Inhibitory potential of combination of macrolide antibiotic with conventional chemotherapeutic agent sorafenib on growth rate of cancer cell population
Over the past few years great progress has been achieved in anticancer therapy, but development
of resistance and unavoidable side effects have incapacitated these fulfilments. Keeping in view
this demanding condition, numerous drugs with unique antitumor mechanisms are under
investigations including antimicrobials which have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory,
immunomodulatory and cytotoxic effects. In this regard, both conventional and novel antimicrobials
are being studied to explore their anticancer potential along with underlying mechanisms which
may render them as effective anticancer drugs in near future. Moreover, the new approach of drug
repurposing is also being encouraged especially in cancers in order to reduce cost and limit adverse effects. In recent times a cumulative number of studies have laid stress upon the antitumor
properties of antimicrobials. Consequently, this study has been conducted to see comparative
inhibitory effect of Sorafenib and its combination with a macrolide antibiotic Azithromycin on growth

Triangulated Narrative Patterns in Richard Wright’s Native Son and The Outsider: Naturalism, Existentialism, and Ideology
Naturalism and existentialism are two modes of representation that many twentieth-century American and European writers used. But whereas some novelists used each mode independently, others, such as the African-American writer Richard Wright, mixed both modes in the single novel for ideological reasons, thus making the novel’s narrative structure more dynamic. This paper explores both the naturalistic and existential modes of representation in two novels by Richard Wright, namely, Native Son and The Outsider. An analysis of these two novels together highlights the relationship between the author’s ideology and his narrative technique with greater clarity than if either novel were studied separately. The paper explains that the narrative pattern in both novels is inconsistent due to the author’s shift from one mode to the other. Wright starts both novels in the mode of naturalism, moves then to the mode of existentialism, and, finally, ends both novels in the mode of naturalism. The paper relates Wright’s shift to the mode of existentialism to the ideology and personality of the author himself. Richard Wright suffered from humiliation and slavery in the dominant society of white America and came to reflect on the oppression and poverty he suffered in both of his novels by using the naturalistic mode of representation. Thomas Bigger in Native Son and Damon Cross in The Outsider are represented at the outset as weak and controlled by social and economic forces which they can neither control nor understand. However, the author shifts toward the middle of each novel to the existential mode to portray his oppressed heroes—Thomas Bigger and Damon Cross—as powerful and violent figures who rebel against the moral values of the white American society. But Wright turns back again to the naturalistic mode of representation toward the ends of both novels rendering both characters as weak, especially when he describes their failure in their quest to find a meaning for their lives, a matter which suggests Wright’s frustrations regarding the realities of the experience of the African-American individual in the American society
Paired values of the serum fructosamine and blood glucose for screening of gestational diabetes mellitus : a retrospective study of 165 Saudi pregnant women
This study reports the utilization of serum fructosamine and blood glucose for the screening of gestational
diabetes mellitus (GDM). Blood samples from 165 pregnant women were analyzed for fasting blood glucose
(FBG), random blood glucose (RBG) and serum fructosamine. The actual fructosamine levels were corrected
for serum protein (c-Fruct) for more precise presentation. Two cut-off values of FBG (>5.3 mmol/L and >7.0
mmol/L) and RBG (>7.8 mmol/L and >11.0 mmol/L) were used to classify hyperglycemic subjects for subsequent
evaluation. The average values ± standard deviations for FBG, RBG and cFruct were 5.865 ± 1.95, 7.767 ±
3.21 and 2.387 ± 0.47 mmol/L, respectively. FBG levels were significantly correlated with RBG (Pearson
correlation = 0.597, P<0.001). Significant correlations were also observed between cFruct and FBG (Pearson
correlation = 0.673, P<0.001) or RBG (Pearson correlation = 0.641, P<0.001). Out of 165 subjects, 24 (14.5%)
cases were classified as hyperglycemic on the basis of FBG >7.0 mmol/L or RBG >11.0 mmol/L; use of lower
cut-off values resulted higher frequencies of hyperglycemia. Whereas, a combined criteria of FBG >5.3 mmol/
L and cFruct >2.5 mmol/L predicted 35 patients as the most probable hyperglycemic as compared to 32
patients identified using the criteria of RBG >7.8 mmol/L and cFruct >2.5 mmol/L. These criteria were associated
with 4.8% and 3.6% false-positivity at the expense of 3.6% and 3.0% false-negative outcomes, respectively.
