Achieving high strain rate superplasticity in Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys after severe plastic deformation

No full text
The application of severe plastic deformation to metallic alloys via the procedure of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) leads to significant grain refinement and an opportunity for achieving superplastic deformability at very high strain rates (10–2 s–1). The development of high-strain-rate superplastic alloys is important because it provides the possibility for making use of superplastic forming for the rapid fabrication of complex components. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of a series of Al–Mg– Sc–Zr alloys after ECAP. The results demonstrate that some of these alloys exhibit exceptionally high tensile ductilities (elongations up to > 2000%) at very rapid strain rates.<br/

V.I. Vernadsky and the noosphere concept: Russian understandings of society-nature interaction

No full text
Recent Russian legislative and policy documentation concerning national progress towards sustainable development has suggested that the attainment of such a state would represent the first stage in the development of the noosphere as outlined by the Russian scientist Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky (1863–1945). This paper explores Vernadsky’s model of evolutionary change through a focus on his work on the biosphere and noosphere in an attempt to further understanding of the way in which Russia is approaching the concept of sustainable development in the contemporary period. It is argued that the official Russian interpretation of the noosphere idea tends to obscure the evolutionary and materialist foundations of Vernadsky’s biosphere–noosphere conceptualisation. At the same time, the concluding section of the paper suggests that the scope of Vernadsky’s work can be used to stimulate the search for a more coherent approach to work in areas of sustainable development and sustainability across the span of the social and physical sciences

V.I. Chernyshev as Researcher of Russian Punctuation

No full text
A generalization of the experience of research by Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences V.I. Chernyshev (1867-1949) on Russian punctuation is presented. The polemic of V.I. Chernyshev with contemporary scientists A.M. Peshkovsky and G.O. Vinokur on the problems of punctuation is considered. The role of V.I. Chernyshev in the development of punctuation theory in Russian linguistics is shown. The relevance of the study lies in the fact that V.I. Chernyshev’s punctuation concept, which is the first experience of a functional approach to punctuation, is fully described. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that the analysis of segregation as a punctuation phenomenon is assessed. We found textual explanations for those uses of punctuation marks that are significant for the author’s style. The textual understanding of punctuation is revealed, the main principle in teaching punctuation is discussed. According to V.I. Chernyshev, the choice of a punctuation mark is based on semantics, correlated with the tradition of expressing a certain meaning by means of punctuation in the book language and with the aesthetic task of the author. V.I. Chernyshev’s ideas about the interaction of the author’s stylistics and textual criticism in the work of the editor on the punctuation of the artist of the word are described. Special attention is paid to individual examples of V.I. Chernyshev’s analysis of the use of punctuation marks in the works of A.S. Pushkin

AbstractThis paper is a continuation of the survey by the author (V.I. Trofimov, On the action of a group on a graph, Acta Appl. Math. 29 (1992) 161–170) on some results concerning groups of automorphisms of locally finite vertex-symmetric graphs

Social and legal regulators. Conceptual developments by V.I. Nizhechek

The role of the Soviet scientist-activist V.I. Nizhechek in the development and establishment of social regulation concepts, and its importance in governing societal affairs, as well as functions and potential of law, and its relationship with morality as a social regulator are thoroughtly explored. V.I. Nizhechek posits that legal and social regulations share a common nature, are deeply interconnected, and exhibit numerous practical manifestations of unity. While aknowledging the independent nature of law, the scientist concludes that legal norms essentially form a component of social regulation in society. Notably, the author emphasizes moral regulation, and the interplay between legal norms and morality, while examining various social regulators such as corporate norms, ethincs, religion, and others. V.I. Nizhechek does not differential between morality ad ethics; however, he asserts that morality holds a dominant role in the system of social regulation, highlighting the so-called “proximity” of morality and law. Morever, the author draws relevant parallels that substantiate the systematic nature of social regulation. V.I. Nizhechek delves into the crucial question of the theory of law as a tool of legal regulation in historical and contemporary contexts. He considers the evolution of legal regulation in terms of broadening its scope and reinforcing its role in Soviet society, unlimately concluding that legal regulation has become more complex. The concept of the intimate connection between economic and legal methods of regulation is presented; the author asserts that there may be no contradiction between these methods of regulation since all economic methods are mediated by legal norms. The material is prefaced by the author's personal recollections of meetings and conversations with V.I. Nizhechek, as well as with scholars, colleagues, who were associated with him
