Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Etude par microscopie optique des comportements spatio-temporels thermo- et photo-induits et de l’auto-organisation dans les monocristaux à transition de spin
This thesis work is devoted to visualization by optical microscopy of thermo- and photo-induced phase transitions, in switchable spin transition single crystals. The study of crystals of the compound [{Fe (NCSe) (py) 2} 2 (m-bpypz)] showed the possibility to control reversibly the dynamics of the HS/LS interface through a photo-thermal effect generated by an irradiation of the whole crystal or using a spatially localized light spot on the crystal surface. The investigations of the effect of the light intensity on the transition temperature have highlighted the importance of the coupling between the crystal and the thermal bath in these experiments. Concomitantly, we developped a reaction diffusion model allowing to describe and iden-tify the relevant physical parameters involved in the control of the movement of HS/LS interface. The obtained results are very encouraging and reproduce the main features of the experimental data. However the origin of the interface orientation observed by the optical microscopy in the crystal of the compound [{Fe (NCSe) (py) 2} 2 (m-bpypz)] re-mained mysterious, and needed an elastic approach to be handled. At this end, an electro-elastic model including the volume change at the spin transition was developed. By taking into account for the anisotropy of the unit cell deformation at the transition, we were able to reproduce quantitatively the experimental HS/LS interface orientation. This result confirms the crucial role of the lattice symmetry and its elastic properties in the emergence of a stable interface orientation. The last part of the thesis is devoted to the investigation of photo-induced effects at very low temperatures (~10K). There, we visualized for the first time the real time transformation of a single crystal under LIESST (Light Induced Excited Spin State Trapping) effect as well as its subsequent relaxation at higher temperatures. We have also studied the light induced instabilities through investigation on the LITH (Light Induced Thermal Hysteresis) loops. Around the latter, a fascinating world made of nonlinear effects, and patterns formation emerged, recalled the well known Turing structures. These results lead to new horizons that will give access to new theories and original experimental observations that will enrich the topics opening the new avenues to study of nonlinear phenomena in spin crossover solids.Ce travail de thèse est dédié à la visualisation par microscopie optique des transitions de phases, thermo- et photo-induites dans des monocristaux à transition de spin. L’étude des cristaux du composé [{Fe(NCSe)(py)2}2(m-bpypz)] a permis de montrer la possibilité de contrôler la dynamique de l’interface HS/BS (haut spin/bas spin) par une irradiation lumineuse appliquée sur toute la surface du cristal ou de manière localisée. Les investigations expérimentales menées sur l’effet de l’intensité de la lumière sur la température de transition ont mis en évidence d’une part l’importance du couplage entre le cristal et le bain thermique, et d’autre part le rôle de la diffusion de la chaleur dans le monocristal. En parallèle, un modèle basé sur une description de type Ginzburg-Landau, a permis de mettre sur pied une description de type réaction diffusion des effets spatio-temporels accompagnant la transition de spin dans un monocristal. Celui-ci a permis d’identifier et de comprendre le rôle des paramètres pertinents entrant en jeu dans le contrôle du mouvement de l’interface HS/BS. Les résultats obtenus sont très encourageants et reproduisent avec une grande fidélité les données expérimentales. Cependant l’origine de l’orientation de l’interface HS/BS observée par microscopie optique dans les cristaux du composé [{Fe(NCSe)(py)2}2(m-bpypz)] était restée mystérieuse. Pour résoudre cette question, nous avons développé un modèle électro-élastique qui tient compte du changement de volume au cours de la transition de spin. Ce dernier nous a conduits à analyser l’effet de la symétrie du réseau cristallin et de la forme du cristal sur l’orientation de l’interface élastique. En l’appliquant au composé [{Fe(NCSe)(py)2}2(m-bpypz)], en tenant compte du caractère anisotrope du changement de la maille élémentaire lors du passage HSBS, nous avons réussi à retrouver quantitativement l’orientation du front observée expérimentalement en microscopie optique. Ceci confirme bien le rôle primordial de l’élasticité dans le comportement des matériaux à transition de spin. Des études sous lumière à très basse température nous ont donné la possibilité de suivre en temps réel, l’effet LIESST (Light Induced Excited Spin State Trapping), la re-laxation coopérative du cristal ainsi que l’instabilité photo-induite LITH (Light Induced Thermal Hysteresis). Un monde fascinant est apparu autour de cette dernière, avec la présence de comportements totalement inédits. Ainsi, et pour la première fois, nous avons mis en évidence l’existence de phénomènes d’auto-organisation et de comportements autocatalytiques du front de transition. Cette physique non-linéaire dénote un comportement actif du cristal, par suite d’une subtile préparation autour d’un état instable. Ces comportements rappellent les structures dissipatives de Turing et ouvrent des perspectives fascinantes pour cette thématique, tant sur le plan expérimental que théorique
Mesures invariantes pour des équations aux dérivées partielles hamiltoniennes