The levels of FBG, RBG and cFruct were significantly higher in hyperglycemic groups (irrespective of grouping
criteria) as compared to the respective normal groups. In conclusion, these findings clearly indicate that the
paired values of cFruct with FBG or RBG could help in filtering high-risk individuals for OGTT and therefore
avoiding a unnecessary OGTTCorresponding Author:

Detecting Frames and Causal Relationships in Climate Change Related Text Databases Based on Semantic Features
abstract: The subliminal impact of framing of social, political and environmental issues such as climate change has been studied for decades in political science and communications research. Media framing offers an “interpretative package" for average citizens on how to make sense of climate change and its consequences to their livelihoods, how to deal with its negative impacts, and which mitigation or adaptation policies to support. A line of related work has used bag of words and word-level features to detect frames automatically in text. Such works face limitations since standard keyword based features may not generalize well to accommodate surface variations in text when different keywords are used for similar concepts.
This thesis develops a unique type of textual features that generalize triplets extracted from text, by clustering them into high-level concepts. These concepts are utilized as features to detect frames in text. Compared to uni-gram and bi-gram based models, classification and clustering using generalized concepts yield better discriminating features and a higher classification accuracy with a 12% boost (i.e. from 74% to 83% F-measure) and 0.91 clustering purity for Frame/Non-Frame detection.
The automatic discovery of complex causal chains among interlinked events and their participating actors has not yet been thoroughly studied. Previous studies related to extracting causal relationships from text were based on laborious and incomplete hand-developed lists of explicit causal verbs, such as “causes" and “results in." Such approaches result in limited recall because standard causal verbs may not generalize well to accommodate surface variations in texts when different keywords and phrases are used to express similar causal effects. Therefore, I present a system that utilizes generalized concepts to extract causal relationships. The proposed algorithms overcome surface variations in written expressions of causal relationships and discover the domino effects between climate events and human security. This semi-supervised approach alleviates the need for labor intensive keyword list development and annotated datasets. Experimental evaluations by domain experts achieve an average precision of 82%. Qualitative assessments of causal chains show that results are consistent with the 2014 IPCC report illuminating causal mechanisms underlying the linkages between climatic stresses and social instability.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Computer Science 201
Serological Analysis of Pulmonary and Extra Pulmonary Tuberculosis With Elisa for Anti A60 IgA
Background: Demonstration and evaluation of antituberculous IgA antibodies for rapid diagnosis of bothpulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis.Method: ELISA assay based on mycobacterial antigenA60 (Anda Biologicals, France) was used on the seraobtained from 69 cases of tuberculosis and 136 controls inthe population of Karachi, Pakistan.Result: Of 136 controls only 7.3% were positive for IgA.A very good serological response was observed in caseswith sputum positive active pulmonary tuberculosis, depicting a positivity of 83.3% for IgA antibodies.Relatively low sero positivity was seen in cases of sputumnegative active pulmonary tuberculosis compared to thoseof sputum active pulmonary tuberculosis. A low positivityof 26.3% for IgA was observed in cases of extra pulmonarytuberculosis. In cases of healed tuberculosis 25% werefound positive for IgA. Considering all the cases of activetuberculosis and the controls the global sensitivity of58.4% and specificity of 92.7% were obtained when IgAantibodies were taken into account. Conclusion: The estimation of anti tuberculosisantibody IgA against A60 for the rapid diagnosis is clearlydemonstrated and therefore recommende
