Immunocompromised tumor-bearing mice show a selective loss of STAT5a/b expression in T and B lymphocytes.
Impaired immune responses are frequently observed in tumor-bearing hosts during progression of tumor growth, but the molecular basis of these functional defects remains unclear. To investigate tumor-induced immunosuppression, we first established that lymphocytes from mice bearing s.c. mammary adenocarcinoma (TS/A) tumors were severely impaired in their ability to generate cellular and humoral Ag-specific responses. Lymphocytes from these mice were then screened for abnormalities in the expression of signal transducing proteins known to be involved in the regulation of cellular immunity. Interestingly, purified T and B cells isolated from immunocompromised tumor-bearing mice displayed a marked decrease in the transcription activators STAT5a and -b at the protein level and to a lesser extent at the mRNA level. By contrast, no change in the expression of STAT1, -3, and -6 or of the TCR itself were detected. The correlation in the loss of T and B cell function with the selective decrease in STAT5a/b expression suggests that regulation of the STAT5 signaling pathway may provide a molecular mechanism for modulating the immune system
Evolution of the particle size distribution of tricalcium silicate during hydration by synchrotron X-ray nano-tomography
The particle size distribution of tricalcium silicate (C3S) is essential for the modelling of early C3S hydration kinetics. In this study, this parameter is analysed during the main hydration period until the first 20 h by synchrotron near-field ptychographic (NF-PXCT) and holographic (HXCT) computed nano-tomography. Additionally, X-ray diffraction, 29Si NMR, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy were used to investigate the system evolution. The time-dependent pore solution composition is also provided to gain further information. HXCT and NF-PXCT show comparable values regarding the evolution of the C3S particle size distribution during hydration, indicating that C3S particles smaller than 1.3 μm are completely dissolved after 20 h of hydration. The results can be reasonably reproduced by numerical models if for all particle sizes a constant reacted rim thickness for each degree of hydration is assumed. Data on the aqueous phase composition are also provided

User behaviour modelling for resource management in a hybrid UMTS/DVB-T network
Third generation mobile networks such as UMTS are designed to enhance the deployment of multimedia services providing high data rates and new flexible communication capabilities. However, these systems are interference limited and as such their performance is lowered in the case of a large number of users generating heavy traffic. A solution to this problem is to interconnect the UMTS network to a Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) network, so that the lack of capacity of UMTS during busy periods can be offset by the high bit rate available on the broadcast network. In order to justify this choice a prediction of the number of subscribers requesting the new multimedia applications designed for this scenario is needed. This paper focuses on the user behaviour modelling for multimedia services in a hybrid UMTS/DVB-T platform. The aim of the paper is to provide operators with a forecast of the demand for new multimedia services showing how they can be subject to a very high number of subscriptions, which UMTS would hardly be able to handle
Thereza Roewer, sp. nov.
Thereza Roewer Emended description. Sexual dimorphism on shape of dorsal scutum absent (unknown in T. murutinga sp. nov.). Maximal width of dorsal scutum reaching middle of area III. Prosoma as wide as opisthosoma (except T. murutinga sp. nov., prosoma much narrower than opisthosoma). Areas II–III divided by a longitudinal median groove (except T. murutinga sp. nov., II undivided and III with incomplete longitudinal median groove). Male spines of area III large. Pedipalpal prolateral subapical seta on femur absent. Leg IV smooth. Coxa IV visible only on apical region (in dorsal view), with tubercle-like apical apophyses. Basitarsus I normal. Distitarsus II four-segmented. Penis: ventral process with basal lateral projections and lance-shaped apex; ventral plate thin or thick, densely or weakly covered with short hairs ventrally; apical setae of ventral plate apically or subapically placed. Emended diagnosis. Thereza roughly resembles Garatiba Mello-Leitão by the longitudinal median groove on areas II (except T. murutinga) and III (complete in Garatiba and Thereza, incomplete in T. murutinga and absent in other caelopyginean genera), dorsal scutum and anal operculum with white patches, weak armature on male leg IV (larger much smaller than segment diameter) and body shape. Composition. Thereza albiornata Roewer, T. amabilis Pinto-da-Rocha, T. murutinga sp. nov., T. poranga Pinto-da-Rocha, and T. speciosa (Roewer). Distribution. Occurs in coastal mountain ranges from the states of Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina.Published as part of Dasilva, Marcio Bernardino & Pinto-Da-Rocha, Ricardo, 2012, Descriptions of Thereza murutinga sp. nov. and Pristocnemis caipira sp. nov., and new records of Caelopyginae (Opiliones: Laniatores: Gonyleptidae), pp. 25-38 in Zootaxa 3317 on pages 27-28, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.28113
SUPERCONDUCTING DIAMAGNETIC FLUCTUATIONS FOR H-II-AB PLANES IN YBA2CU3O7-DELTA FOR FIELD UP TO 5-T
Magnetic measurements for a twin-aligned single crystal of YBa2CU307-delta were performed from 80 K to 200 K for fixed applied fields (H) up to 5T, parallel to the ab planes of the crystal. Magnetic fields, from 0.05 T to 1 T, produced isofield M vs T curves which exhibit sharp transitions that unambiguously identify T(C). Above H = 2 T, a field-enhanced rounding starts to appear in the isofield M vs T curves. This rounding effect in the vicinity of T(C) is interpreted as due to high field-induced fluctuations in the 3D order parameter. By using an appropriate scaling, the DELTAT fluctuation regions for H = 2, 3 T are obtained.901064765
Vicente Risco perante a censura franquista: Leria, O porco de pé e La puerta de paja
The main purpose of this study is to delve into the different difficulties encountered by the volumes Leria (1961) and O porco de pé e outras narracións (1972), by Vicente Risco, in the processing of the necessary authorization before Franco's censorship for their publication. Some of the misadventures of the same kind suffered by the novel in Spanish La puerta de paja (1953), which became a finalist for the renowned Nadal Prize, are also addressed. In this third case, an appropriate criterion is proposed for the restoration of the work, published up to now with amputations ordered by the Ministry of Information and Tourism, on the one hand, or without adjusting to the discourse that the author corroborated, on the other.
Biallellic variants in CACNA1S cause fetal akinesia sequence, progressive hydrops and stillbirth
Fetal arthrogryposis is a well-recognised ultrasonographic phenotype, caused by both genetic, maternal and extrinsic factors. When present with fetal growth restriction, pulmonary hypoplasia and multiple joint contractures, it is often referred to as fetal akinesia deformation sequence (FADS). Historically, elucidating genetic causes of arthryogryposis/FADS has been challenging; there are now more than 150 genes known to cause arthrogryposis through myopathic, neuromuscular and metabolic pathways affecting fetal movement. FADS is associated with over 400 medical conditions making prenatal diagnosis challenging. Here we present a case of FADS diagnosed at 19 weeks gestation with progression to severe fetal hydrops and stillbirth at 26-weeks gestation. Initial investigations including combined first trimester screening, TORCH (infection) screen and chromosomal microarray were normal. Trio whole exome sequencing (WES) detected compound heterozygous likely pathogenic CACNA1S gene variants associated with autosomal dominant (AD) and autosomal recessive (AR) congenital myopathy and FADS. To our knowledge, this is the first prenatal diagnosis of this condition. No Full Tex
