    The purpose of the study is to investigate and evaluate the most common misunderstandings that are associated with the subject of Machine Learning, and then to make a direct comparison between the findings of the study and the Machine Learning course that is currently being provided by the Delft University of Technology as part of their Bachelor's degree program. In order to do this, the study uses literature analysis, together with interviews conducted with teachers and students of the course in question.     Simulation of neutron radiation effects in silicon avalanche photodiodes

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.A new one-dimensional device simulation package developed for the simulation of neutron radiatiol! effects in silicon avalanche photodiodes is described. The software uses a finite difference technique to solve the time-independent semiconductor equations across a user specified structure. Impact ionisation and illumination are included, allowing accurate simulation with minimal assumptions about the device under investigation. The effect of neutron radiation damage is incorporated via the introduction of deep acceptor levels subject to Shockley-Read-Hall statistics. Two models are presented. A reverse reach through model, based on the EG&G C30626E reverse reach through avalanche photo diode originally proposed for use in the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter, and a reach through model, based on widely available commerical devices. A short experimental study on two commercial silicon avalanche photodiodes, a C30719F reverse reach through APD and a C30916E reach through APD, is presented for comparison with the simulation data. To allow full comparison with the simulated predictions, the commercial devices were irradiated at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory's ISIS facility. The simulated data shows good qualitative agreement with the measurements performed on the commercial devices, quantitative predictions would require exact information about the doping profile. The characteristic behaviour of the devices is predicted over a wide range of conditions both before and after neutron irradiation. The effect of ionised deep acceptors in the bulk of the devices is investigated. The simulation package provides a useful tool for the analysis of semiconductor devices, particularly in areas where a non-ionising radiation damage is prevelent e.g. high energy physics, and provides a good basis for further development.This study was funded by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC)

    Kernaussage Fragestellung Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist die Nutzenbewertung einer biomarkerbasierten Strategie zur Entscheidung für oder gegen eine adjuvante systemische Chemotherapie im Vergleich zu einer biomarkerunabhängigen Entscheidungsstrategie oder einer zweiten biomarkerbasierten Entscheidungsstrategie jeweils bei Patientinnen mit primärem Hormonrezeptor-positivem, HER2/neu-negativem Mammakarzinom und 0 bis 3 befallenen Lymphknoten hinsichtlich patientenrelevanter Endpunkte. Fazit Für einen Nutzen bzw. Schaden einer biomarkerbasierten Strategie zur Entscheidung für oder gegen eine adjuvante Chemotherapie beim primären Mammakarzinom liegt derzeit kein Anhaltspunkt vor. Die Daten von 6 der 8 eingeschlossenen Studien konnten aufgrund des hohen Anteils von in der Analyse nicht berücksichtigten Patientinnen nicht für die vorliegende Nutzenbewertung verwendet werden. Verwertbar waren somit nur die Daten von 2 RCT. Die RCT Martin 2014 (10 Jahre Beobachtungszeit) untersuchte die Interaktion zwischen Biomarker und Art des angewandten Chemotherapieregimes und konnte keinen Nutzen des EndoPredict-Tests für die Auswahl zwischen 2 Chemotherapien zeigen. In der noch laufenden RCT MINDACT werden die Gabe bzw. das Unterlassen einer Chemotherapie bei Patientinnen untersucht, bei denen sich aus klinisch-pathologischer Bewertung und Biomarker unterschiedliche Empfehlungen ergaben (diskordante Ergebnisse). Die 5-Jahres-Zwischenergebnisse deuten nicht auf einen Nutzen einer biomarkerbasierten Therapieentscheidung mithilfe des MammaPrint-Tests hin

    Pattern coarsening in a 2D hexagonal system

    We have studied the ordering dynamics of a two-dimensional system which consists of a single layer of spherical block copolymer microdomains in a thin film. We follow the annealing process after a quench from the disordered state by electron microscopy and time-lapse atomic force microscopy. At late times the orientational correlation length ξ 6 of the microdomain lattice exhibits a t 1/4 temporal power law. We compare the time evolution of the densities of dislocations, disclinations and the dislocation orientational correlation function. While most disclinations condense into dislocations and most dislocations condense into "grain boundaries", the dynamics appear to involve the interplay of disclinations and lines of dislocations. Rather than isolated grains shrinking, the most frequently observed process is the collapse of a smaller grain which resides on the boundary of two larger grains.Fil: Harrison, C..     Bubble Formation in Yield Stress Fluids Using Flow-Focusing and T-Junction Devices

    International audienceWe study the production of bubbles inside yield stress fluids (YSFs) in axisymmetric T-junction and flow-focusing devices. Taking advantage of yield stress over capillary stress, we exhibit a robust break-up mechanism reminiscent of the geometrical operating regime in 2D flow-focusing devices for Newtonian fluids. We report that when the gas is pressure driven, the dynamics is unsteady due to hydrodynamic feedback and YSF deposition on the walls of the channels.
