    No full text
The process of out-migration has significantly been associated with the welfare of the households at origin across the world. The process of migration is mainly initiated from Pakistan with a prime objective to elevate the social position as there are only a few opportunities left for the people to work and earn for livings. The overall size of international migrants from Sindh province is a handful (approximately .9 million) and the majority of these migrants moved to the Gulf region but some also moved to the rest of the world particularly in Europe and the US. The impact of migration can be seen on many aspects of households of migrants but for the current research, it is focused only on female children’s education in the case of Khairpur (Mir’s) district in the province of Sindh, Pakistan. The selection of the respondents was made by using purposive sampling technique. The data was collected from 120 households of migrants who at least had one member living abroad and sending remittances regularly. The focus of the current research was on two major aspects; (a) out-migration and inflow of remittances and (b) educational outcomes of the female children studying at primary school level. It is perceived that migration of father and subsequently the inflow of remittances can make a huge difference for the educational outcomes of female children. In some cases, the inflow of remittances leads toward the improvement in the educational performance of the female children

    No full text
This paper aims at analyzing the traditional processes of conflict resolution in Pukhtoon society. The institution under study is Jirga an essential element of Pukhtunwali. By using Karak district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a case study, this paper explores Maraka a form of Jirga that dispenses justice at a local level on the basis of Pukhtunwali and Shariah. This study found that the current conflict in the region has significant implications for the institution of Maraka in terms of its structure, composition and dispensation of justice. In most of the Jirgas Ulama (religious clerics) are considered to be an essential part of it. The inclusion of Ulama is making this institution vulnerable to shariatization. A significant number of decisions are taking place on the basis of locally interpreted Shariah law. The paper argues that this trend of shariatization of this institution leads to the weakening of the social relations in the area

    No full text
Domestic violence, rooted in patriarchy and conservatism, significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting a challenge to gender justice. This study examines the pandemic's impact on domestic violence in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, using an exploratory mixed-methods approach. In-depth interviews (IDIs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) with practitioners and experts, alongside a web-based survey with field-level practitioners and community members, revealed that domestic violence surged during the pandemic. Factors such as mobility restrictions, loss of livelihoods, and prolonged presence of men at home exacerbated violence against women and young girls. Additionally, increased household chores, school closures, and the absence of recreational activities led to heightened aggression. The findings highlight that domestic violence was a widespread issue across social classes in South Asia, reflecting the pandemic's deep impact on socio-economic and familial dynamics, with women and children bearing the brunt of this crisis

    No full text
This study aims to investigate the impact of digitalisation in developing procurement and supply chain resilience in the post pandemic era within the context of global manufacturing sector. A systematic literature review identifies 63 conceptual and empirical studies while focusing on five global manufacturing sectors including: automotive, electronics, food & beverages, apparel, and pharmaceutical sectors. The primary elements that affected the impact of pandemics on procurement and supply chain resilience are: policy management, globalisation, and geographical characteristics. Pandemics create substantial risks and hazards in terms of demand variations (surges and dips) and price increases, depending on the sector. Other risks and hazards differ across industries, such as supply shortages, financial difficulties for suppliers, declining working capital, and worker health issues. Good practises for mitigating the impact of pandemics on procurement and supply chain resilience primarily include: boosting agility, adopting staff safety measures, and expanding E-commerce. Manufacturing firms can adopt a range of digital technologies to diversify their supply chains and to pro-actively engage in more collaborative relationships with stakeholders throughout their supply chains in order to develop more resilient supply chains in the post pandemic era. This study provides a practical set of recommendations regarding how to successfully develop supply chain resilience in the post pandemic era by employing a range of digital technologies including: Artificial Intelligence, Block Chain Technology, Augmented and Virtual Reality; Additive Manufacturing; Internet of Things, Big Data Analytics etc. in addressing risk and resilience challenges across a range of global manufacturing sectors
