    Mal-Nutrition

Mal-Nutrition documents how maternal health interventions in Guatemala are complicit in reproducing poverty. Policy makers speak about how a critical window of biological growth around the time of pregnancy—called the ""first 1,000 days of life""—determines health and wealth across the life course. They argue that fetal development is the key to global development. In this thought-provoking and timely book, Emily Yates-Doerr shows that the control of mothering is a paradigmatic technique of American violence that serves to control the reproduction of privilege and power. She illustrates the efforts of Guatemalan scientists, midwives, and mothers to counter the harms of such mal-nutrition. Their powerful stories offer a window into a form of nutrition science and policy that encourages collective nourishment and fosters reproductive cycles in which women, children, and their entire communities can flourish. ""This sensitive, wide-ranging, and beautifully written ethnography teaches us how the language of biological reproduction works to appropriate women’s rich generative and creative capacities for the reproduction of empire."" — CARLOTA McALLISTER, author of The Good Road ""Gripping and intricately layered in its analysis, this groundbreaking work illuminates how interventions purporting to improve women’s health and reproduction so often do more to uphold the very structures underlying gender violence and health inequality."" — MEGAN A. CARNEY, author of The Unending Hunger ""Mal-Nutrition brilliantly reveals a global struggle behind vulnerable women—against sexual violence and the displacement of their communities by agricapital. This is a timely and urgent book."" — RAYNA RAPP, author of Testing Women, Testing the Fetu

Development of novel bimetallic chiral complexes & formation of cyclic aminals under under Friedländer conditions

    No full text
The design of new chiral binuclear ligands was undertaken to address the challenge of catalyzing nucleophilic additions to simple α,β- unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The designs were based on natural bimetallic enzymes as well as on synthetic achiral bimetallic complexes. Ligands with different electronic and structural properties were synthesized and a variety of transition metal complexes prepared. Their catalytic activities were tested in 1,4-additions of indole to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Single X-ray crystallography was used to gain an insight into the nature of these newly developed chiral bimetallic complexes. Efforts were made to synthesize chiral bimetallic complexes derived from amino indanol. A new reaction methodology was investigated to form cyclic aminals from aminobenzaldehydes and secondary amines. The methodology was shown to be successful for broad range of substrates. L-proline could be used in place of secondary amines in a decarboxylative variant of the reaction. The use of microwave irradiation was explored as a means to extend the scope of this methodology.M.S.T.Includes abstractIncludes bibliographical referencesby Rudrajit Ma

This present thesis will explore the concept of evil, in the work of Paul Ricoeur (1923-2005). To do this we evaluate his work as a whole, but focused on three books, as they highlight moments of interpretation, of our author, regarding their approach to the problem of evil. They are: THE SYMBOLISM OF EVIL, EVIL: A CHALLENGE TO PHILOSOPHY AND THEOLOGY, and THE ONESELF AS ANOTHER. But we inverted the chronological order of the texts to make an original approach that excels as a way to get to Paul Ricoeur proposal of a solution to the problem of evil. We have exposed how, as the author interprets the history of philosophy and history of theology, he developed the problem of evil, and from there too we have exposed how our author addresses it, that is, from the perspective of a person who suffers. To then see how the roots of the interpretation and possible solution, for the problem, are founded in myths and symbols of evil, and more, how man is fallible, and fragile in relation to the problem of evil. By then, finally, exploring his small ethics. Where we believe we can finish with the confrontation against evil through just institutions. São eles: THE SYMBOLISM OF EVIL, O MAL: UM DESAFIO À FILOSOFIA E À TEOLOGIA, e O SI-MESMO COMO UM OUTRO.
