A New Reading of Ruth Suckow

    No full text
By 1950, after three decades of writing, Ruth Suckow (1892-1960) was a well-respected writer whose work seemed headed for a permanent position in the canon of American literature. Instead, Suckow\u27s fiction steadily became less known through the following decades. The question of why her work came to be ignored and why such a position is unwarranted is addressed in A New Reading of Ruth Suckow. The conclusion is that a regionalist categorization and a related gender bias in the literary canon have adversely affected Suckow\u27s works. Gender bias is reflected in the critical assumptions which ascribe an inferior position to regionalism and, in turn, place a number of women\u27s works in this category while excluding similar male fiction. Further, a male-dominated literary tradition indicates a related prejudice in discounting the sphere of home and family--found in many women\u27s works--as sites of representation for the human condition. Suckow\u27s works, with a predominant Iowa background and an emphasis upon themes presented through women\u27s lives within the private sphere, therefore, have been critically disregarded for gender-biased reasons. A reconsideration of regionalism and the setting of the private sphere illustrates that significant exploration of character by Suckow is not precluded within the context of a specific environment

In her Memoir Ruth Suckow speaks of the small Iowa town where she was born as a place that looked ahead toward fresh beginnings. She describes other towns where she lived as older and more settled. But all of them, she implies, are dependent upon the sunshine, rains, and rich fields of the great farming region that is known as the Midwest, the Middle West, or Mid-America

    Empirical Perspectives on Anaphora Resolution

    No full text
Traditionally, anaphor resolution focused on structural cues of the antecedent. Recently, the interaction between discourse factors and information structure affecting antecedent salience has been more thoroughly explored. This volume depicts selected peer-reviewed research papers that tackle issues in anaphor resolution from theoretical, empirical and experimental perspectives. These collected articles present a wide spectrum of cross-linguistic data (Dutch, German, Spanish, Turkish, Yurakaré) and also offer new results from L1 and L2 acquisition studies. Data interpretation span from typological to psycholinguistic viewpoints and are related to recent developments in linguistic theory. One data analysis puts the issue of anaphor resolution in a historical context. The experimental findings are complemented by reviews of the current literature on the role of discourse units. This volume gives a comprehensive overview of the state of discussion how the interaction between information structure and contextual discourse affects salience. That's why it will be welcomed by all linguists and psycholinguists who are theoretically and / or experimentally investigating several aspects of anaphor resolution

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

História do ensino industrial no Brasil: uma análise historiográfica da obra de Celso Suckow da Fonseca

    No full text
The present study performed a historiographic analysis of the work História do ensino industrial no Brasil, by the educator-engineer Celso Suckow da Fonseca (1905-1966). We used the historical method as described by Rüsen (2015), seeking to understand the theoretical and methodological assumptions that guides the work. The understandings of intellectual, social place and the writing of history are references for the analysis of the source. Given his work in various roles in the field of Vocational Education in Brazil, Suckow presents evidence of his engaged writing. From the interpretative matrices proposed by Xavier (2011), we point out elements of the political-institutional matrix in the work analyzed, but concomitantly with the sociological and political-ideological matrices. Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
