Analysis of transverse flux machines using a virtual mutual inductance approach
In this paper a virtual mutual inductance approach is used to analyse the performance of transverse flux machines (TFMs). The virtual mutual inductance between the stator windings and the magnets' equivalent currents is obtained by integrating the flux produced by the stator windings over the surface of the magnets. Key design parameters such as back EMF, torque, phase inductance and power factor are readily calculated using the proposed methodology. This method is also used to optimise the geometry of a particular machine which provides an insight into the relationship between power factor and torque. Furthermore, the insights gained suggest a design approach that takes into account the power factor of TFMs, which may help unlock their potential through a trade-off between torque density and power factor. The results obtained using the analytical model are verified using 3D finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental data

This editorial summarizes the content of the Special Issue entitled "The International Symposium on Electric Vehicles (ISEV2017)", which was published in MDPI's Energies journal. The Special Issue was compiled in 2017 and accepted a total of 26 papers. Lithium-ion battery, energy management of electric vehicles, and motor control in electric vehicles were the most discussed topics, introducing brand new methods with very sound results.</p
Analytical calculation of the torque produced by transverse flux machines
An analytical technique for the calculation of torque produced by a transverse flux machine is developed in this study. In this technique, the magnets are replaced by their equivalent current sheets and the torque is calculated using the Lorentz force equation. The flux density distribution is calculated using a conformal mapping method that takes into account curvature and slotting. The result is a relatively simple equation that relates torque to the electric and magnetic loadings of the machine and a flux factor that depends on key machine geometrical parameters. Response of upstream migrating juvenile European eel (Anguilla anguilla) to electric fields: application of the marginal gains concept to fish screening
The decline in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) recruitment over the past half-century is partly due to river infrastructure that delays or blocks upstream migration to rearing habitat. Stimuli, such as electricity, can be used to modify the behaviour of downstream moving fish and guide them to preferred routes of passage at river infrastructure; but research on upstream migrating juvenile eel remains limited. The response of upstream migrating juvenile eel exposed to pulsed direct current (PDC) electric fields was investigated using a recirculatory flume. Eel were presented a choice of two routes upstream under either: (1) a treatment condition, in which the selection of one route resulted in exposure to High Electric Field (HEF) strength that was between 1.5–2 times stronger than the Low Electric Field (LEF) strength encountered in the alternative route; or (2) a control in which the electric field was absent in both routes. Under the treatment, five different mean HEF strengths (0.53, 0.77, 1.22, 2.17 and 3.74 Vcm-1) were tested at one of two frequencies (2 and 10 Hz). Route choice, distance downstream of the first set of electrodes at which an initial response was observed and avoidance behaviours (acceleration, retraction, switching and rejection) were compared among treatments. For the 1.22, 2.17 and 3.74 Vcm-1 and under 2 Hz, eel preferred to pass the LEF route. Avoidance was greater in the HEF route and positively related to field strength. The distance of the initial response did not differ between routes, field strengths or frequency. Upstream migrating eel avoided electric fields indicating potential to develop this approach for fish guidance. Further work is needed to test prototypes in field settings, particularly in combination with traditional physical screens to water intakes as part of a process of applying the concept of marginal gains to advance environmental impact mitigation technology
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Experimental investigations into a hybrid energy storage system using directly connected lead-acid and Li-ion batteries
This paper presents experimental investigations into a hybrid energy storage system comprising directly parallel connected lead-acid and lithium batteries. This is achieved by the charge and discharge cycling of five hybrid battery configurations at rates of 0.2–1C, with a 10–50% depth of discharge (DoD) at 24 V and one at 48 V. The resulting data include the overall round-trip efficiency, transient currents, energy transfers between the strings, and the amount of energy discharged by each string across all systems. The general observation is that the round-trip efficiency drops from a maximum of around 94–95% in the first stages of the charge/discharge process, when only the Li-ion strings are active, to around 82–90% when the lead-acid strings reach a DoD of up to 50%. The most important parameters in the round-trip efficiency function are the ratio between the Li-ion and lead-acid energy available and the charge/discharge current. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
