Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Full text linkThe author analyzes the issues related to the offense of the indecent excess, defined in Art. 140 of the Offense Code. The narrative runs through the issues of: the object – protection, assassination – which is morality and decency in the public perspective and the public order; forms of committing of the offense – it is universal nature and may take the form of an action. The considered offense does not have to be implemented “directly” in the public space, it is enough for the occurrence of the indecent excess, that it could be noticed by other people. Indecent excess does not have to be a behavior that violates shamefulness, exposing publicly intimate or obscene sexual behavior, but it can also violate decency in other ways. An indecent excess may be carried out intentionally or unintentionally. Article 140 of the Offense Code typifying the analyzed offense may occur – from the point of view of legal qualification – in the coincidence (apparent or real) with specific provisions listing specific crimes or offenses.Autor podejmuje analizę kwestii związanych z wykroczeniem nieobyczajnego wybryku, który określony został w art. 140 k.w. Narracja wiedzie przez zagadnienia: przedmiotu – ochrony, zamachu – którym jest moralność i obyczajność w perspektywie publicznej oraz porządek publiczny; formy popełnienia wykroczenia – ma ono charakter powszechny i przybrać może postać działania. Rozpatrywane wykroczenie dla swego zaistnienia nie musi zostać zrealizowane „bezpośrednio” w przestrzeni publicznej. Wystarczy, aby nieobyczajny wybryk mógł zostać dostrzeżony przez inne osoby. Nieobyczajny wybryk nie musi za każdym razem mieć charakteru zachowania naruszającego wstydliwość, eksponującego publicznie intymne lub obsceniczne zachowania seksualne, lecz może naruszać obyczajność również na inne sposoby. Nieobyczajny wybryk może być w zakresie strony podmiotowej zrealizowany umyślnie albo nieumyślnie. Artykuł 140 k.w. typizujący analizowane wykroczenia może występować – od strony kwalifikacji prawnej – w zbiegu (pozornym czy rzeczywistym) z określonymi przepisami typizującymi konkretne przestępstwa albo wykroczenia
Look Beyond Textbooks: Information Literacy for First-Year Science Students
No full textThis paper describes classroom activities to help students understand the publication cycle and the characteristics of major publication channels (textbooks, books, encyclopedias, and periodicals) for first-year physics students. When designing these activities, the author considered the intellectual development characteristics and the epistemological view of first-year students. These activities help students appreciate how information is refined and repackaged along the publication cycle. Through understanding the varieties of information sources, they learn how to choose the appropriate sources to meet their information needs. Although the activities were created for physics students, they can easily be modified for students in other fields of study. © 2011, Gabrielle K.W. Wong

Effectiveness of coastal defence measures: Design background for coastal defence and management: near field and far-field factors in overall (geometrical) and structural design
No full textThe description of the transformation of shore in larger scales, i.e. the far-field effects, is summarized in Chapter 2 while the near-field mechanisms, encompassing different overall and local failure modes, stability and performance are dealt with in Chapter 3. Both are foliowed by Chapters 4 and 5 with design computations and examples, respectively. Unconventional design is illustrated in Chapter 6, and national policies of coastal management and defence are depicted in the closing Chapter 7. The design procedures for coastal structures should include geometrical design and structural design reflecting respectively the far-field and near-field requirements imposed on structures. This corresponds to our division of design procedures into two basic groups concentrating on \u95 overall layout and configuration of a structure as a whole, and its interaction with the coastal environment to produce desirable sedimentation patterns and coastal management effects \u95 stability and reliability of the structure and its components, hence dimensioning of structural constituents, associated with possible unavoidable and undesirable hazards due to the loadings exerted by the coastal environment. In other words, the first group involves design parameters producing the best environmental effectiveness of a structure in 'ideal' conditions, i.e. upon negligence of possible 'harmful by-effects' such as different modes of failures and instabilities, both overall and internal. The second group is concerned about these 'by-effects' and provides the tools which secure the integrity and proper operation of the structure and its components
