The Appointment of Clarita Carlos as Philippine President's National Security Adviser: A Sentiment Analysis
<p>This study delved into the sentiments expressed by the public Facebook users regarding the appointment of Clarita Carlos as the Philippine president's national security adviser. Utilizing a qualitative approach with text mining, the research focused on a dataset comprising 100 selected Facebook comments from users in response to an online news article posted by GMA News. To identify commonly used words and assess user sentiments, the study harnessed the capabilities of Orange software. The study revealed that the most frequently used words as generated by Word Cloud in Orange software are carlo, prof, clarita, security, professor, congratulation, god, good, national, and bless. Employing thematic analysis, the research unveiled the prevalent sentiments in the Facebook user comments, which revolved around four emerging themes: (1) eloquence and female leadership in politics, (2) gender and leadership in the Philippine government, (3) corruption concerns in professor Carlos's potential appointment, and (4) security concerns regarding professor Carlos's appointment. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrated that the sentiments encompassed both positiveand negative polarities, with some usersadopting a neutralstance. The study underscores the value of employing sentiment analysis as a means to gain fresh insights into pressing issues, particularly within the context of ongoing national concerns. For educators, insights may be used to inform students about women in leadership and public perceptions, enriching discussions on gender dynamics and leadership with real-world sentiment analysis examples.</p>

River Water Quality Analysis via Headspace Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds
Human civilization has intensified the interaction between the community and the environment. This increases the threat on the environm ent for being over exploited and contaminated with m anmade products and synthetic chemicals. Of all, clean water is one of the resources that can be easily contaminated since it is a universal solvent and of high mobility. This work reports the development and optimization of a water quality monitoring system based on metal oxide sensors. The system is intended to a ssist the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in water sources online and onsite. The sampling mechanism was based on contactless mode, where headspace partial pressure of the VOCs formed above the water body in a close chamber was drawn for detection at the sensor platform. Pure toluene was used as standard to represent the broad spectrum of VOCs, and the sensor dynamic range was achieved from 1-1000 ppb. Several sensing parameters such as sampling time, headspace volume, and sensor recovery were s tudied and optimized. Besides direct detection of VOC contaminants in the water, the work has also been extended to detect VOCs produced by microbial communities and to c orrelate the size of the communities with the reading of V OCs recorded. This can serve to give b etter indication of water quality, not only on the conce ntration of VOCs c ontamination from chemicals, but also the content of microbes, which some can have severe effect on human health
Energy Poverty and its Spatial Differences in Nigeria: Reversing the Trend
AbstractThe high level of poverty in the developing countries is also manifested through access to energy. Nigeria is faced with an extreme lack of access to electrical energy in the midst of abundant natural energy resources. While attention is on hydro sources for electricity, energy supply is grossly inadequate and other sources of renewable energy attract very little attention. This study is focusing on energy poverty at the level of the households. The objectives of this work are to examine households’ access to energy, to measure energy poverty, to demonstrate spatial disparity in energy poverty and to establish a relationship between energy poverty and factors of energy access. The study used data published by the National Bureau of Statistics on energy access and parameters that may influence consumption of energy. These data are electricity connection to national grid by households and the use of clean energy for cooking by the households. Energy poverty is determined on the basis of Energy Development Index [EDI] and regression analysis is used to establish a statistical relationship between energy poverty and the possible determining factors. The results show high energy poverty for the country and disparity in energy wellbeing between the northern and southern states; the former are poorer in terms of energy access
Uncovering secrets of the Maven Repository: Java Build Aspects: An empirical analysis
The Maven Central Repository hosts over 11 million packages. As Maven itself is a build tool for Java, the majority of these packages are Java archives. This research aims to analyze these packages and look into various build aspects of these projects (the research questions): are Java modules used, what Java versions are used and how is the compiler configured? This is done by downloading a subset of these packages and looking at both the final artifact and the attached Project Object Model (Maven configuration). Specifically, one version is randomly selected from each distinct package hosted on Maven Central and then analyzed. This research helps inform Java language developers and library maintainers. It captures parts of the build system evolution over a span of more than a decade. Precisely, version adoption, reproducibility and desirable build features are all important metrics for project maintainers in any software ecosystem. In the end, 473352 packages were analyzed. Firstly, it was found that Java modules are rare: only 6919 (1.69% of the artifacts with an archive) of the packages use Java modules. Secondly, the most common Java version used is Java SE 8 (182476 packages) representing almost half of all analyzed packages. All long-term support versions (Java SE 8, 11, 17 and 21) make up roughly half of the available packages. Thirdly, only 54.98% of artifacts configure the Maven compiler plugin with the most used parameters being the source and target Java versions. The most common additional compiler flags are verbosity settings, providing more feedback and code analysis from both the linter and compiler.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin
Análise descritiva das duas traduções brasileiras do conto The invisible man de G. K. Chesterton
The present study aims to identify prevailing norms behind the translational strategies of two Brazilian translations (1997 and 2006) of the detective story The Invisible Man by the British author G. K. Chesterton. The type and extent of equivalence will be analyzed by comparing the translations with each other and with the English text by means of occurrences arranged side by side in tables. The hypothesis was explored in three stages: preliminary, macro- and micro-levels. Descriptive Translation Studies serves as the theoretical basis for the study, especially the concept of norms introduced by Gideon Toury (1995). Lambert & Van Gorp.s (1985) descriptive approach was used as methodology for the object of analysis. The results indicated the influence of both translational and publishing norms as well as the type and extent of equivalence in the translations
An Analysıs of the Turkısh Translatıon of Obscene Words in Jeanette Wınterson S Wrıtten on the Body and Sexıng the Cherry in the Lıght of Relevance Theory and Norm Theory
Word choice plays a substantial role in the style of the author because it is specifically chosen by the author among many other linguistic options. In this sense, word choices, are important elements to be considered during the translation process. Literary texts go through the translation process for the target audience s reading experience which may not be similar to the reading-experience of the source-text readers. Based on the assumption of Relevance Theory that people can communicate as long as they share mutual contextual knowledge, this study dwells on the analysis of the Turkish translations of Jeanette Winterson s Written on the Body (Bedende Yazılı, 2013) and Sexing the Cherry (Vişnenin Cinsiyeti, 2000) done by Süheyla Çağlayan Mathews and Pınar Kür, respectively. The study also refers to Gideon Toury s norm theory to dwell on why the obscene words might have been euphemized in Bedende Yazılı.Kelime seçimleri yazarın biçeminde son derece önemli bir rol oynamaktadır, zira yazar bu seçimleri mevcut diğer birçok dilbilimsel seçenek arasından özellikle seçmektedir. Bu bağlamda, kelime seçimleri, çeviri sürecinde dikkate alınması gereken önemli hususlardır. Çeviri söz konusu olduğunda, bu noktaya özellikle dikkat edilmesi gerekir, çünkü edebi metinlerin çevrilmesinin nedeni kaynak metnin okuyucularından daha farklı bir okuma süreci deneyimleyecek bir okur kitlesine hitap etmektedir. Bağıntı Kuramı nın, iki kişinin karşılıklı bağlamsal bilgi paylaşımıyla daha kolay iletişim kurabileceği varsayımından hareketle, bu çalışma Jeanette Winterson un Written on the Body (Bedende Yazılı, 2013) ve Sexing the Cherry (Vişnenin Cinsiyeti, 2000) kitaplarının sırasıyla Süheyla Çağlayan Mathews ve Pınar Kür tarafından yapılmış çevirilerinin analizine odaklanmaktadır.Bu bağlamda, çalışmada Gideon Toury nin norm kuramına başvurulmuştur
