A Master of Arts thesis in Translation and Interpreting MATI (English/Arabic/English) by Abu Bakr Al Ani entitled, "Jerry Seinfeld: I'm Telling You For The Last Time, Translation and Commentary," submitted in January 2015. Thesis advisor is Dr. Sattar Izwaini. Soft and hard copy available.Translation of humor is a field that may not have a fair share of research, especially in the English to Arabic field where the cultural aspect may differ more vividly compared to translating into other languages. This thesis looks into the issue of subtitling a movie of a stand-up comedy act titled 'Jerry Seinfeld: I'm Telling You for the Last Time'. It introduces the genre of comedy and sheds light on some of the challenges that accompany the translation such genre. These challenges include translating humor, translating cultural specific terms, and dealing with technical issues of the subtitling. The thesis includes a translation of the script in the form of subtitle alongside the original text. The translation is followed by a commentary discussing the challenges and justifying the choices made while addressing these challenges. The thesis concludes with findings and recommendations for future similar translation attempts. It has been found that translating comedy needs to be addressed with special care of the purpose and the audience of the translation given the genre. A recommendation of the project is that looking at the translation process as a reproduction process, for a translator to be able to translate comedy, they need to be able to able to write comedy. For the purpose of this thesis, a disc of the movie with the Arabic subtitles is produced alongside the thesis to provide an actual audiovisual final product of the translation. The said disc can be obtained upon request by contacting the author and/or the supervisor of this thesis at: [email protected] (the author) [email protected] (the supervisor)College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Arabic and Translation StudiesMaster of Arts in English/Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting (MATI

Author attribution: a survey of modern attribution methods

    No full text
Author attribution has been a challenging area of research for many years. It is very helpful in identifying the author of an unknown document. Using features extracted from the documents with known authors we try and match the features with features extracted from document with unknown author. But during the last few years’ technology has substantially advanced. Many new software’s invented, many new algorithms created. Research advances in areas of information retrieval, natural language processing and machine learning have helped in making the author attribution easier. So the author attribution from the past has now comparably improved in terms of accuracy and is now used in many different areas like plagiarism detection and others. The main focus of the paper is mainly on the approaches used for author attribution. In this research we will discuss various author attribution approaches that have been discovered in recent years. Furthermore, discuss their merits and demerits

Effect of physical and chemical edaphic factors on susceptibility of cotton seedlings to macrophomina phaseolina

Nineteen soil samples were obtained from different cotton-producing areas in Egypt. The geographic distribution of these samples was as follows: 1 (5.26%) from Minufiya; 4 (21.05%) from Kafr El-Sheikh; 2 (10.53%) from Minya; 3 (15.79%) from Gharbiya; 7 (36.84%) from Sharqiya; and 2 (10.53%) from Faiyum. Clay soil (84.21%) was the predominant type in the samples. Twenty-two physical and chemical parameters were measured in the 19 samples. Data for seedling disease variables (postmergence damping-off and dry weight) and edaphic factors were entered into a computerized stepwise multiple regression analysis. Using the predictors supplied by stepwise regression, two models were constructed. These models showed that edaphic factors accounted for 71.03 and 93.13% of the total variation in postemergence damping-off and dry weight, respectively, in models. From stepwise regression analysis, it was concluded that high soil saturation percent, high Ca++ content, low SO4 = content, and high Mg++ content were associated with high postemergence damping-off. The present study also showed that high saturation percent, low potassium content, low calcium carbonate content, low Mg++ content, high coarse sand content, and high phosphorus content were associated with an increase in the dry weight of seedlings. This work was fully supported by the Plant Pathology Research Institute, Giza, Egypt.Corresponding Author: Mohmed A. Personal/perverted

PERSONAL/PERVERTED explores my attraction to the human body and my fascination with its grotesque features and functions that are masked to others. I look to the body, to the skin and to the body’s inside and outside. I explore notions of the uncomfortable and the unsettling to create repulsive yet seductive imagery. I use heavily process-based actions to become lost in repetition and the consumption of time. When making my work, the process is entirely self-indulgent -- a release of my own personal and perverted reality

Internal Factors Affecting the Rate of Burnout (Case Study: Social Workers Working in the Organization Tehran Welfare) Sattar Parvin[1]  ,  Salah Halimi[2] Received: 19/12/ 2016             Accepted: 23/05/217   Abstract The purpose of the current research is determining the amount of occupational burnout and the effects of intra organizational factors among the social workers of welfare of Tehran province. This is a kind of survey research. The statistical community is almost 200 persons who were the social workers of welfare organization in Tehran. According to the achieved findings, the amount of occupational burnout is very high. The results also indicated that the intra organizational communications are so weak and the management method is not in its effective mode. Based on the hypothesis and the model of this research, using the regression functions it has been observed that communications with other colleagues have the most effective role on the occupational burnout with following value: . The latter variable is job stress with the value of –0.382. In total, sixty percentage of variable variance determines the amount of occupational burnout. According the findings, it can be concluded that there is a direct relationship between the bureaucratic atmosphere of the organization and the occupational burnout. In other words, when there is not any friendly relationship through the employees, the amount of occupational burnout increases. Strategic management of population programs

    No full text
Formal strategic planning and management appear to contribute to organizational effectiveness. The author surveys the literature on strategic management in private/for-profit organizations and applies lessons from that literature to population programs. Few would argue that population programs would not benefit from strategic planning and management, but it would be inadvisable to initiate the process when the organization is faced with a short-term crisis; during or immediately before a change in leadership; or when implementation is unlikely. Public sector programs seem to have the latitude to manage strategically. Models available for adoption include life-cycle models, strategic issues management, stakeholder analysis, and portfolio analysis. The model selected may be a function of: (1) who will use it (life-cycle/evolutionary models may be well-suited to the planning needs of donors); (2) the presence of challenges to the survival of the program or to key components of it (stakeholder analysis would find ready application in those circumstances); and (3) the relative success and stability of the program (portfolio analysis may help a program balance its activities in a stable environment whereas strategic issues management is useful in responding to a dynamic environment.) It is important to marshall top-level support, designatewho will do the leg work, analyze the organization's history and current situation, assess internal strengths and weaknesses and external threats and opportunities, and summarize critical issues facing the program. Then a strategy may be developed. Among the available approaches are: (1) scenario developments (useful for a program that senses a need to change its approach to clients); (2) critical issues analysis (useful for refining successful programs); and (3) a goal approach (useful for programs with diffuse, ill-defined objectives). There are no short-cuts, it is argued. A strategic plan typically contains: (1) a mission statement that describes the social need to be addressed, what is unique about the organization, what its values are, and who the principal stakeholders are; (2) a statement of the population to be served and goals for service delivery and quality standards; (3) a service delivery strategy; (4) a financial strategy; (5) a marketing strategy; and (6) support strategies. Most organizations will find that there is no ideal structure - all require tradeoffs - and that attention should focus on eliminating patently dysfunctional aspects of the structure.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,ICT Policy and Strategies,Agricultural Knowledge&Information Systems,Educational Sciences,Enterprise Development&Reform
