A microfabricated physical sensor for atmospheric mercury monitoring
Abstract A new microfabricated physical sensor for elemental gaseous mercury (Hg 0 ) determinations has been developed and experimentally tested by the authors. Hg 0 represents 90-99% of atmospheric mercury forms. The sensor is based on the technique of resistivity variation of thin gold film, characterised by high selectivity and absence of optical parts. The sensor consists of four identical thin gold film resistors mounted in Wheatstone bridge configuration. Two resistors work as sensitive elements and the others as reference, in order to minimise the influence of temperature variation. The absorption of Hg 0 on the gold film produces a change in the resistivity of the amalgam. Far from the saturation, this change is proportional to the amount of the absorbed Hg 0 . The adsorption behaviour of the sensor deposited by sputtering on two different substrates (glass and Printed Circuit Board (PCB)) have been investigated. The sensors showed to work in a large range of linearity and need a low power during the regeneration process. Sensors on glass and PCB substrates underwent numerous regeneration cycles without inflicting any mechanical or electrical damages to the resistors. The presented experimental results describe the features of both sensors pointing out advantages and drawbacks of the used substrates. The PCB substrate seems to have more suitable characteristics for developing a new mercury 'smart' sensor
Numerical Analysis of a Nozzle Guided Vane Filled With Lattice Structures
Gas turbines play a critical role in industries such as power generation and aviation. Additive manufacturing has emerged as a game-changing technology for gas turbine components, offering superior design flexibility and performance enhancements. The present work provides an overview of a multistep approach for integrating lattice structures into a specific gas turbine component, the Nozzle Guide Vane (NGV), using additive manufacturing technology. The first step involves a comprehensive assessment of lattice structures’ influence on the mechanical and thermal properties of the exposed part of NGV. Through computational simulations and experiments, an ideal lattice geometry is determined, optimizing structural integrity and heat transfer properties while minimizing volume usage. The second step sets the baseline performances of the current NGV system components, which were investigated and selected for additive manufacturing analysis. The third step focuses on the overall effect of additive manufacturing capabilities in the NGV system. The fourth and final step optimizes the additive manufacturing process for fabricating gas turbine components with lattice structures. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) technology, united with advanced Topological Optimization analyses, and high-temperature alloys were selected to withstand the demanding gas turbine operating conditions. This multistep approach represents a significant step forward in gas turbine technology, capitalizing the advanced mechanical applications as lattice designs and additive manufacturing, aiming in enhanced performance, reduced weight, and improved efficiency. These developments hold the potential to achieve more sustainable and cost-effective energy generation and transportation systems
Os louvores musicais no Renascimento Italiano: comentários e tradução do exórdio ao “prudente leitor” do tratado Il Transilvano – Diálogo sobre a maneira correta de tocar órgão e instrumentos de teclado – de Girolamo Diruta
The translation of humanistic writings about music is a complex task. A deep knowledge of the subject, of the languages involved, and of the works’ historical contexts are just the beginning for one to efficiently recognize the topics that the authors of those works dealt with in their literary writings, and to do “perfect” translations of them. In the Renaissance, the typical thought at the courts associated with the diffusion of the works of Classical Antiquity – seen as formal models and topoi for various productions during the time, especially in the 16th century – articulate a collection of historical, rhetorical and philosophical knowledge – besides musical –, that aimed always at the delight, persuasion and instruction of the “prudent” readers. Girolamo Diruta’s (1554?-1610?) treatise Il Transilvano is a reference in keyboard studies – organ and harpsichord – and an example and model of musical treatises that incorporate to it subjects such as art and rhetoric. This paper aims at introducing the paratext (the exordium) as well as the devices the author used in its writing, and at offering a translation of the exordium into Brazilian Portuguese.A tradução de escritos humanistas de música é uma tarefa complexa. Conhecer com profundidade o assunto tratado, os idiomas relacionados à obra e seu contexto histórico são apenas pontos de partida para o eficiente reconhecimento das tópicas que seus autores visitavam em suas escritas literárias, e consequentemente sua “perfeita” tradução. O pensamento próprio da cortesania e a grande difusão de obras da Antiguidade Clássica – visitadas como modelos de forma e topoi nas mais diversas produções renascentistas, sobretudo no século XVI – articulam nos tratados musicais conhecimentos históricos, retóricos e filosóficos, além dos técnicos e próprios do exercício da arte – tendo sempre como fim o deleite, persuasão e instrução dos “prudentes” leitores. Obra referencial da produção musical para teclados – órgão e cravo, principalmente – o Il Transilvano de Girolamo Diruta (1554?