characteristics of the land and the use of natural resources. In spite of public investment in containment and the advancements in hydro-meteorological monitoring alert systems, the damage have been recurring. This shows the vulnerability of the city against floods and at the same time, the skills of those affected to live with the risks. This study seeks, in effect, to identify the types of perceptions and attitudes that residents and businessmen in the urban area use to minimize the damages, in addition to the performances of public institutions of civil defense. The analysis of the damage is related to the historical events of 1983, 1984, 1992 and 2001. Initially two approaches for evaluation are developed. The first approach is a statistical analysis, resulting from the application of 387 interviews with residents and businessmen in the flood areas, and the second approach is an economic assessment of damage. The results of the two approaches were used to develop a model called MAVIN for tangible damage assessment associated with floods and flashfloods in the town of Blumenau. The results calculated by the model were considered good, although they differ significantly for extreme hydrometeorological events, such as the one of November 2008. One must consider that each event presents spatial and temporal peculiarities that will always hinder the best performance of MAVIN. The main conclusion is that the standardization of a model of assessing damage points out to greater certainty in determining public policies to prevention and minimize damage

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
