Carbonic fluids in the Hamadi gold deposit, Sudan: Origin and contribution to gold mineralization

    Get PDF
The Hamadi gold deposit is located in North Sudan, and occurs in the Neoproterozoic metamorphic strata of the Arabian–Nubian Shield. Two types of gold mineralization can be discerned: gold-bearing quartz veins and altered rock ores near ductile shear zones. The gold-bearing quartz veins are composed of white to gray quartz associated with small amounts of pyrite and other polymetallic sulfide minerals. Wall-rock alterations include mainly beresitization, epidotization, chloritization, and carbonatization. CO2-rich inclusions are commonly seen in gold-bearing quartz veins and quartz veinlets from gold-bearing altered rocks; these include mainly one-phase carbonic (CO2 ± CH4 ± N2) inclusions and CO2–H2O inclusions with CO2/H2O volumetric ratios of 30% to ∼80%. Laser Raman analysis does not show the H2O peak in carbonic inclusions. In quartz veins, the melting temperature of solid CO2 (Tm,CO2) of carbonic inclusions has a narrow range of −59.6 to −56.8 °C. Carbonic inclusions also have CO2 partial homogenization temperatures (Th,CO2) of −28.3 to +23.7 °C, with most of the values clustering between +4.0 and +20 °C; all of these inclusions are homogenized into the liquid CO2 state. The densities range from 0.73 to 1.03 g/cm3. XCH4 of carbonic fluid inclusions ranges from 0.004 to 0.14, with most XCH4 around 0.05. In CO2–H2O fluid inclusions, Tm,CO2 values are recorded mostly at around −57.5 °C. The melting temperature of clathrate is 3.8–8.9 °C. It is suggested that the lowest trapping pressures of CO2 fluids would be 100 to ∼400 MPa, on the basis of the Th,CO2 of CO2-bearing one-phase (LCO2) inclusions and the total homogenization temperatures (Th,tot) of paragenetic CO2-bearing two-phase (LCO2–LH2O) inclusions. For altered rocks, the Tm,CO2 of the carbonic inclusions has a narrow range of −58.4 to ∼−57.0 °C, whereas the Th,CO2 varies widely (−19 to ∼+29 °C). Most carbonic inclusions and the carbonic phases in the CO2–H2O inclusions are homogenized to liquid CO2 phases, which correspond to densities of 0.70 to ∼1.00 g/cm3. Fluid inclusions in a single fluid inclusion assemblage (FIA) have narrow Tm,CO2 and Th,CO2 values, but they vary widely in different FIAs and non-FIAs, which indicates that there was a wide range of trapping pressure and temperature (P–T) conditions during the ore-forming process in late retrograde metamorphism after the metamorphism peak period. The carbonic inclusions in the Hamadi gold deposit are interpreted to have resulted from unmixing of an originally homogeneous aqueous–carbonic mixture during retrogress metamorphism caused by decreasing P–T conditions. CO2 contributed to gold mineralization by buffering the pH range and increasing the gold concentration in the fluids. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. Latent Topic Model Based Representations for a Robust Theme Identification of Highly Imperfect Automatic Transcriptions

    No full text
International audienceSpeech analytics suffer from poor automatic transcription quality. To tackle this difficulty, a solution consists in mapping transcriptions into a space of hidden topics. This abstract representation allows to work around drawbacks of the ASR process. The well-known and commonly used one is the topic-based representation from a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). During the LDA learning process, distribution of words into each topic is estimated automatically. Nonetheless, in the context of a classification task, LDA model does not take into account the targeted classes. The supervised Latent Dirichlet Allocation (sLDA) model overcomes this weakness by considering the class, as a response, as well as the document content itself. In this paper, we propose to compare these two classical topic-based representations of a dialogue (LDA and sLDA), with a new one based not only on the dialogue content itself (words), but also on the theme related to the dialogue. This original Author-topic Latent Variables (ATLV) representation is based on the Author-topic (AT) model. The effectiveness of the proposed ATLV representation is evaluated on a classification task from automatic dialogue transcriptions of the Paris Transportation customer service call. Experiments confirmed that this ATLV approach outperforms by far the LDA and sLDA approaches, with a substantial gain of respectively 7.3 and 5.8 points in terms of correctly labeled conversations

