What does regional trade in South Asia reveal about future trade integration? Some empirical evidence

    Get PDF
In 1995 the seven South Asian countries-Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka-initiated a multilateral framework for regionwide integration under the South Asian Preferential Trade Agreement (SAPTA). In a recent initiative, members agreed that SAPTA would begin the transformation into a South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) by the beginning of 2006, with full implementation completed between 2009 and 2013. The impetus toward regional preferential trading arrangements and greater regional economic integration raises many important issues, both for the South Asian region as a whole and for the individual countries. The author uses the natural trading partners hypothesis as the empirical criterion to assess the potential success of a South Asian trading bloc. Using various definitions of the natural trading partner hypothesis-based on trade volume, geographic proximity, and the complementarity approaches-the author demonstrates that the South Asian countries can be characterized only moderately as natural trading partners. This characterization is, however, largely a consequence of previous impediments to trade among regional members. The author further demonstrates through additional statistical measures-including revealed comparative advantage indices, trade concentration, and trade competition profiles-that the trade structures that have evolved among the South Asian Countries may not facilitate a rapid increase in intra-regional trade. But there is evidence that previous unilateral trade liberalization efforts in the South Asian countries have already had a positive impact in boosting both intra- and extra-regional trade. Continuing the process of unilateral liberalization, in parallel with regional integration, would aid the South Asian countries to continue to diversify their still narrow export bases and potentially evolve new comparative advantages and complementarities that could facilitate the successful implementation of SAFTA.TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Trade and Regional Integration,Economic Theory&Research,Trade Policy,Environmental Economics&Policies

As one of the Almighty creatures, humans will certainly never be separated from thoughts about their God. Divinity is one of the sacred things which mediates how humans appreciate worship to their Creator. Even though it is well known that God is One with such worship, it turns out that there are several ethnic groups and cultures which collaborate this divine concept with their culture or what is called the Javanese tradition. Of the many Javanese traditions in Indonesia, the Sapta Darma and Sumarah traditions are examples of how a Javanese culture has its own divine concept. Which is still an interesting topic and object to study. There are several similarities between the Sapta Darma an Sumarah traditions. As for what is the similarity between these two schools is regarding the concept of prostration which becomes the intermediary between the adherents and his creator. Not only in terms of the similarities found, the author also found differences between these two schools, including regarding how these two schools interpret divinity between perspectives, with the existence of the Pancasila of God for example, or with other things. Not only that, regarding the nature of God and God’s relationship with humans, in fact, these two schools have unique definitions. Therefore, this paper aims to expand on this material in detail. Specifically, this paper aims to explore a little how the meaning of divinity according to the Javanese tradition in Indonesia. This study employed comparative analysis to compare the divine concept according to the Sapta Darma and Sumarah schools. Life Cycle Assessment and Material Flow Analysis Research on Electronic Waste in Asia: Trends, Gaps, and Insights

    Get PDF
The term "electronic waste" or "e-waste" refers to a broad array of discarded electronic products and electrical appliances that have reached the end of their useful lives. These include computers, smartphones, televisions, and refrigerators. Over the past three years, the volume of e-waste has surged, from 24.9 million metric tons (MMT) in 2019 to 33 MMT in 2022, as reported by the United Nations in The Global E-Waste Monitor 2024. This increase is driven by the expansion of the electronics industry and the increased usage of electronic devices. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Material Flow Analysis (MFA) are key methodologies used to assess the environmental impact and material flow of e-waste management, respectively. However, many MFAs fail to track the flow of secondary materials that are reused, recycled, and reduced in the new products. This study addresses these gaps by analyzing e-waste management trends in Asia using a systematic literature network analysis (SLNA). SLNA combines a systematic literature review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis (BA) to offer a comprehensive review from various perspectives. This study aims to identify underexplored topics and trends, provide insights that can shape future research directions, and inform government policies on e-waste management in Asia

This study undertakes a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis of the proposed glass elevator installation at Kelingking Beach, a renowned tourist destination in Bali. The research draws upon diverse scholarly perspectives to offer a comparative lens on infrastructural developments in natural settings. While the glass elevator promises to democratize access, particularly for older people and those with mobility challenges, and possibly amplify economic gains, it also brings forth concerns related to overdevelopment, environmental impact, and the risk of compromising the intrinsic charm of the destination. Our findings elucidate that while there are clear strengths, such as enhanced accessibility and potential for premium pricing, there are notable challenges to consider. The weaknesses, primarily arising from potential safety concerns and the possibility of detracting from the beach's natural allure, call for thoughtful solutions. Opportunities present themselves through collaborative efforts, sustainable practices, and a reinvigorated tourism sector. The study serves as a template for policymakers and stakeholders in natural tourist destinations, aiming to integrate infrastructure without diluting the essence of the locale

Urban heat island distribution, transformation, and projection (Case study: Jakarta City in 2000, 2020, and 2040)

    Get PDF
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon occurs when urban areas experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural regions due to urbanization, land use changes, and reduced green spaces. In cities like Jakarta, UHI worsens climate change impacts, increases energy consumption, and threatens public health and quality of life. This study analyzes changes in UHI intensity and distribution in Jakarta between 2000 and 2020 and projects its impacts by 2040. The methodology includes analyzing Landsat satellite data to map surface temperature and land use changes, processed using geographic information system (GIS) tools. A 2040 projection is made using an urban climate model simulating temperature trends based on urbanization and land use patterns. Findings suggest that UHI intensity in Jakarta increased significantly from 2000 to 2020, particularly in densely built areas with limited green space. The 2040 projection indicates that without strong mitigation efforts, UHI will continue to rise, negatively affecting public health and increasing energy demand. However, strategies such as expanding green spaces and adopting eco-friendly building technologies can significantly reduce UHI intensity, helping mitigate climate change impacts. This research provides critical guidance for urban planners and policymakers to implement effective UHI mitigation strategies, promoting sustainable urban development and enhancing the resilience of Jakarta’s urban environment against future climate challenges
