V úvodu zařazuji Toni Morrison do širšího literárního a kulturně-historického kontextu a nastiňuji situaci, v jaké Morrison byla, když psala tyto knihy. Další společný znak obou knih nás přivádí k...Toni Morrison was born in 1931 as Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio. She studied at Howard University and later at Cornell. She worked as an English teacher, but in 1965 she became a senior editor at the Random House. Thanks to her, many African American works were published. As Henry Louis Gates observes, as a writer, Morrison was influenced by the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and by William Faulkner. Morrison published her first novel, The Bluest Eye, in 1970. Sula was published in 1974, followed by Song of Solomon (1977), Tar Baby (1981), and Beloved in 1987. In 1993, Morrison was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, becoming the first African American woman to win the prize.1 Morrison continues to publish until the present day; her most recent works include Paradise, Love, and A Mercy. When putting Morrison's work into a wider context, we have to consider the difficulties of African American self-expression in literature. According to Barbara Christian, in the 1970s and 1980s, the time Morrison published most of her novels, African American women writers undertook an exploration of their history and community. They were finally able to express what the previous generations were not, as they were permitted to express themselves in limited ways, due to racism and sexism. Laughter and madness in post-war American fiction

Two philosophical positions seem evident in post-war American fiction: one realist, one anti-realist. Using the terms 'revelation' and 'apocalypse' to reflect the former, and 'entropy' the latter, this thesis proposes that distinctions between the two can be made by analysis of a text's treatment of the nexus between laughter and madness. After an Overview that identifies and defines key terms, the Introduction considers various theoretical treatments of laughter from which its function can be ascertained as being both to reinforce stability within social groups and to explore new alternatives to existing modes of thought. Madness being defined as an inability to balance the opposing forces of system and anti-system, laughter is therefore vital to maintain sanity. The Fool emerges as a crucial figure in this process. Chapter One explores, with reference to Heller's Catch-22, Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Kerouac's On The Road, the Laughter of Revelation: a laughing relationship between a Protagonist who is trapped within the system of an Institution and a Fool who communicates to the Protagonist (through laughter) a means of escape. Chapter Two then discusses, with reference to Blatty's The Exorcist, King's It, Morrison's Sula, and Nabokov's Lolita, the Laughter of Apocalypse: a laughing relationship in which the Fool's laughter (as mockery) is potentially destructive of both the Protagonist's sanity and the stability of the Institution. Chapter Three explores, with reference to Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-5, Ellis's American Psycho, and Heller's Closing Time, the Laughter of Entropy: the failure of the laughing relationship that obtains when the dialectic between Institution (as system) and Fool (as anti-system) collapses. The concluding remarks reflect the metafictional implications of the foregoing analyses. It is suggested that, with the collapse of this dialectic (expressed by the Laughter of Entropy), the traditional relationship between Author and Reader becomes problematic

The Sula Reef Complex, Norwegian Shelf

    No full text
Cool-water carbonates in the aphotic zone of deep shelf and continental margin settings in the Northeast Atlantic are produced by the deep-water coral reefs withLophelia pertusa as the major framework builder. Through a compilation of side scan sonar, airgun and manned submersible surveys from several cruises to the mid-Norwegian Sula Reef Complex (SRC), the facies pattern and zonation of one of the largest deep-water reefs in the Northeast Atlantic is described in relation to the overall seabed topography. The late glacial to early postglacial iceberg scour on the crest and shoulder of the Sula Ridge provides settling ground for the scleractinian corals already in the early Holocene. Since then coral growth continues until today but was supposed to be disturbed by an environmental hazard, the so-called second Storegga event. The distinct distribution pattern of individualLophelia reefs on the Sula Ridge has stimulated a discussion on intrinsic environmental controls such as the bentho-pelagic coupling and the alternative hydrocarbon-based nutrition hypothesis

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Rock composition and water quality of San Pedro Sula area (Honduras).

A multidisciplinary study was carried out, within the "Estudio Para La Proteccion Ambiental Del Acuifero Del Valle De Sula Y De Las Fuentes De Agua De La Reserva Forestal Del Merendon'' plan, focused on the appraisal and management of the water resources in San Pedro Sula area (Honduras). This paper deals with the hydrochemical study which is of great significance for the comprehension of the hydrogeological system. The aim is to highlight the relationship between the rock composition of the ground water recharge basin and the quality of the alluvial terrain aquifer. The aquifer is contained between alluvial sediments of the San Pedro Sula plain; these sediments, in the areas in contact with the Merendon mountain chain, comprise mainly alluvial fans generated by material transported by the rivers; the apical area of these fans is characterised by high permeability and is the site of a free monostrate aquifer. Moving towards the more distal fan areas, depressed areas of fine sedimentation (silt and clay) appear; the permeability of the sediments is very low and the aquifer divides into a more superficial one and a deeper one; the latter was found to be under slight pressure. Regarding the ground water recharge basin, represented by the Merendon mountain chain, this includes rocks in various degrees of metamorphism, intrusive rocks, anatectic products and hydrothermal products characterised by permeability through fracturing. The rocks of the ground water recharge basin and the scour of the pedogenetic layer have determined the present water quality and the soils and palaeosoils composition of the later alluvial sediment deposition. Bicarbonate-alkaline waters characterised by a specific electric conductivity <100 μS cm-1 are linked to intrusive rocks and anatectic products of the Zapot al river. These waters have a short underground watercourse. Calcium bicarbonate waters with specific electric conductivity >1000 μS cm-1, observed in Aldea El Carmen area, are connected to the dissolution of secondary calcite. This calcite is considered being the product of precipitation from carbonatic schists involved in granitic pluton intrusions. Deep alkaline-bicarbonate waters, warm in some cases, have a pH of 10. Sulphate-chlorinealkaline waters with pH around 4, occurs in the Manchaguala river basin, and are linked to sulphates produced by oxidation of metallic intrusulphurs formed at the margin of the pluton by hydrothermal processes

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