-1610?) é exemplo e modelo da tratadística musical que une assuntos particulares da arte à retórica e de seu legado tópico difundido sob a influência humanista. En partant de quelques réflexions sur la transmission des vers de Girolamo Borgia, cet article pose les bases d’une étude de ses églogues latines. Il propose en particulier une lecture de la pièce en vers qui ouvre les Solatia aetatis calamitosa, un dyptique bucolique dédié à Vittoria Colonna dans lequel l’auteur prête sa voix au maître Giovanni Pontano.This paper aims to begin a study on the manuscript tradition of Girolamo Borgia’s carmina. Focusing in particular on his pastoral poems, we propose an analysis of the first carmen of the Solatia aetatis calamitosae, a bucolic diptych dedicated to Vittoria Colonna, where the author gives voice to his maestro Giovanni Pontano.Partiendo de unas consideraciones sobre la transmisión de los versos de Girolamo Borgia, en el presente ensayo se ponen las bases para un estudio de las églogas latinas del autor. Legislating on Arbitration in Singapore: Linguistic Insights
Arbitration, a cost-effective and expeditious alternative to court litigation, takes place within complex and important national and international legal frameworks where legislation, rules, and conventions provide specialized regimes for the conduct of arbitrations. In recent years, Singapore has given evidence of a significant legislative activity in its fervor to make arbitration quicker and more efficient, and therefore has adopted domestic and international regimes that govern private commercial arbitration: the domestic Arbitration Act 2001 (AA) and the International Arbitration Act 2002 (IAA). While these laws differ from each other in matters of arbitral proceedings, they also reflect the best practice in dispute resolution used in the Asia Pacific Region, where Singapore is a regional and financial centre that serves as a gateway between East and West.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the arbitral regime and practice arising from the Singapore Arbitration Act 2001. The paper will look at the piece of legislative drafting from the perspective of language use in order to gain insights into the rhetorical and discursive features realized in the construction of the genre. First, the paper will outline the nature and topic of a two-ranked arbitral regime (AA – IAA) that is of relevance for the arbitration framework in Singapore. Secondly, the paper will analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the linguistic and textual choices realized in the professional/institutional practice and discourse of the genre, while also identifying those features which seem to constrain the accessibility and interpretation of legislative action performed in the genre. To the extent that Singapore inherited the Western-style legal culture of the English common law tradition, this part of the paper will also assess how the Singapore Arbitration Act borrowed semantic resources from the English Arbitration Act 1996 previously investigated by this author (Tessuto 2003), therefore giving rise to manifestations of “interdiscursivity” (Bhatia 2008, 2010a, 2011) from the discursive process and professional practice of English arbitration. Finally, the paper will draw some conclusions from the analysis of the most salient rhetorical and discursive data in the chosen genre, by adding as yet to our understanding of the intercultural and interdiscursive elements of drafting in the Eastern and Western socio-legal contexts

Girolamo Bartolommei’s literary research is characterised by the narration of actions carried out by sacred and profane subjects and by the narration of ancient fabulae, re-interpreted according to the principle of moral utility. Girolamo Bartolommei dealt with different forms of lyrical, epic, dramaturgical and musical writing, recalling 'the benign readers' of his works to the ethical and social function of poetry. His work Didascalia cioè dottrina comica (“Caption, that is comic doctrine” printed in Florence in 1658 and reprinted in 1661), of which the critical edition is here introduced, is of particular interest for the peculiarity of the theoretical proposal. Such proposal is ascribable to the aesthetic of the academy theatre, aimed at demonstrating to young writers that only the 'honesty' and the decorum of a 'well-ordered comedy' could lift the fate of comic art from the degradation in which it had fallen. The author tries to convey this idea by proceeding from questions of general poetics up to the 'sketches of middle comedies' he composed himself

2020 - 2021Il lavoro indaga la riflessione filosofica proposta dal medico e filosofo Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576) sul tema dei demoni e sottolinea, in particolare, come le considerazioni teoretiche si intreccino con l'esperienza autobiografica dell'autore. La tesi analizza un buon numero di opere cardaniane, la maggior parte delle quali inedite, e fornisce la traduzione italiana (corredata dal testo latino) dei passi esaminati.
