Residential Land Use, the Urban Heat Island, and Water Use in Phoenix: A Path Analysis
abstract: While previous studies have shown that urban heat islands (UHI) tend to increase residential water use, they have not yet analyzed the feedbacks among vegetation intensity, diurnal temperature variation, water use, and characteristics of the built environment. This study examines these feedback relationships with the help of a path model applied to spatially disaggregated data from Phoenix, Arizona. The empirical evidence from the observations in Phoenix suggests the following: (1) impervious surfaces contribute to increased residential water use by exacerbating UHI; (2) larger lots containing pools and mesic vegetation increase water demand by reducing diurnal temperature difference; and (3) smart design of urban environments needs to go beyond simplistic water body- and vegetation-based solutions for mitigating uncomfortably high temperatures and consider interactions between surface materials, land use, UHI, and water use.Corresponding Author:

Transcriptomic analysis of DNA damage response in zebrafish embryos under simulated microgravity
The dataset for this project was taken from the study titled “RNA sequencing of zebrafish embryos under simulated microgravity conditions (GLDS-373)” submitted to the NASA GeneLab repository by the authors. The accession number of the project is GSE145967. We downloaded the RNA-SEQ raw gene counts data of 12 wild-type AB Zebrafish (Danio rerio) of both sexes, 3–12 months of age and approximately 3–4 cm in body length. They were constantly subjected to a 12/12h light/dark cycle and maintained in a circulating water bath at 28.5°C under standard laboratory conditions. The zebrafish embryos were produced through natural breeding conditions with autoclaved system egg water containing 60μg/mL sea salt in distilled water according to the previously reported protocols

Food is one of the key focal areas of campus sustainability initiatives and this project studied an aquaponics system and trained Georgia Southern University students on sustainable food production at their residences. Aquaponics is a sustainable and alternative form of agriculture, where aquatic fauna and crops are grown together in a mutually beneficial way. This project also produced four different types of crops, a leafy vegetable (Lettuce), a fruit-bearing vegetable (Tomato), a fruit (Strawberry) and an herb (Mint) with crayfish as aquatic species. Using the aquaponics study as demonstration resources, Georgia Southern University students were trained on developing miniature aquaponics systems to grow food at their dorms, apartments or houses
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
