Do Temporary Contracts Affect TFP? Evidence from Spanish Manufacturing Firms
No full textThis paper evaluates the impact of the widespread use of fixed-term contracts in Spain on firms' TFP, via its effect on workers' effort. We propose a simple analytical framework showing that, under plausible conditions, workers' effort depends positively on their perception (for given level of effort) about firms' willingness to convert fixed-term contracts into permanent ones. We test this implication using manufacturing firm level data from 1991 to 2005 by means of nonparametric tests of stochastic dominance and parametric multivariate regression approaches. Our main findings are that high conversion rates increase firm's productivity while high shares of temporary contracts decrease it. Synthesis of Unnatural Alfa-N-linked Glycopeptides with Potential Antifreeze Activity
No full textThe synthesis of neo-glycoconjugates has been gaining much attention in recent years due to the relevance of glycopeptides and glycoproteins in many biological processes.[i] Our group has been actively dedicating its efforts to the synthesis of α-N-linked glycosylamides and glycopeptides.[ii] α-N-linked glycopeptides are unnatural molecules, since they display an α linkage between the peptide side chain and the sugar moiety, unlike natural glycopeptides which connect the peptide to the glycan through a β-N-glycosidic bond. This novel type of glycosylation of peptides could introduce modifications that can mimic and/or interfere with molecular recognition events.[iii] Direct glycosylation of peptide chains is not viable for the synthesis of molecules with α-N-linked configuration, since the corresponding α-glycosyl amines isomerise to the β-anomers. Only very recently Nα-Fmoc-protected glycosyl amino acids have been efficiently and stereoselectively synthesized and linearly incorporated into a peptide sequence.[iii] In the present paper these novel building blocks have been employed for the synthesis of complex structures that resemble antifreeze glycopeptides (Figure 1).[iv] These sequences were prepared using solid phase synthesis with Fmoc protocol, experimenting with different conditions and also using microwave assisted solid phase synthesis, in an effort to enhance the reactivity of our unnatural building block. The α-N-linked glycopeptides were obtained with modest yields, their secondary structure was assessed by circular dichroism and their antifreeze properties were evaluated in the group of Prof. Robert N. Ben. Despite the fact that our compounds do not show significant antifreeze activity, this work constitutes the first attempt towards the synthesis of complex α-N-linked glycopeptides and has been useful to understand the behaviour, sometimes unexpected, of these molecules, in terms of reactivity and stability. Diagnostic performance of histological evaluation has proven to be significantly influenced by sample- and observer-related variabilities. Differentiation between lower levels of fibrosis remains difficult for many, if not all, test modalities, including liver biopsy but, perhaps, such a distinction is not indispensable in light of current therapeutic approaches. Biomarkers and elastography offer, nonetheless, high predictive values for advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis and correlate well with liver-related outcomes. Necroinflammation, steatosis, and hemodynamic changes may significantly interfere with elastography-based techniques, and longitudinal follow-up strategies must be tailored in light of these findings. Knowledge of different test modalities and diagnostic performance indicators can allow for better clinical decision-making and resource allocation. Effect of post-exercise increase in creatine-kinase activity on performance parameters in Standardbred racehorses.
No full textIn equine sports medicine, the most considered performance parameter is the Onset of Blood Lactate Accumulation (OBLA), fixed at 4 mmol/L (Courocè-Malblanc et Hodgson, 2014). Nevertheless, in human medicine several methods to define individual Lactate Threshold (LT) were developed (Faude et al., 2009). Horses with poor performance were reported to have post-exercise creatine-kinase (CK) activity higher than good performer (Fraipont et al., 2011). Aim of the study is to evaluate LTs calculated by different methods in horses with increased post-exercise CK activity.Data from a cohort of Standardbred racehorses that underwent poor performance evaluation, including incremental treadmill test with plasma lactate analysis at different speed steps, were retrospectively collected. A blood sample was collected 6hrs post-exercise and CK activity was evaluated with spectrophotometric method. A case group of 10 horses (3.1±1.0 y.o.) that did not present any other alteration potentially influencing performance than post-exercise CK activity greater than reference value (>735 U/L) was selected (Valli, 2017). An age-matched and sex-matched control group of 10 horses with no alteration potentially influencing performance and normal post-exercise CK activity was selected. Lactate concentrations obtained during treadmill test were analysed with a dedicated sotware (Newell et al., 2009) and LT was determined by the following methods: a)Inflection Point, i.e. the point of intersection between two linear splines, b)Lactate Threshold by logaritmic transformation, c)OBLA and d)Initial Rise of 1 mmol/L post baseline. Values of different LTs from the two groups were compared by means of unpaired t-test.Statistical analysis showed that OBLA was significantly lower (p=0.009) in case group when compared to controls. No differences between the two groups were observed for other LTs values.Results suggest that elevated post-exercise CK activity, consistent with muscular damage, has a negative impact on performance. Moreover, OBLA seems to be an appropriate parameter for performance profiling in racehorses