In this thesis, we are concerned with the qualitative study of solutions of Hamiltonian partial differential equations by the way of the invariant measures theory. Indeed, existence of such a measure provides some informations concerning the large time dynamics of the PDE in question. In this thesis we treat two "extremal" situations. In the first part, we consider equations with infinitely many conservation laws, and in the second, we study equations for which we know only one non-trivial conservation law. We study the first equations by considering the Benjamin-Ono equation. The latter is a model describing internal waves in a fluide of great depth. We are concerned with the dynamics of that equation on the space C^∞(T) by constructing for it an invariant measure on that space. Accordingly, an almost sure (w.r.t. this measure) recurrence property is established for infinitely smooth solutions of that equation. Then, we prove qualitative properties for the constructed measure by showing that there are infinitely many independent observables whose distributions via this measure are absolutely continuous w.r.t. the Lebesgue measure on R. Moreover, we establish that the measure is of at least 2-dimensional nature. In this work, we used the Fluctuation-Dissipation-Limit (FDL) approach introduced by Kuksin and Shirikyan. Notice that an almost sure recurrence property for the Benjamin-Ono equation was established on Sobolev spaces by Deng, Tzvetkov and Visciglia.In the second part of the thesis, we consider the cubic Klein-Gordon equation, which is an example of Hamiltonian PDEs for which we know only one conservation law. This equation models the evolution of a massive relativistic particle. Here, we consider both the case of the tri-dimensional periodic solutions and those defined on a bounded domain of R³. In both settings, we construct an invariant measure concentrated on the Sobolev space H²xH¹, again with use of the FDL approach. Another aspect of this work is to extend the FDL approach to the context of PDEs having only one conservation law; indeed, in previous works, this approach required two conservation laws. Qualitative properties for the measure and almost sure (w.r.t. this measure) recurrence for H²-solutions are proven. Notice that previous works by Burq-Tzvetkov, de Suzzoni, Bourgain-Bulut and Xu have treated the invariant Gibbs measure problem in the radial symmetry context for waves equations.Dans cette thèse, on s'intéresse à l'étude qualitative des solutions d'équations aux dérivées partielles hamiltoniennes par le biais de la théorie des mesures invariantes. L'existence d'une telle mesure pour une EDP fournit, en effet, des informations sur sa dynamique en temps long. Nous étudierons deux situations quelque peu "extrémales". Dans une première partie, nous nous intéressons aux équations ayant une infinité de lois de conservation et dans une seconde, aux équations dont on ne connaît qu'une seule loi de conservation non triviale.Nous étudions les premières équations par le biais de l'équation de Benjamin-Ono. Il s'agit d'un modèle de description des ondes internes dans un fluide de grande profondeur.Nous nous intéressons à la dynamique de cette équation sur l'espace C^∞(T) en lui construisant une mesure invariante sur cet espace. Notons qu'une propriété de récurrence presque sûre a été établie pour les solutions de régularité Sobolev de l'équation de Benjamin-Ono, dans les travaux de Deng, Tzvetkov et Visciglia.Dans l'autre partie de la thèse, nous abordons l'équation de Klein-Gordon à non-linéarité cubique, c'est un exemple d'EDPs hamiltoniennes pour lesquelles il n'est connu qu'une seule loi de conservation non triviale. Cette équation modélise l'évolution d'une particule massive relativiste. Ici, nous considérons les cas où l'équation est posée sur le tore tri-dimensionnel ou sur un domaine borné de R³ à bord assez régulier. Nous lui construisons une mesure invariante concentrée sur l'espace de Sobolev H², en utilisant toujours l'approche FDL. Un autre aspect de ce travail est d'étendre le cadre de cette approche au contexte des EDPs à une seule loi de conservation, en effet, dans les travaux antérieurs, l'approche FDL avait nécessité deux lois de conservation pour fonctionner. Puis nous établissons une propriété de non-dégénérescence pour la mesure construite. Par conséquent, une propriété de récurrence presque sûre, par rapport à la mesure construite, est prouvée. Notons que des travaux antérieurs dus à Burq-Tzvetkov, de Suzzoni, Bourgain-Bulut et Xu ont traité la question de mesure de Gibbs invariante pour des équations des ondes dans un contexte radial

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Exchange Rate Regimes, Capital Controls and the Pattern of Speculative Capital Flows
This paper proposes theoretical and empirical analysis of the effect of capital controls and alternative exchange rate regimes on the patterns of speculative capital. I argue that the exchange rate regime and its interaction with the monetary regime can explain the patterns of speculative capital around the world. I show that speculative capitals are more likely to flow into countries in which there is a contradiction between the monetary and the exchange regimes, e.g. more likely in countries with managed exchange rates. I model exchange-rate as a jump process in a stochastic dynamic portfolio optimization. Through this approach, the influence of the frequency and the size of "jumps" in the exchange rate on the allocation of speculative capital can be determined. It will also allow inflows to be endogenous. By linking the jumps to the frequency of exchange rate movements, this paper determines the effectiveness of different exchange rate regimes in fending off "hot money" for a given monetary regime. On the empirical side, I use a newly constructed data set to verify the theoretical predictions of the determinants and the patterns of speculative capital.
