The study is to explore the use of CD-ROM in secondary schools among English teachers. In addition, to determine difference between five independent variables such as gender, years of teaching, type of school, highest academic and computer ownership. It is also to highlight constraints faced by these teachers in using CD-ROM in classrooms. Apart of that, this research is to know the teachers level of computer literacy and perception in using CD-ROM in classrooms. This research is a non-experimental research using survey, which has various types of questions such as open-ended questions, and Likert Scale. The method employed in analyzing this research is descriptive statistics and cross tabulation between the five independent variables. Findings indicated that there are no significant rate differences between male and female in not using CD-ROMs a period per week. Although, female teachers use CD-ROMs more compared to male for three to six periods a week. Moreover, teachers teaching more than 20 years scored more in not using CD-ROMs a period per week. Teachers from the first and second category, which is about one to ten years, tend to use CD-ROMs about three to six periods per week. Different types of schools such as daily, religious, residential and Chinese medium showed no significant difference. Lastly, computer ownership is also not a significant factor in determining teachers to use CD-ROMs at least once a week. Teachers do face many technical constraints, for example, difficult to get keys, insufficient laptops or CD-ROMs and others. Although the usage level of CD-ROMs in secondary school is not in its maximum usage, still we could conclude that teachers has a minimum level of computer literacy and occasionally do use the CD-ROMs provided by the Malaysian government. Furthermore, the teachers’ perception on CD-ROMs is at a good level but there are many steps need to be taken to encourage teachers to use these CD-ROMs provided by the government

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ISLAMIC LAWS OF WAR AND IHL – POINTS OF CONVERGENCE FOR UNIVERSAL CONSENSUS ON LAWS OF WAR

    Get PDF
In contemporary times, wars are not taking place in a legal vacuum. There are laws available on resorting to force and conduct of hostilities, including Islamic Laws of war and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). These legal regimes trace their origins in the teaching of elders that have further translated into rules and principles to limit the destructive nature of an armed conflict. Both systems are primarily concerned about regulating the behaviour of belligerents to avoid and at least minimize the sufferings of combatants and non-combatants in the theatre of war. This paper explores Islamic values and rules on the conduct of hostilities and compares them with similar provisions of IHL by using a comparative analysis approach. The objective of this study is not to judge Islamic Laws of war in contrast to IHL or vice versa but addresses the points of convergence. It analyses whether there is any significant difference between these two legal systems in observing principles and ethics of warfare, and provides a way out for humanization.   Bibliography Entry Gardezi, Syed Mahmood Akhter Hussain. 2021. Syed Mahmood and the transformation of Muslim law in British India

The British colonial administration in India transformed Muslim law in the nineteenth century through the three concurrent processes of translation, legislation, and adjudication. Although Indian Muslims were gradually displaced in their traditional position as interpreters of that law in the role of muftis, discerning and applying the shari'ah according to Hanafi principles of fiqh, they nonetheless played a vital role in the transformation of Muslim law. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Muslim participation became more noticeable and significant as they moved into increasingly influential positions in the British judicial administration. Syed Mahmood (1850-1903) was a pioneer in this movement, being one of the first Indian Muslims to study law and become a barrister in England, being the first non-European member of the Allahabad Bar, and being the first Indian Muslim appointed to any High Court in British India. During his tenure as judge of the High Court at Allahabad, he wrote numerous judgments on matters of civil law, including matters which the British regime had determined were to be governed by Muslim law, or rather, by the amalgam of Muslim and English law called "Anglo-Mohammedan law" into which it had been transformed. He understood certain aspects Muslim law, especially criminal law and laws of evidence, to have been abrogated by British law in India, but stoutly resisted the incursion of English law and promoted the acceptance of Muslim law as the customary law in other areas. His critique of the British administration of justice in India and his persistent independence of thought while serving on the High Court brought him into conflict with his fellow judges. He was eventually forced to resign in 1892, but his recorded judgments in the Indian Law Reports continued to provide an authoritative exposition of Muslim law for succeeding generations of jurists. In addition to elucidating the transformation of Muslim la

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