The Quaero group is a consortium of French and German organizations working on Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval1. LIG participated to the semantic indexing main task, localization task and concept pair task. LIG also participated to the organization of this task. This paper describes these participations which are quite similar to our previous year’s participations. For the semantic indexing main task, our approach uses a six-stages processing pipelines for computing scores for the likelihood of a video shot to contain a target concept. These scores are then used for producing a ranked list of images or shots that are the most likely to contain the target concept. The pipeline is composed of the following steps: descriptor extraction, descriptor optimization, classification, fusion of descriptor variants, higher-level fusion, and re-ranking. We used a number of different descriptors and a hierarchical fusion strategy. We also used conceptual feedback by adding a vector of classification score to the pool of descriptors. The best Quaero run has a Mean Inferred Average Precision of 0.2848, which ranked us 2nd out of 26 participants. We also co-organized the TRECVid SIN 2013 task and collaborative annotation. 1 Participation to the organization of the semantic indexing task For the Fourth year, UJF-LIG has co-organized the semantic indexing task at TRECVid with the support of Quaero. A list of 500 target concepts has been produced, 346 of which have been collaboratively annotated by the participants and by Quaero annotators. A subset of 60 of them was selected for participants’ submissions and 38 of which have been officially evaluated. The 500 concepts are structured according to the LSCOM hierarchy [14]. They include all the TRECVi

Migrant literature – perceptions of the 'foreign other' and experiences with cultural differences in Italian contemporary literature

    No full text
Based on the theoretic fundament of Italian migrant literature, our thesis analyses four works of Italian authors of African origin. ?Immigrato?, ?Io venditore di elfenati. Una vita per forza fra Dakar, Parigi e Milano? and ?La promessa di Hamadi? are all 'debut novels' telling autobiographical stories that show the experiences and impressions of the authors and co-authors while immerging in a new, foreign culture. The writers of these books can be seen as pioneers of the ?letteratura italiana della migrazione?, whose aim was to draw the attention of the Italian population on the topic of immigration. The author of ?I bambini delle rose? is an exception in this thesis, because his originality in language and distance to the testimonial literature is already part of the second generation of authors engaging in migrant literature. With his short novel, he provides a more complex text that is not only illustrating the cultural shock, but is also dealing with issues of multiculturalism. Therefore it constitutes part of the ?postcolonial? era. Distinctive for all analysed books is that the plot is mainly located in larger towns in Italy, which have been identified by the writers as intercultural and multicultural places and are affected by illegal intrigues. The authors point out national problems in dealing with immigrants and criticise the Italian politics as well as its federal administration. This analysis of literary texts shows how every single author is editing the different subjects of migration literature. In doing so, the main focus of the authors lies on the illustration of its protagonists and their identities, the perceptions of the 'foreign other' as well as the experiences with cultural differences, which in the course of immigration have had a great impact on the individuals.vorgelegt von Petra Margit Kager-PaierAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des VerfassersGraz, Univ., Dipl.-Arb., 2013Zsfassung in dt. und engl. Vascular Complications in the Era of Transcatheter Treatment of Adult Structural Heart Disease: A Single-Center Early Experience

    Get PDF
Transcatheter treatment is becoming the mainstay treatment for structural heart diseases (SHD) in prohibitive surgical risk patients. Recently with the encouraging results, it is being offered to regular risk patients. Peripheral vascular complications (VCs) are still inherent to these procedures due to the nature of this atherosclerotic high-risk group and the profile of the devices. This is a single-center early first year experience with such events occurring after initiating a SHD program treating severe aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation, mitral valve prolapse and regurgitation, as well as paravalvular leaks. Out of 33 patients in this time period, 5 developed PV complications which are detailed in this article with their associated risk factors and management. These include access-related complications, closure device issues, arterial rupture post device embolization, and vessel dissection. Vascular complications of those procedures take special interest since they are associated with a worse long-term prognosis. Thus, prevention with proper planning remains of essence along with multidisciplinary management. © The Author(s) 2020

Lower limb amputation following venous cannulation for VA-ECMO: a case report

    Get PDF
Lower limb amputation following arterial cannulation for VA-ECMO has been described in the literature. Limb ischemia however following venous cannulation is very rare and not quite understood. We present a case of limb ischemia following venous cannulation. A combination of venous congestion, compartment syndrome and subsequent arterial insufficiency is the proposed pathophysiology. Shock and use of vasopressors are compounding factors. Limb ischemia can be transient and reversible if diagnosed immediately and treated by early removal of the cannula. Our patient was unstable and ECMO dependent, and removal of the cannula was not an option. This resulted in limb loss and eventual above knee amputation. Use of the smallest appropriate venous cannula and early fasciotomy, in addition to hemodynamic optimization are measures that could help in preventing major amputation. © The Author(s) 2021
