SunSmart? Skin cancer knowledge and preventive behaviour in a British population representative sample

No full text
The incidence of skin cancer has risen rapidly in the UK over the last 20 years, prompting public health organizations to try and raise awareness of the dangers of sun exposure and the need to practice sun-safe behaviour. This study aimed to assess baseline levels of sun-safe knowledge and behaviour in a British population-representative sample, prior to the launch of Cancer Research UK's 'SunSmart' campaign. A face-to-face survey was conducted through the Office for National Statistics as part of their Omnibus survey. In total, 1848 men and women aged 18 and over were interviewed. Knowledge of what to do to reduce skin cancer risk was modest. Two-thirds mentioned avoiding the sun by seeking shade, 50% mentioned covering up and only 43% said to use high factor sunscreen. Practice of sun-safe behaviours was also poor, with only one-third saying they sought shade, covered up or used high factor sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun. Men and those from lower socioeconomic groups were least informed and least likely to report using sun-protective behaviours. Increases in both knowledge and use of appropriate sun-protective behaviours are needed if skin cancer incidence rates are to decrease

Small scale energy release driven by supergranular flows on the quiet Sun

No full text
In this article we present data and modelling for the quiet Sun that strongly suggest a ubiquitous small-scale atmospheric heating mechanism that is driven solely by converging supergranular flows. A possible energy source for such events is the power transfer to the plasma via the work done on the magnetic field by photospheric convective flows, which exert drag of the footpoints of magnetic structures. In this paper we present evidence of small scale energy release events driven directly by the hydrodynamic forces that act on the magnetic elements in the photosphere, as a result of supergranular scale flows. We show strong spatial and temporal correlation between quiet Sun soft X-ray emission (from Yohkoh and SOHO MDI-derived flux removal events driven by deduced photospheric flows. We also present a simple model of heating generated by flux submergence, based on particle acceleration by converging magnetic mirrors. In the near future, high resolution soft X-ray images from XRT on the Hinode satellite will allow definitive, quantitative verification of our results

1. This experiment was intended to trace out the occurrence of the cucumber downy mildew (Peronosplasmopara cubensis (B. et C.) Clint.), which is the most serious disease of cucumber, in South Taiwan. Control experiments were carried out four times in the past four years. 2. Infection begins when 3 or 4 leaves send out and becomes serious up to the fruitsetting time. The percentage of the diseased leaf is as high as 71.74 by average of harvesting time. 3. In South Taiwan dowan downy mildew of cucumber were seen all through the year, however, it is very rare in July and August. It becomes abundant gradually from September on and reaches the highest up to May. 4. We have not found any variety resistant to mildew, however, the susceptibility among the 36 varieties tested shows siginificant different. The percentage of the diseased leaf of the most susceptible variety is 89.37, while the less susceptible variety, a Fengshan local variety, only 56.13. 5. Fungicides spray, more or less, can suppress the infection of the disease, but can not give complete control. 6. Kupoid (or Copper Fungicide No. 2) has less effect for control, the percentage of the diseased leaf s still high as 30 though sprayed 3 times weekly. Copper Fungicide No. 1 and Bordeaux mixture are much better, but Copper-soap is the best one. The percentage of the diseased leaf is about 10.9 when sprayed twice weekly. 7. Dead leaves occur slightly in Copper-soap treatment plot. The weekly sprayed plot is 7.0 per cent and none when sprayed twice weekly. 8. Bordeaux mixture (0.5%) with less lime (1/3 lime as compared with CuSO4 by weight) is as good as Copper-soap (0.15-0.2%). So it is advisable to use less lime in Bordeaux mixture for the control of cucumber downy mildew. And it is more economic because its fungicidal effect would maintain a longer time. 9. As cucumber grows quickly, all the fungicides, which act as protectants, should be sprayed frequantly if it is hoped to raise cucumber successfully

The author has dealt with amalgamation of pattern primitives and its justification in language description, in earlier studies [4] & [5]. Here an attempt is being made to apply distribution free techniques, more commonly known as non-parametric statistical methods in finding the confidence coefficient and adjustment factor for obtaining the standard form of words taken from different sub-dialects.Dhami, H.S.. Orientation to the sun by animals and its interaction with crypsis

No full text
1. Orientation with respect to the sun has been observed in a wide range of species and has generally been interpreted in terms of thermoregulation and/or UV protection. For countershaded animals, orientation with respect to the sun may also result from the pressure to exploit the gradient of coloration optimally to enhance crypsis. 2. Here we use computational modelling to predict the optimal countershading pattern for an oriented body. We assess how camouflage performance declines as orientation varies using a computational model that incorporates realistic lighting environments. 3. Once an optimal countershading pattern for crypsis has been chosen, we determine separately how ultra-violet protection/irradiation and solar thermal inflow fluctuate with orientation. 4. We show that body orientations that could optimally use countershading to enhance crypsis are very similar to those that allow optimal solar heat inflow and ultra-violet protection. 5. Our findings suggest that crypsis has been overlooked as a selective pressure on orientation and that new experiments should be designed to tease apart the respective roles of these different selective pressures. We propose potential experiments that could achieve this.Peer reviewe
