Clergyman as a Subject and Object of Death Commemoration in Late Medieval Prussian Town. Case studies from Thorn (Toruń) at the turn of the 15th and 16th Century
No full textThe article explores four foundations by priests in Thorn (Toruń) as good examples of the bourgeois religious culture of Late Medieval Prussia. These institutions were established by wealthy priests who were simultaneously prominent members of the town community. As a result, detailed documents were issued, providing valuable insights into the extent of the priests’ responsibilities and the financial basis of the foundations. Furthermore, the fact that the funders themselves were priests shows clergymen not only as providers of prayer services but also as members of the town community who benefited from such commemorative practices.

Estas fundações foram estabelecidas por indivíduos proeminentes e ricos da comunidade urbana e, por isso, deram origem a documentos pormenorizados que fornecem informações valiosas sobre a extensão das responsabilidades dos vigários e a base financeira das fundações. Além disso, o facto de os próprios fundadores serem padres permite-nos ver os clérigos não só como prestadores de serviços de oração, mas também como membros da comunidade da cidade que beneficiavam de tais práticas comemorativas.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Estas fundações foram estabelecidas por indivíduos proeminentes e ricos da comunidade urbana e, por isso, deram origem a documentos pormenorizados que fornecem informações valiosas sobre a extensão das responsabilidades dos vigários e a base financeira das fundações. Além disso, o facto de os próprios fundadores serem padres permite-nos ver os clérigos não só como prestadores de serviços de oração, mas também como membros da comunidade da cidade que beneficiavam de tais práticas comemorativas
‘De presbitero geniti.’ Dispensations from illegitimate birth for the medieval Prussian clergy
No full textThe article examines the issue of illegitimate birth (defectus natalium) among clergy in late medieval Prussia. As one of the irregularities under canon law (irregularitas), it posed a barrier to ordination. However, papal dispensations offered a potential solution, typically granted by the Apostolic Penitentiary. This study primarily focuses on dispensations obtained through this route. The analysis of twenty-one supplications from Prussian dioceses spanning 1431–1523 reveals a significantly lower number compared to the rest of Europe, which was likely influenced by Prussia’s peripheral status, church structures, legal awareness, and the scope of interactions with the Holy See. The article also explores the social demographics of those seeking dispensations, noting a prevalence of scholars. Additionally, it examines the status of parents of illegitimate clergy candidates. Seven of them were from lay relationships of single state (solutus/soluta), two from relationships of a man of single state and a married woman (solutus/coniugata), while 12 were descendants of priests.
The discussion of illegitimate births of clergymen and their efforts to obtain dispensations is enriched by a detailed examination of the case of brothers Albert and Kirstan from Ostrowite in Gdańsk Pomerania, sons of a local parson who sought dispensation for ordination. In 1380, they successfully obtained dispensation from the Apostolic Penitentiary, later approved by the Archbishop of Gniezno as their proper ordinary. The article includes two documents from the State Archives in Toruń related to this case, contributing significantly due to the scarcity of such sources, exacerbated by the absence of preserved files from the Apostolic Penitentiary during this period

Full text linkThe article addresses the problem of the functioning of secular clergymen in the castles of the Teutonic Order in Prussia. Brother priests were to run the religious life of the convents, but there is sufficient evidence showing that non-Teutonic clergymen were also employed to do this job. This group belonged to the category of “servants” (gesinden). It included chaplains of Teutonic officials, chaplains serving in the choir, vicars in infirmaries, deacons, sub-deacons, ringers and alumni. They played auxiliary functions in relation to brother priests, the shortage of whom may be noticeable in the first half of the 15th century. Secular clergymen helped to say the canonical hours in the castle’s choirs; however, they acted also as chaplains and notaries of Teutonic commanders, Pflegers or Vogts. They received remuneration for their work for the convents – both in the form of money and maintenance in the castle. Nevertheless, not all secular clergymen lived in the castle. Some of them owned prebendaries in the vicinity of the castle and treated their service in the castle as extra work, which not only provided them with additional income, but also facilitated the career development – as it is indicated in the recommendations of Teutonic officials to take over prebendaries. The service in the castle was often the preliminary step to become a member of the Teutonic Order
