Resumption of ethanol-seeking behaviour in rats.
No full textReexposure to alcohol may induce subjective craving and relapse to drug self-administration in ex-alcoholics. In this study, we proposed a rat model of "first-drink"-induced drug-seeking relapse. Responding was established in Long Evans rats under a fixed-ratio [FR5:S(1)] schedule for oral ethanol. Substitution of water for ethanol solution resulted in extinction of the self-administration. When responding for 8% ethanol and ethanol intake were stable for at least three consecutive 30min sessions, ethanol delivery was discontinued and only three water dipper cup presentations were available upon responding (3[FR5:water]). When the number of active lever presses decreased to a low stable level, responding was considered extinguished. In Experiment 1, subjects under "extinction" were challenged with three 8% ethanol dipper cup presentations. The re-exposure to ethanol was able to significantly reinstate responding in all subjects. Latency to complete the ethanol presentation significantly decreased compared to the value observed during the previous "extinction" session. In Experiment 2, other subjects were tested for extinction and then reexposed to 4, 8 or 16% ethanol. All three concentrations significantly increased active lever presses, but with different patterns of responding. The resumption of responding was linearly correlated to the ethanol concentration but no significant dose-effect relationship was found. In Experiment 3, reexposure to 8% ethanol in nondeprived rats induced a resumption of responding not significantly different from the effect observed in a restricted diet condition. These results demonstrate that ethanol reexposure is able to reinstate ethanol-seeking behaviour in rats with a past history of ethanol self-administration, and that this effect does not depend on a food motivation drive related to the calorific value of ethanol

No full textAutomatic NMR-based protocol for assessment of honey authenticity
Full text link: 1H NMR analysis of organic extracts of honey is a powerful technique to confirm its botanical origin, thanks to the presence of signals that are specific to each floral typology. Similarly, signals from bee metabolites provide an important tool to verify honey entomological origin. Here, we present a method for honey screening that does not require any detailed analysis of the NMR spectrum for the detection and quantification of such markers. Our approach is based on the measurement of two spectral parameters, named entomological factor (EF) and aromatic factor (AF), calculated by integration of well-defined regions of the NMR spectrum. The values of EF and AF can reveal direct or indirect dilution of honey with sugar syrups. This method was tested on honeys of different floral origins and could identify all adulterated samples previously recognized by official techniques. Notably, several samples found compliant by official methods were proven non-genuine by the proposed approach
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
